Just wanted to say I appreciate your thoughtful critique of that cut of the film. Any chance you'd check out the final cut in theaters to see if your opinion changes? Curious to know how much has changed and whether or not completed music and sfx changes the tone any.

I usually see the finished films after I see the initial test screenings out of curiosity to see what, if anything, changed. This one I am just not sure what could be done to make it better than what I saw because the jokes just don't land. I'll give this one another shot but maybe not opening weekend.

If they want to combat bad buzz, they should be screening the movie instead of holding a month early interview. And how much Dan and Bill enjoyed the movie is damage control. It's two stars of the original speaking for it, but also two stars who have cameos in it.

It doesn't matter how many stars speak for the film. The film needs to speak for itself, which it isn't doing right now. If it was legitimately good, Sony should be screening it to unbiased crowds to get the word out. But right now, the only word to get out comes from people involved.

While I imagine some people are going to like this film, in it's current state I don't think it will garner more than mixed to mediocre reviews. It's not terrible but not particularly good either.
Look forward to a ton of blogs, stories and thinkpieces about sexism, misogyny, why it failed/succeeded. I'm sure the writers of these pieces have them at the ready as everyone has already picked a side, like cheering for their favorite sports team. The film still needs to speak for itself. If it's good, then it doesn't need those involved trying to ardently defend it. If it's good, then the best defense they have is to show it. And if they're not gonna do it now, they should keep quiet until they do.

It is highly irregular for any studio to screen a movie for audiences a month in advance, no matter that the buzz is. It just doesn't happen. That's what test screenings are for. I haven't even heard if there has been a picture/edit lock yet. I would imagine with all of the reaction to the trailers and negative press they are going to edit and tinker with it up until the last possible minute.
If anything there will be audience screenings, like radio promos, the week of release (usually Mondays and Tuesdays) where they will encourage those who liked the movie to post about it on social media by then any potential damage will be minimal. I also think press screenings will be the week before, at minimum, but reviews will be embargoed until the day before release. Sony wants as much damage control as possible. Though if you keep tabs on Twitter the SJW, studio friendly type critics are already lining up to defend it so I could be wrong on the embargo prediction.

It'll be interesting to see what the studio decides to do with critic screenings/embargoes.

On the one hand, if they show it to critics and don't embargo it and critics hate it, they're kind of screwed.

On the other...the media, aside from the clickbait fanboy media, seems to be on the side of this film thus far in large part. Two out of Feig's last three comedies have gotten very good reviews.

I thought the 21 Jump Street movie managed to get early word out around a month before release.

On top of that, 2 out of 3 of Feig's past films, Bridesmaids and Spy, snagged solid early word out of SXSW.

I know they've done a lot of test screenings. Every movie does. But there haven't been any trade "sources" stating what the buzz is coming from them. I know Sony said it tested through the roof recently, but that's all we have to go on.

I just want to hear what the buzz is from trade "sources", not people involved. Because whether we like them or not, it's a better indicator than the studio saying so. I remember Warner Bros. once said that their Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore reunion Blended was one of the best testing comedies they've seen and look how that turned out. Not that I was looking forward to that one to begin with, but it felt like BS. So forgive my ambivalence on taking the word of people involved.

Those are called premieres. Marvel releases their films over in Europe weeks before it gets released in the North America. There's only an issue with a film when the embargo for reviews lifts the day it's released. That's never a good sign but this quiet period isn't bad.

Which means the sooner they conduct the press screenings, the more likely they are to have faith in it.

Man...Movie Bob hit that one out of the park. I actually like what I've seen, particularly the newest trailers, but everything else was articulated better than I could and with a little more profanity.
