The New Ghostbusters - Part 8

Kate McKinnon's role as the "technological explainer" in this movie might get her noticed by a lot of casting directors for more science-fiction/superhero movies in the future, not necessarily comedy ones either.

With respect to this opinion, I'm more annoyed she's literally this movie's Winston. She's the 4th Ghostbuster, who admittedly seems like she might show up earlier than he does, but she's s the streetwise
African-American character who isn't a scientist but can pull her own weight. If it'd been switched out with another actress in this role, it might've been ok, but in this case, it feels like completely lazy writing.

It's not just Jones though. They did it with the whole team. You can clearly tell:

Kristen Wiig - Venkman (leader, brunette)
Melissa McCarthy - Ray (partner, heavy set)
Kate McKinnon - Egon (smart one, socially awkward)
Leslie Jones - Winston (outsider, not a scientist, black)

Chris Nolan's vest just got a little static-y.

It isn't based on gut feeling. It's kinda obvious.

When people aren't interested in something/there's nothing more complicated going on emotionally, they don't talk about it continuously for months.

Me: Hey, you like that girl?
You: No.

That's it. That's how guys work.

I'm not saying these guys hate women, but in the case of Ghostbusters it's bringing up an ugly side of their emotions towards women.

No, it is based on gut feeling. You're assuming it got to do with women when it could merely be due to something else, like it looking awful. I'm sorry, but you don't know what's going on in someone's head unless they explicitly say something to confirm your suspicions.

McKinnon is definitely Egon like, but also very Venkman like. She is much more hip and in touch than Egon. Wiig is NOTHING like Venkman. McCarthy is very different that Ray Stanz as well.

Ehhhh. Agree to disagree.

From some of the stuff I've seen, I kind of like the Wiig/McCarthy dynamic and set up of the movie more than the original. But, still need to see the movie, which I am kind of getting excited for.

Also, just tried one of the Slimer Twinkies. Oddly, I kind of liked it.

Wigg is barely present...

I get a sense that Wigg isn't really enthusiastic about being in the movie. Yeah... she is just kind of... there.

I'm thinking that this movie may get lukewarm reviews from the critics and the movie will be seen as just a forgettable but fun romp but it's looking like this movie will under perform in North America.

As far as I see it, this film really should have been a continuation of the previous Ghostbusters films and not a remake. Even without Harold Ramis and possibly Bill Murray, a continuation still would have been a smarter way to go. And I also think to show diversity, having a mixture of males and females would have been best. But this is Paul Feig's "thing" in a sense.

This film reminds me of the Halloween remake. Rob Zombie does specific things in his films, such as setting a certain unsettling tone and images of shock. Like Paul Feig with Ghostbusters, I think Zombie's heart was in the right place when he tackled Halloween. Zombie said he was a big fan of the original film and he said he felt he could properly remake it. Well, that film has a divided audience now. Some people like it, others downright hate it. I think the same could end up being said for Paul Feig's Ghostbusters remake. Feig is clearly a fan of the original and his heart is in the right place but the certain things he likes to bring to his work may not mash well with a film property like Ghostbusters. I don't think Zombie was the right person to make a Halloween film and I'm feeling that Feig wasn't the right person to make a Ghostbusters film.

Wouldn't that mean the bad reaction would have started once they saw the footage and not when Feig announced a reboot or all women?

Right. Cause people always say exactly what they mean.
Never say anything out of frustration or anger of not getting what they've dreamed of. And don't sometimes harbor internal thoughts/emotions that even they aren't aware of.

People aren't full of contradictions? What's that saying about actions speaking louder than words? Maybe Feig was just making up all those threats and harassment stuff.

If only they'd released Walk The Moon's version of the Ghostbusters song as the main theme instead of FOB's, the hate towards the movie from the trailers would have been lessened considerably.

The supposed "fan" embargo was supposed to be lifted today, yet I can't find anything.

That guy was wrong. He just said the embargo that was supposed to be lifted today was for interviews and features.

Looks like Eric Snider may be right about the embargo.

The embargo doesn't lift until July 10th.

I want this to bomb so bad but I doubt the internet hate will be enough

It will be interesting if this is one of the few flicks that actually does exceedingly well this summer.

Dan Aykroyd being the main representation of the original Ghostbusters and writing the abandoned sequel is what had me worried about doing the sequel. I mean I seriously doubt even if this reboot isn't good that it will be significantly worse than Dan's first attempt to revive an old franchise of his in Blues Brothers 2000.

Ehhhh. Agree to disagree.
I've seen the test screening cut of the movie. I'm giving you my input as someone that has seen the film. After the 15th if you still disagree then you will be doing so with all the info.

You know... I don't want this movie to be a flop, just because of all the people involved. I never want a project to fail.

Having said that, I do want this to be like a wake up call to studios to stop messing with beloved old properties.

The issue is turning a beloved old property into a propaganda statement.

You can't win with those kind of people, bro.
Those people have long made up their mind that they'll hate the movie no mater what.

Propaganda? Really? Even as much as I've been against this, propaganda is going a bit far. Yes Amy Pascal went behind everyone and got the ball rolling in terms of a reboot. However, it's Paul Feig, aka, pretty much only does female-driven comedies. As much as I hate that he didn't do an actual GB3, the man knows what he's best at, and held out until he got the control to what he wanted.

Yes, there's a lot of fighting about whether the hate is sexism, which the other side of that needs to realize people can not like things because it doesn't look good. However, calling this movie a propaganda statement? Yeah, it's pretty far from that.

From trailers and clips alone, Wiig looks like the anti-Venkman to me. She seems far more scientific, has no people skills, and can't control herself around an attractive man. As lovable as a character as he is, Venkman is a creep. He is very outgoing, doesn't have much of a filter, can be a pretty big womanizer, and at first pretty well throws professionalism out the window and constantly hits on Dana during her investigation. Not to mention the questions people tend to bring up on why he had the drugs he did on hand to sedate Zuul when he was supposed to be going on a date with Dana that night.

Which, as from my previous point, despite similarities, it feels like much more of a slap in the face Jones character is a louder version of Winston instead of having more changes to set her apart. I haven't seen the film yet though, so I could be missing something.
