The New Ghostbusters - Part 9

OK...

I think you're still bringing up points that don't have to do with the initial point I made and I think that some of your points don't make sense. But it's whatever

It seems like we're having two separate convos. I'm talking about how is this much different than the other female led films this year or ever and you're mostly talking about why men are angry

I think it's way more impressive and "progressive" that Bridesmaids and the Heat were able to bring in over $150 mill each when they were both original properties. Bridesmaids didn't even have any big box office draws. So the fact that GB has "heat" behind it, again, doesn't mean anything to what I was trying to say

I am getting things mixed up and having two different discussions based on what you were saying how you don't think this helps feminism. But here, you're wondering what makes it different from something progressive like Heat or Bridesmaids? I honestly think this Ghostbusters was trying to do the same thing as those other two given Feig's history, and then the internet happened.

I guess I should say I don't see how this is helping feminism much when there are other movies doing the same thing this is doing.
Yes this is a female driven reboot but
Bridesmaids, The Heat, Ghostbusters. All female driven movies. All had marketing focusing on the women. So why is GB16 getting more praise for being "feminist" when Melissa McCarthy has been putting out female driven movies for a minute now?

So is this getting the praise from people for being feminist just because it's a reboot and they changed the sexes?
Neighbors 2 got some praise for having a feminist message and for making a "frat comedy" just with women but I'm sure not everyone who is giving praise to GB gave the same pats to Neighbors 2 or are giving the same to Bad Moms pre-release

And that's what I'm trying to gather. I don't think this is doing anymore for feminism when other movies are doing largely the same thing by making a predominantly white, straight female driven movie. It's a sideways movement imo (which isn't bad) rather than an upwards trending one. And that's why I don't think this is doing much for feminism or women in Hollywood other than being made which is good

Basically. If you don't want to see it, don't see it. If you do want to see it, see it. It's all good. Either way, use your time the way you feel you'd be using it best.

Got my ticket for tonight.

I might check it out when it hits DVD.i feel enough time has gone by for a reboot and from what i hear it does pay revernce to original film and they did get surviving original cast for cameos.

I never saw robocop reboot because nothing as one who loved original film
appealed to me.

seeing how audences reacted to trailer i felt it will be hit.and i have heard some say it's better than trailer would have you think it is.

I see what you mean. I guess because this is more of a well known brand taken over after men were in it. It's also proving that women can hold their own franchise, whether brand or not.

I hate saying this, but it's baby steps for progress. It's a victory for all women being in a big movie, but I do agree, they can do better and there was potential that was squandered.

I think the fundamental problem with this movie is that it's a remake of the original. Hence the suspicious similar racial make up and types. And why this movie was never going to even be great. You just can't recapture the original film. If they did their own thing, this would have been ALOT better for feminism and possibly could have been just as good as the original film. Apart of this movie does feel studio driven in the sense that it's a remake.

I don't see why they couldn't have changed races if this is a remake or a reboot. They could've changed races and such. If they could've changed sexes I don't see why they could change races if they really wanted to.

But it's all moot

Who cares about feminism? Its just a film anyway.

I was excited when they cast these ladies, but the excitement evaporated when I saw the first footage. Nevermind the marketing, for me it was the lack of cinematography, crap jokes and the bland ghost design that really turned me off. And more importantly the Tone. Judging from the reviews, this takes place in a wacky reality where everyones goofy including the secondary characters. The original had serious secondary characters which made the Ghostbusters pop and create those golden awkward moments. All the reviews have said its basically a goofy Paul Feig universe. I love his movies but I don't want that tone for Ghostbusters.
Think of it this way...
Ghostbusters is to horror movies what Beverly Hills Cop is to Lethal Weapon. Comedic characters doing funny stuff in mostly SERIOUS genre movies, with every other character being mostly SERIOUS. Thats a classic tone captured excellently in most of those 80s movies.
I won't watching it this weekend.

Plenty of seats left near me. They'll probably do better tomorrow with walk ins.

Just came out of the movie. Hated the hell out of it. Will elaborate later.

Because of the reaction towards it. It became a "cause" for some when it was attacked viciously using misogynistic language.

Basically the haters helped it gain its momentum. And now they're kicking themselves.

I am very interested in what the Cinemascore will be for this film.

Well... I'll be an adult and admit that I was wrong. It wasn't a terrible movie. It wasn't fantastic, but I'd give it a 6 out of 10. It was alright, and the CGI was cool. The attention and hype for this made it a bigger deal than it was, and about 20 minutes into the film I thought, "THIS is what everyone's freaking out about?" We're on the brink of World War III, people. Let's be concerned about that, not a harmless comedy movie. It's harmless. It'll make its money and there will either be a sequel or there won't. Your life will go on. Nobody's erasing the original from existence; you're still allowed to watch it. I will say though... this had the worst trailers and marketing I've ever seen for a film. The jokes from the trailers were better in the context of the story and had a better flow.

Just got back. Childhood is still intact. Watching the original movie on AMC right now and my TV didn’t shut down in protest. My Ghostbusters Lego Dimensions game figures didn’t pack up and leave while I was at the movies. So I think we’re all good.

I really enjoyed it. Villain was so-so, and it probably copied too many beats from the original movie....but I thought the ladies were hilarious, and the movie was lots of fun.

If you already pre-hate it, you’ll probably still hate it. But I’d definitely recommend it to anyone on the fence about it.

Did you enjoy the cameos or is it true what a lot are saying about them falling flat and feeling very forced/lingering too long. Or pointless.

Where on the brink of World War III?

Where on the brink of World War III?

Yes! Darn it Obama and Hilary! Darn it all to hell! :sly:

We're away from two minutes to midnight now. We were the closest during Bush and now we're certainly far away from the jester's court. Unless Lex Luthor becomes President.

They were just kind of there. Didn’t hate them, didn’t love them. Didn’t detract from the movie at all, really.

Do cameos ever really have a point?

Some can be very enjoyable and fun. And some can be just pointless and annoying. And I've heard quite a few things about the cameos in this film and how they're just pointless, annoying and bleh.

I know what all 4 cameos are and just curious more specifically your thoughts on that Bill and Dan cameos.

Bill’s seemed like it was going to be more than a cameo, and then he just disappeared. It was funny to see him, but it didn’t really go anywhere either.

Dan’s was more of a regular cameo. It was pretty funny for what it was.

I think Sigourney Weaver got the most applause at our show.
