The New Ghostbusters - Part 9

Well, this has been a boring two days. Lots of average reviews, which don't heavily lean towards the negative or positive side, with a few exceptions here and there. So, how long until this Movie will be forgotten, and the whole controversy surrounding it will be swept under the rug?

General reaction is the definition of mixed. Some loved, some liked with reservations, some hated.

As a friend of mine (who saw it, and liked it himself) said, it's good to see a film that brings out trolls from both sides of the aisle and as he also stated, had their reviews written months ago.

Seems like. Although, interestingly, the backlash seems to be working in the movie's favor. I am reading these reviews and a lot of them almost feel as if the reviewer is looking for something to praise, almost desperately. As if they are conceding it is a bad movie, but don't want to call it one so they are finding hollow praise and calling it average. I think there might be something to be said for the theories that critics are afraid of being labeled misogynistic so they are giving it half-hearted average reviews.

I think it goes both directions, some reviewers praise the film because they're afraid of misogyny accusations, some pan the film because they've been against it from day 1.

The reviews are also curious because once the movie bombs (and with the way it is tracking, it probably will), I expect a lot of backlash from its makers and more adamant public supporters, basically calling audiences misogynistic.

Again, the backlash goes both directions, "supporters" call haters misogynistic, haters accuse critics of being paid by Sony, being SJWs, giving fake positive reviews , etc.

I never said that 6.6 means the movie is terrible or that 6.6 is a terrible score.

I think 6.6 means it's passable. It's fine but nothing to write home about.

I think a Tomatometer of 76% and Average Rating of 6.6/10 is quite average on RT. Several new films have near identical score: Secret lives of Pets (75% and 6.3), Cafe Society (75% and 6.1), BFG (72% and 6.6), Central Intelligence (6.8 and 5.7, ok this one is nowhere near identical). Generally I find Tomatometer quite "decisive" (either really high or really low) while Average Rating is "average"; if Tomatometer is really high then Average Rating is usually lower and vice versus. Like Dory has 95% but only 7.7 AR while Now you see me 2 has 32% and 4.9.

This film is divided from Day 1 by 2 sides: haters said it would be the worst film since Fant4stic while supporters said it would be a good movie. When this turns out to be no different than other summer popcorn flicks, I certainly think that the haters now look more ridiculous.

With RT at Fresh: 35 - Rotten: 11 its pretty clear the film probably doesn't suck even if it doesn't appeal to everyone

I am probably not seeing the movie and i dunno how well it will do at the box office but i'd be surprised if alot of the damage hasn't been done already.

A far worse problem then the movie, is the fact that people give sites like Rotten Tomatoe so much credibility.

The Sexist stuff was always stupid in itself and childish because how many franchises have banked on strong female leads? many horrors, slashers and the alien franchise comes to mind and yet if no guys were supporting those films or even went to see those movies they probably wouldn't still be going today in some form or another

Ghostbusters is different, its got a stronger nostalgia value aswell as the main 4 original guys never being out of the public eye in some form or another since 1984 like in cartoons, video games, comics ect ect so when they say oh you only hate us because we are women... well they need to realise the ghostbusters franchise reaches beyond them being women

It just means that there will be alot of people who actually like the movie which is probably more then what certain people on here expected, as if it was gonna be the next Fan4stic

Well at this point all I'm hoping for is that this film barely makes any money.

Such a curious attitude. The success or failure of this film has such a little impact on your life and your real happiness. Yet I wager this view is shared by a nice slice of the "internet public" out there and... Yeah I don't quite get it. Then again... I'm gonna be 40 by the end of the summer.

I wouldn't care if it flopped as from what i seen their use of nostalgia to sell the movie is just insulting to my childhood and their attitude towards sexism and damage control makes me think they kinda deserve a flop really.

This whole ghostbusters movie has felt like just one big gimmick.

If it does succeed, hopefully they replace Feig. Not because I think he's a horrible Director, but simply because he is not a good fit. From everything I've read, he really would have been better off just doing a Ghostbusters Parody. Subversive Parodies are where he shines. He could have really cut loose, made it R rated like his other Movies, and wouldn't have had to shoehorn in cameos and references the original Movie.

Or how about you dont remake the freaking ghostbusters. Ivan reitman and co are just another level of filmmaking then paul feig and it shows. Like I said a couple pages back you can't recreate the magic of the first and if you cant dont waste my time.

If I had to choose one reason I wouldn't want it to succeed, it's because of all the background shenanigans revealed in the Sony e-mail leaks. Going behind Reitman and pretty much wrestling the rights away from him, basically strong arming the original cast to make appearances or otherwise they'll get sued. It was just one big nasty affair leading to the making of this Movie.

This. So much this. Add to that that the whole "all female cast" thing wasn't a consequence of looking for the best people turning out to be women, but a premise to make a female gb and looking for whoever could fill the roles. That's not how I want to see films being made, and I don't want it to become a success story

So I'm guessing you want more remakes of films that don't need to be remade because If this film succeeds then will see plenty of them.

Woke up and the scores are even higher. So at the least it seems like this is a critical success by RT percentage standards. Unless theres like a large influx of negative reviews that come out. Might even be certified fresh.

And they really need to fire the marketing team that was behind this. Or at the least give them some lessons.

Just for my clarification, he said trolls from both sides had their reviews written months ago?

Will remakes make the original films disappear from existence? You can always enjoy the originals anytime you want and ignore any updated version. Simple.

if this will get good reviews and underperform or bomb then the haters(not the people who are against the reboot) will jump out and have a good time.

this movie looks very different compared to the original. so at least they did what others rebooting old movies couldnt do. make it different.

Honestly, I don't get the Internet. Why so nervous about everything?

I am deeply in love with the original Ghostbusters movie. Deeply. I have a deep, deep affection for that piece of filmmaking, going back to my childhood. I mean, Jesus, as a kid I even wished I had Peter Venkman's receiding hairline - he was THAT cool to me (nowadays I wish I hadn't, but that's another story), and Ghostbusters mattered that much to me. There was a time when I would watch the VHS every. Single. Day.

During the times when a new Ghostbusters sequel was rumored, I was curious about what they would do, but I would also have been fine if it never materialised. I mean, you can always go back to the original classic, and the inferior (yet entertaining) sequel.

When the Paul Feig version was announced, I didn't think much of it.

I watched Spy last year, and didn't think much of Feig (despite loving Freaks & Geeks). It was fun in parts (mostly thanks to Jason Statham), but it was kinda 'meh.' So it didn't really give me a confidence boost in what he could cook up with the Ghostbusters remake.

I saw the first trailer and didn't think much of it.

I saw the second trailer and didn't think much of it.

I don't think much of it, so I simply won't watch it in theaters. I won't litter the movie's official social network pages with hate messages, and don't have the intention of fighting different minded people on message boards, comments sections, and so forth.

I don't care about, so I simply won't watch it. I'm sure I'll catch up on it some time later, and I might even like it... who knows? But right now I'm simply not interested in it.

Nobody raped your childhood. It's just these guys' take on the material. They're not pointing a gun at anyone. So if you don't like how it looks...

Just don't watch it.

Sony Pictures has done a wonderful job at remastering the original movies. They look amazing on the most recent Blu-ray releases, so rewatching them at home is better than ever!

The humour does seem different in this new movie compared to the original and there is less of a remake vibe and more alternative universe reboot with a hint of hey look we are just as good as the originals and we have slimer, staypuft and everything you love from the original movie!... no sorry but that likely is like one of the things that rubbed people the wrong way

I don't like the stuff I saw in the trailers, either.

Expressing an opinion is fine. But I see too many people just going mad all over the Internet over this freakin' remake/reboot/whatever, as if the studio stole their money to finance it.

You don't like it? Don't support it. It's as simple as that.

But the constants attacks against the cast and crew, and the endless fights over this movie all over the web...

I don't get it.

It's a funny thing. I'm 59 years old. I have watched a couple thousand movies in my time. I've seen lots of remakes, sequels, prequels, sidewayquels, whateverquels.....some are good, some bad.....but the main thing I've noticed....the originals are still around. I have seen a movie and loved it....and a sequel is made that I absolutely detest, and it may even make more money and be a bigger success than the original....but life goes on, the sun still shines in the sky, I still watch the original, no one sneaks into my house and takes my original from me.

Amen.

I love The Hangover, but didn't like the sequels.

I love The Matrix, but didn't like the sequels.

Who cares? Why should I spend my time getting angry about the sequels? I just go back to The Hangover and The Matrix.

Same with Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street and its remake, Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop and Total Recall, and many more!

P.S.: *****ing over a remake/reboot/sequel on the Internet won't change anything. The only part YOU can do in not supporting a movie you don't care about is... not watching it.

Arguably the best film ever made was a remake. The Wizard of Oz.

That's what I always tell someone who whines about remakes.
