The franchise has made $915 million world wide. So more people like them then dont.
Isn't that WW and for like 5 movies? TFA took more then that domestically. Which basically means most people don't know about the Resident Evil flicks.

Is that what you think this is about, just having female roles? Not the type of roles, not their prominence in the film? Is that what you think this is a discussion about?

You never specified your original claim so Im just playing along. Which genre you want to get into as far as roles. Last I checked the top 3 movies of all time in the US had strong memorable female leads so what is your reaponse to that?

The force awakens - Daisy ridley
Avatar - Zoe Saldana
Titanic - Kate Winslot

But women are being held back right?

Did you the read the article or did you just ignore it?

Secondly, that females do so well is exactly why the fact that there are still far fewer women in prominent roles is ridiculous. If it is all about that paper, why aren't they at least even?

Well, sounds like it turned out about as I expected. A pretty average movie that is mostly noteworthy for the reaction. I haven't liked Feig's comedies outside of Spy, so I'll probably still wait for rental though.

I take issue with you calling a character in Avatar 'memorable.' :o

I think its the remake word that ticks people off

Remake and the most powerful thing of all... Nostalgia.

Some remakes work for a modern take but remakes of movies that have already aged well will always be judged the most.

Also the problem comes down to this - we need more women in Hollywood behind the scenes. Talking as a man in Hollywood I am not comfortable with writing female protagonists because I don't know the first thing about what women face. Thus, I stay away because it's not what I know. It would just feel fake and inauthentic, thus I stay away. Guessing many guys feel the same. We need more women behind the scenes. So it goes beyond just characters, that's a symptom. The real problem is the lack of representation women have in the Hollywood industry as a whole.

Not really. The franchise average budget was 50 million. This isn't some 250 million star wars type movies.
The budget is irrelevant to how many people have seen it, which is the point. Far more people are aware of Star Wars, far more people have seen it. Thus it is closer to the majority of the world knowing it and having an opinion on it compared to the entire Resident Evil franchise.

I dont care about your article, you brought up female roles and im telling you we just had an unknown female lead a movie to over a billion dollars and become a household name. Not to mention fans demanded more toys of rey.

She is better then Root. Yeah, I said it. :cmad:

the fact it managed to have 5 movies and be on its 6th means people are seeing these movies and i doubt they are all women.

Oh, so you don't care about things like facts and statistics. You are just going to go off your feelings. That explains a lot. :funny:

God, do you even realize that people had to request more Rey figures is the exact problem we are talking about? Hollywood execs don't think female characters sell in such roles, which is exactly why we get so few and even when we do, they short the merch. Big Hero 6 is the Big Hero 4 for little boys, because they keep the girls off the merch.

No one ever said only women see these movies. Who the heck said that? :funny:

And they have low budgets and appeal to their audiences, no doubt. The point is it isn't exactly a worldwide phenomenon.

There was similar discussion of this when the new Iron Man/Girl came out.

Kathy Kennedy was seeing female directors for a potential Star Wars film down the line, and that was considered pandering. I honestly don't know what is "okay" when it comes to this.

I love how thread flew into a rage when I posted that it was important to some of us to see more representation on screen. :funny:

In all fairness, there are an awful lot of men that have a moral obligation to explain things to you. You get enough representation in film, and you should be happy with the handful of examples you get. Think of the men! Think of their struggle to keep women from thinking they can be smart, funny, and bust ghosts!

You want statistics? Go look at the films I listed. For the suppose star wars fan here Im quite shocked.

Also here is a stat my top 3 films all had unknown females at the time and became household names who can sell movies.

Truth is any kind of attempt in changing attitudes about these things is always going to be seen as pandering. There is some weird illusion that everything is an even playing field, and that problems don't exist and shouldn't be addressed.

If improving the representation female directors have is considered pandering that's offensive and sexist as hell. The ratio is 2:10 writers/directors in Hollywood are female. And that might be an under estimate. It's really uneven.

THIS, I disagree with and I think it falls into the other end of the spectrum (and plays into the negativity surrounding this movie).

Imagine if Paul Feig announced a remake that starred:

Andy Samberg
Josh Gad
Keenan Thompson
and
Fred Armisen

The reaction would be just as negative.

Then imagine a trailer is released in which the sole sources of humor seem to stem from Gad being fat and Keenan acting like a loud, obnoxious, black stereotype.

The reaction would be every bit as negative.

Then imagine the director goes out of his way to troll anyone who says anything bad about the movie.

It would all lead to the same exact situation.

I agree with Jake in part, the marketing department is more to blame than anyone.

In fact, a big part of the reaction to this movie stems from having cast members whose humor is overly-broad, terrible marketing , and a director who comes off as very insecure and cannot resist the urge to use Twitter to taunt those who criticize him.

How positive are you on that? Because if it was a male lead movie, I am pretty certain that it wouldn't have picked up the Gamergate and Sad/Rabid Puppies crowd.

There are legitimate reasons to not like or not see that movie. But as bad as the trailers have been, if you think it became the most disliked trailer in history without that regressive crowd, than you are a bit delusional.

I mean, you can even look at the various history of this thread and find sexist comments. And even some unintentional ones, made out of good intentions, but ignorant.
