The New Ghostbusters - Part 9

Has anyone seen this yet?

I was listening to the radio and the guy who watched it gave it a 7/10 but said there was enough "men are stupid" references/comments that it was noticeable.

If I ever watch it, I'll probably keep it to myself. Because let's be honest, unless I say I was wrong and that I enjoyed the Movie, no one will give a **** what I thought about it. I basically get to choose between two responses. Either "I told you so" should I like it, or "Well, you decided to hate it from the start." if I didn't.

I think it's the [BLACKOUT]Zuul in the recording[/BLACKOUT] that we have known for a while. I don't know why it's controversial, other than not wanting a sequel and not wanting [BLACKOUT]this to be related any more to the original GB[/BLACKOUT] :hehe:

Yeah, I don't get why that is controversial either. I mean, if the franchise is successfully rebooted it makes sense to use [blackout]Zuul and Gozer[/blackout] at some point. I mean, wouldn't not doing so be like rebooting Batman and never using Joker?

Yeah...that's probably better than having the integrity to admit you were wrong, or the courage to defend your opinion if you were right. Luckily you painted yourself into a corner and didn't fall for that "have an open mind and see the movie before taking such a strong stance" malarkey. You do you!

The film has it's problems but is a lot of fun. The leads are great and I'm excited to see where the franchise goes from here.

Successfully revitalised the franchise AND does all it can to ensure you have a good time at the flicks. Hollywood needs to seriously embrace shorter run times though as many summer blockbusters are beginning to meander and fizzle out by the end credits.

Okay, I agree with this in part. Maybe taking a strong stance such as "I CAN NEVER LIKE THIS MOVIE EVER NO MATTER WHAT!" is wrong (but I'm not sure Nathan has done that, he may have, I dunno, I haven't seen many of his posts on this topic). But I don't see anything wrong with taking a stance on a movie prior to seeing it and saying, "nope, based on the trailers, pictures, promotional materials, reviews, the director's style/past movies, the actors' style/past movies, etc, this just isn't for me." That is my take on this movie. I'm not going to spend money on a movie that probably won't click with me in the name of having "an open mind." I might Redbox it as that is a cheap alternative. I might not. Time is also a commodity. I won't waste 2 hours if I have something better to do in the name of having "an open mind." If I am just sitting around channel surfing and catch it on cable in a few years and I like it, great. If not, no harm, no foul. But having an open mind is not subjecting yourself to something you probably won't like just for the sake of doing so. One big part of having an open mind is knowing yourself and knowing your own likes and dislikes.

almost 15 pages talking only about reviews. interesting :)

Have you seen the thread dedicated entirely to Rottentomatoes in the specific comic book movie forums? This is nothing.

I still don't know if the Franchise will continue yes its getting some good reviews but we won't know anything until the weekend hits. I just don't see this getting over 60 million Opening weekend at best a Lot of movies I've went to that had the Ghostbusters trailer just didn't get any comments about it at all I think those Trailers really turned some people off then again I could be wrong.

It wasn't tracking good prior to reviews. That's why I said SONY can't be happy with the marketing team. It was something like 30-40 last I checked /heard. A film like this being a "sleeper" isn't what they wanted and there's doubts that it could do that with Trek coming out the following week with positive word behind it due to great trailers and a song that seems to be catching on.

Or it could be either "I told you so" or "You only pretend to like it because you're SJW", like many critics giving positive reviews have been accused of.

Btw per IMBD
3.7/10

Classic IMBD.

About box office I guess it will perform similar to Ant Man (50M+ OW and 3X multi making 160M total domestic). The Heat has a bit lower RT score and 4X+ multi but this will definitely more frontloaded. It can potentially be Chris Hemsworth's highest grossing non-Thor movie.

2 days from opening, IMAX Argentina has only sold 13 tickets for opening day, all showings combined (the last showing of the day is the one with most sales, 6). I havent seen it so empty since that Jack Ryan movie with Chris Pine.

True.

Trackign is saying the main people interested are women over 25 and that it might open at 40-50 mill. But tracking can be wrong...

Hasn't that always been Feig's strength/problem. His audience isn't tracked well so it could go either way. If a girl wants to see it, she will get her friends to go or a boyfriend. Guys go to the theater alone.

Plus how well will this play with families?

As if you needed more reason to distrust IMDB's ratings quality.

They're showing commercials on cartoon network and Nick so, yeah. They're expecting kids to see it.

The challenge and question is can SONY do major damage control from the marketing with their reviews before Trek and Bourne arrive in theaters the following two weeks? If they can that would be impressive. If it's good, I'd want it to do good because they know where they want to go with the Ghostbusters franchise. The question though is, how much damage control can they do thanks to their excellent marketing team?

It was 40-50 million back when the marketing had just begun to ramp up. Marketing plus favorable reviews will boost that amount. I actually think this will get decent word of mouth based on fan's reactions.

Yeah 40-50, got numbers mixed up. That's right. I'd personally fire the marketing team on it, bring another one in last minute and attempt to pull off some major damage control utilIing the reviews to do it with. For a blockbuster that needs 180 to break even, with Trek and Bourne the following weeks, SONY needs to pull off a fast one. If it's good, I'm rooting for them. Just no idea how they can pull this off this late into the game. It would be an enticing move to watch though if they do.

it's at a 60% on metacritic

That is a pretty big discrepancy. Metacritic accounts for what the critic is actually saying rather than simply their selection of "fresh" or "rotten" right? And if I'm not mistaken, aren't they a bit more selective in terms of who can be a critic (limiting Blogosphere critics, for example)?

Last I checked RT critics were giving it on average 6.5/10 so it's the same... I think...

Yeah, it's the tomatometer that's confusing because a 6 review in RT could be fresh. The critic chooses if it is fresh or rotten indepently from the score, while metacritic takes that score and calculates if it is positive, mixed or negative. That's why some people prefer metacritic, I don't really care 'cause I read what the critics say instead of scores, and I don't think the tomatometer presents a huge deviation neither (at the end of the day, it shows if the critics recommend the movie or not, which I think if pretty valid)

It was 6.6 yesterday, so it's down a tenth of a point.

Nah it's back to 6.6 now, maybe a Fresh review just came up.

It's currently 77% with 61 Fresh and 18 Rotten (total 79 reviews). One more review, no matter Fresh or Rotten, to reach number 80 and it can be (gasp!) Certified Fresh.
