The New Ghostbusters - Part 9

Just got back, I really liked it! I didn't see anything wrong with it other than a few technical problems, CG overkill (but what isn't nowadays?) and some missed jokes.

Had a few actual belly laughs which I was NOT expecting. I don't find the original Ghostbusters to be that funny, just more tongue in cheek kinda thing.

LOVED Kristin Wiig. She really held down the film I think. She's the heart of it. McKinnon was just a loose cannon and didn't really have anything to her sadly. Great comedic performance though.

Actually dug all the cameos... and one really surprised me at the very end, I couldn't help but cheer!

If I had to give it a number, probably about a 7. I am definitely buying it on Blu, and maybe even a special edition! Can't wait for a second based on what happened in this one. As long as it's as good, or better than this *crosses fingers*

Just got back from it didn't really end up hating it at all I mean I understand why people might hate this movie but this movie was just was a comedy popcorn movie. The ladies were funny I wasn't as annoyed as I thought I was going to be with Leslie jones characters as I thought I would be. The trailers just did a very bad job with trying to market this movie but if ur going to go into this hating this movie ur likely to come out hating it at the end.

Coming out of the theater people really enjoyed it it was about 50 % full. The villain wasn't that great but if this goes forward I'm sure they will touch on spoiler for the end credits don't nightlight if you don't want to know. [blackout]zull or goyzer in the future.[/blackout]

Agreed. There were definitely jokes that fell flat, but more of them landed than anything, and the ladies had such great chemistry doing their own thing, and it really worked. I would love to see the outtakes from some of those scenes.

And I think Holtzman is officially my spirit animal. I loved her.

Man that whole sequence had me in stiches. The audience, too. They laughed throughout.

Really, liked and will be seeing it again. Others in my showing liked it so much they wanted to talk to me about it, the guy in the GB shirt. Honest opinion...I don't know what this weekend holds as far as box office, but I sense this will get a good Cinemascore and have good word of mouth. One in my theater was assuming it was going to be bad until he saw the score. He gave it a chance and really liked it.

Hearing mixed responses from folks regarding how full the theater was. Mine wasn't very full. No exact head counts, though. How'd ya'lls look?

Wondering if this might be a film that picks up business as the weekend progresses and WOM spreads.

I loved the other two films from Paul Feig (Spy and Bridesmaids), so I'll probably enjoy this! Like some parts from the trailers cracked me up. Like few hours ago, I was kinda thinking about watching it today but I want to see with more people, so I'll be seeing it this weekend.

The majority consensus by the critics rates the movie squarely where my review of the test screening placed it. AllEights and I have both been saying that the marketing was terrible since the first trailer dropped. I knew that there would be some "hated" it and some "loved" it reviews, but that most reviews would place it in the middle and that most people would find it a fun movie.

I hate "I told you so", but you have no idea how frustrating it's been to have seen a movie so far in advance of everyone, and to be met with skepticism and distrust all the way through. I should have made a separate account, because this account was linked to the email I gave the studio and I've been banned from future Sony test screenings. Oh well. I was the idiot that couldn't keep my mouth shut when there was so much misinformation going around about Mayhem.

I take it back, after watching this I have no interest in seeing any future Ghostbuster film.

This film was forced and cringy trash.

Easily Feigs worst and one of the dumbest I've seen in quite sometime. I have no idea how some of these choices were in the final cut. Extremely disappointing.

I was never one to call you out, but I have to give you props, not just for being accurate but to sticking to your guns for this long. Even with the accurate information you gave me, and I believed you, I couldn't shake that I was going to hate this film, and it was going to be a disaster.

And you know what, I just saw the film, and I really enjoyed it. In terms of a rating, it's probably a 6.5, slightly above average but not super great, but I am far from hating it. A lot of the jokes worked, the cast had good chemistry, and the effect didn't bother me at all. I liked seeing new weapons, different ghost designs.

In all honesty, this may not have been the Ghostbusters film I wanted, and yet I got exactly what I wanted anyway. I got a new Ghostbusters film that I liked, that I want to see again, and I hope does well enough to warrant more and keep the franchise going. I'm happy I can stop feeling so negative about it.

I will mention a couple negatives I didn't care for though.

-Rowan was fairly bland. Not exactly awful, but he was pretty much there to set the origin story.
-Female Slimer. Not because its a girl Slimer, but because she adds nothing and looks stupid.
-The logo ghost scene. I don't mind that Rowan takes a destructor form. What I didn't like was he becomes a literal cartoon before making his big transformation. It really took me out for a second.

The first half is very avengeresque with their weapons and PKE. Lots of scenes interspersed. The second half is mostly the dance number everyone was going on about happening in the background. There was a lot of revisited scenes. It was easily the most fun credit sequence.

I noticed that. Reminds me of what happened with Star Wars Aftermath. A bunch of people pissed off about the old star wars EU canon being replaced flooded the book's Amazon page with 1 star reviews.

I legitimately enjoyed the film. A solid 7/10 rating for me. It had its issues but overall the magnetic chemistry of the cast along with a true Ghostbusters tone and respect for the source material won me over. Plus, it was a TON of fun and I laughed pretty hard at times.

I Didn't like that it wasn't explained why the villain was so powerful? that made no sense to me at all. I think this film would of been 100% better if it was within the original timeline, and the blonde chick was Egon's daughter, and for some reason I also think that having a villain that turned out to be a character from the original would fit far better in regards to making all the ghost tech. Hell, maybe it actually could of been set up as the first new person the ghostbusters took on after the 2nd film turned bad.

2/10. This is a prime example of how bigger isn't always better. I honestly was pissed coming out of this movie, because they got this movie so, so, so wrong on many levels. Aside from Erin, the characters felt so one note. The script didn't do them any favors. One of the beautiful things about the original is, despite there not being any real character development, all of the characters felt real. In this new version, I couldn't connect to any of them.

The humor. Dear God did I sit there stonefaced for just about the entire movie. I chuckled a few times, like with Abby's soup. That's it. Again, with the original, the humor played out nicely. It wasn't forced like in this one. The situation lead the comedy, not the other way around. And that fart joke? How does anyone still find that funny anymore? I rolled my eyes with that. And Kevin. A person can't be that stupid.

So the movie did get off to a decent start. [BLACKOUT]The idea and story behind that ghost is genuinely creepy, and was a nice play from the original's library opening. [/BLACKOUT] After that, the movie went way downhill.

The original cast. It was kind of a hoot to see [BLACKOUT]Sigourney Weaver play such a different character from Dana, despite being there for what seemed like a few seconds[/BLACKOUT]. Paul Feig[BLACKOUT]- sorry, I mean Bill Murray - however, what a waste. He didn't seem into this movie at all.[/BLACKOUT]

The new cast? Erin was decent, Abby wasn't really funny, Holtzmann had her moments, and Patty just needed to shut up at certain times. Their chemistry was ok, but the script didn't do anything for them.

Rowan sucked. Didn't feel threatening. This movie needed a stronger antagonist.

That third act. Good God, that was WAY too loud and abrasive. Like way, WAY loud. Another strength of the original was how low key it was. My second biggest gripe with the ending: [BLACKOUT]So they have to drag Rowan through that portal, and they do that by shooting his lower region. Seriously? Does this movie hate men that much?[/BLACKOUT]

All in all, the script was the major issue here. The actors did what they could with it, so I can't really fault them with that. But, please, no sequel. [BLACKOUT]I don't even want to know what they'd do to Zuul.[/BLACKOUT]

Positives:

- The opening. [BLACKOUT]I thought it was a nice play off of the original's opener, and it was creepy.[/BLACKOUT] It honestly was a solid start.

- The running gag about soup.

- Kate McKinnon got a couple of chuckles from me.

- The tribute to Harold Ramis.

- The old cast.

- Hearing the theme song on the big screen.

Negatives:

- Everything else in the movie.
