The New Ghostbusters - Part 9

Excited to see it today. Hopefully can give it a 7, or 8 (both ratings are what good blockbusters typically get from me).

Can I be smug (just a little) yet?

The majority consensus by the critics rates the movie squarely where my review of the test screening placed it. AllEights and I have both been saying that the marketing was terrible since the first trailer dropped. I knew that there would be some "hated" it and some "loved" it reviews, but that most reviews would place it in the middle and that most people would find it a fun movie.

I hate "I told you so", but you have no idea how frustrating it's been to have seen a movie so far in advance of everyone, and to be met with skepticism and distrust all the way through. I should have made a separate account, because this account was linked to the email I gave the studio and I've been banned from future Sony test screenings. Oh well. I was the idiot that couldn't keep my mouth shut when there was so much misinformation going around about Mayhem.

Hell yes you can! I've always enjoyed reading your attempts to correct misinformation. Mind you, its never really changed my view on this movie, but I was never going to like it. The cast and crew just don't speak to my sense of humor. But everything you have predicted has essentially come true, boast a little bit.

On a side note, I saw a Paul Feig interview on TV this morning, that man is so obnoxiously self-congratulatory. He was rambling about how everyone in Hollywood thinks comedy should be small, but he does "big comedies." First, you're not the first person alive to make a comedy that is larger in scale, its been done for decades. Second, comedy is generally better when it is small because people can relate to it. Humor is best drawn from situations which people encounter in their day to day life. Its relatable, its happened to us, that's why its funny (no one does this better than Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm). Finally, get the **** over yourself, man. He is reaching JJ Abrams/Bryan Singer levels of obnoxious arrogance, simply doing interviews to tell everyone how great he is.

That's kinda how I feel about the whole thing. I'm fine with an all-female reboot, but I'm not a fan of three out of the four leads (and while I like McCarthy, she's not one of those actresses where I'm like, "I must see all her films!"). As for Feig, I don't think he's as great as he apparently thinks he is either. Bridesmaids was good but it wasn't SO amazing that it merited the near-universal praise it received. It dragged towards the end and all the stuff with Rebel Wilson and her creepy brother was nauseating and not funny at all.

And as for this movie, perhaps the marketing is just terrible, but I've seen all the trailers and I might have laughed once or twice. Nothing I've seen has made me feel really excited to see it. That's just my two cents. I do feel, however, that there has been a lot of sexism towards the film. Unfortunately though, because of that, I worry that if I tell someone I'm not particularly interested in it, they're going to think that it's because I'm sexist.

Saying "eh. I'm not interested " is nothing like "this is shouldn't have been made at all. That isnt GB."

That last Terminator didn't interest me or a lot of people. That doesn't mess there isn't a great idea left in the Terminator franchise.

I liked the TV show The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

I liked the TV show The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

That's part of what made Genisys so disappointing. We had good Terminator, then they got rid of it, and gave us... Genisys.

I know the two aren't inherently linked like that, but it's basically what happened.

There is indeed a difference between "why remake Ghostbusters?" and "female leads? this movie sucks!" where the line is deliberately blurred by those who are offended at female ghostbusters more than they are they remade Ghostbusters in the first place so they can hide their real opinion in one with a legitimate merit which had nothing to do with gender.

What is irksome is people who claim it isn't because they are female but then almost all of their critiques revolve around things about the leads, who happen to be female and probably would have been ignored had they been male instead.

I was originally in the why remake Ghostbusters side long, long before female leads were announced (as were a lot of people) but I had and have no problem with the female leads. The reviews say this remake is not terrible and is decent so I am probably going to see it in the theater.

Unfortunately there is a lot of "boys club" mentality still left in the fanbase, despite the huge side of the fanbase that happens to be female. There shouldn't be a boys club and girls club seperation when it comes to almost anything.

It shouldn't be this hard to just let the movie stand on its own likability. Instead a bunch of you just have to throw water on it and try to prove some kind of point that eludes logic.

What kind of Mayhem misinfo was going around, bluejake?

Ah. Can someone spoil me on Rowan's character/motivations?

Loser that hates people and wants to destroy the metaphysical barriers that separate the dimension of the living and the dimension of the dead.

Great ......

So basically they unnecessarily reboot a movie that never needed it in the first place and made it "not terrible" in the process.

I hate Hollywood sometimes.

Yeah a reboot should never be just ok or meh or not terrible. I hate remakes. Funny how mediocre is ok for this folm but anything else gets massacred

You know, as much **** as the marketing team has gotten, their strategy was kind of brilliant. They set expectations so low that what is, by all accounts, an average to mediocre movie, is being received as a win because people were expecting total crap. They lowered expectations so much that average = great.

That's how marketing works sometimes. Except for maybe Apple who just has to put up a logo of their next thing and they sell droves.

So is the film a reboot or a sequel? The advertising was confusing on that.

That's exactly what it is.

I enjoyed it.

It's not without it's faults and it's pretty much what I expected but I had a really good time with it.

I absolutely LOVED Kate McKinnon in this. :hrt: She's spectacular. :D

(Sigourney Weaver definitely had the best cameo)

Any Thursday night preview reports yet?

$3.4 million

But I don't know why they keep saying Thursday night, the theaters I was looking at had this playing all day Thursday. I don't know if it was the same for everywhere else.

I am way behind on my movie watching, but I said I'd keep an open mind on this and see it if the reviews are decent, which they are, so I'm down with seeing this.

Sony's doing the same with box office. Sticking to $40 million for the weekend instead of $50 million which it's tracking to do. Overestimation looks bad.

To me, this wasn't mediocre. So many really enjoyed it and had a great time. I'll see it again before a numeric value is assigned, but I laughed...a lot.

Only a 7 and 10 here.

Less than ID4 2, wich opened to $41M... I wonder if this could do under $40M
