With the
Blackest Night story and most of the PC GLC's seemingly abandoned, I've plotted out my version of how the arc will end, freeing and setting up some Green Lanterns and their mythologies for future seasons. To help me realize this, I've decided to try this character once more with the certainty that I can actually post this time...
. THE NEW ULTIMATE DC RPG .
Character Application
.Screen name: Batman
.Character you wish to portray: Ultimate Hal Jordan
.Hero, villain, or walking the line?: Hero
.Powers and physical attributes: No powers on his own. Hal is a normal human male with experience as a pilot for the United States Navy, a street-smart brawler, and an adept tactician. When endowed with the alien Lantern Corps' power ring, however, Jordan is granted the abilities of energy manipulation, flight, and being able to form constructs based off of his own personal willpower and imagination.
.Origin and backstory (as you see it): Driven by the death of his father during adolescence, Henry 'Hal' Jordan worked to follow his dad's footsteps and became a pilot for the US Air Force, earning both top honors and criticism for his brash decisions and daredevil antics. But Jordan's life took an unexpected turn when he was chosen by the alien police force known as The Galactic Lantern Corps, offered the chance to become a Green Lantern corpsman. Hal accepted, though at the cost of his marraige to longtime love Carol Ferris, and soon proved himself worthy to make rank.
But a month after being inducted, Hal left the Corps in disgust, retiring his rank and ring for a variety of reasons. Though he suffered harsh bigotry from his fellow Corpsmen for being from Earth, following the dark turn of another human Lantern in William Hand, Hal revealed that it was ultimately his human desire to rejoin the life he had lived on Earth that caused him to resign. Seeing it as a weakness and unworthy of their Corps, The Guardians immediately accepted Jordan's resignation, instead giving his ring to a young cadet named Kyle Rayner.
Taken back to Earth, Jordan was again driven to do the impossible - try and salvage his marraige, his career, and his life in general after turning away from it for reasons that no one would ever believe. But while his turmoil to rebuild his life continues, unbeknownst to Hal, the threat of a Blackest Night falls upon his former squadron...
.The burning question - Why this character?: A number of reasons, despite my own reservations about picking up another hero. But mainly, I did this because it was a story I felt I had to tell. My first attempt to apply for Hal in here was little more than an impulsive need to be apart of the GLC - it was uninspired and careless. And when I began searching for a third character to embark on, the reasons behind most of my choices felt the same. But the idea of taking a character like Hal Jordan, who's almost always portrayed as bigger than life, and starting him off with a 'behind the mask' story appealed to me. It allows me to delve into who he is when he's not wearing the ring, and forces me to make him as interesting as I can... before I throw him straight into the action.
I've also grown to really love the Green Lantern mythos, in the past couple of years. Geoff Johns' stellar work being the obvious example for that, Hal Jordan's become one of my favorite characters in the DCU, among the ranks of what I believed to be the previously untouchable Superman and Flash. I hope to reflect that in my arc, aswell as more than a couple of nods to science fiction in general, with the Star Wars and Star Trek films being big inspirations for this arc's conception.
.How will this version of your character differ from others? How will it be Ultimate?: With all of the asthetic differences already established between the DCU GLC, and the Ultimate GLC, I think it'd just be easier to explain how this Hal is the same. He'll still be dealing with the death of his father. He'll still be trying to prove himself beyond just a 'rookie'. He'll still be letting everyone he cares about down, at first. And he'll still be trying to do what's right as a Green Lantern. What
won't be the same is a key part of the DCU Hal Jordan - that he's, above all else, fearless. I'm actually taking him a bit in the opposite direction... because at this point in his life, Hal has alot to fear. It's his incredible willpower that has always remained his strongest characteristic, so that's going to be the force that'll lead him out of this dismal road he's been travelling on.
.What do you believe you can bring to the RPG?: A fandom and a knowledge of recent GL storylines, which have more or less been the sole inspiration behind the Ultimate Corps established so far. I also like to think that I can handle the task of continuing on with the abandoned Blackest Night story, being a massive fan of that series so far.
.Provide a sample post as the character you wish to portray, in three paragraphs or more:
"You said you've broken the sound barrier how many times?"
Hal Jordan smirked. After only twenty minutes, he had managed to deduce that the blonde infront of him was about as clueless as a turkey during Thanksgiving season. But god... that smile of her's. The minute he saw it from across the bar, he honestly couldn't think of a better way to spend his night than leaving here with her.
Pretending to count off in his head, Hal looked back at her, certain of his answer.
"Three times. Well technically, two... but the air force doesn't necessarily jot down any test flights on a man's record."
The blonde widened her eyes, seemingly impressed.
"Gosh. And you left all that behind?"
"Nah, you never leave something like that behind. I just got assigned to another unit."
Jordan chuckled, at the thought. The woman didn't know the half of it.
"Insurance technicality, and soforth. After awhile, they couldn't really afford to have me. It's really just a long, boring story that I'm sure you wouldn't want to hear..."
She leaned in closer, an inviting look on her face.
"Oh, but you're wrong, Mr. Jordan. I'd absolutely love to hear it."
Hal was speechless, but without a second thought, he was also more than eager to oblige. Leaning closer to her himself, Jordan instantly returned her sultry expression.
"On one condition. We pick up the conversation at my place."
The blonde giggled, obviously intoxicated, but still trying not to spill her martini.
"It's a deal. Let's go."
The smile on Hal's face couldn't get any wider.
Yep. Still got it.
.Do you know how to post pictures on the Hype?:
