I'm a bit late to the party... wow the thread exploded! Like I said, much of this is past things that may have already been discussed and closed.
Just stating my opinion on things I found most interesting in the last 5 pages or so when I was absent.

As far as I know, and I follow pop culture pretty well, Dylan O' Brien hasn't been in contention for Spider-Man. He was never been reported by the trades, nor have I heard of any weighty rumors about him being in the running. It's just that his fans (and some people) want him to be Peter Parker. I'll admit that I like the guy and he would be a great fit, but this becoming a self fulfilling prophecy.
No one has been in contention... not officially at least. :p

In Variety's defense, I don't think this quote implies that Sony has ever said that they were going with these actors, only that they have been mentioned as being considered, and they were, but just on reddit and rumor websited. Neither Lerman or O'Brien fit what Marvel is going for IMO, so I'd argue that they were never been considered not because they don't like them, but because I think they simply don't fit what I think they are going for, which is actors that can play a 15-16 year old Peter Parker.
Fixed. :D
It's great that we can be honest about what we are saying as speculation, and what we know as facts.
Many of those guys look so old, if Marvel is excluding a lot of those more talented and better fitting actors because of their age, then this short list makes no sense
Agreed. At least2 /5 of those look older than Dylan, but DYlan could easily fit in as portraying the same age as the others.
Another kind of performance from Timothée:

No... plz no...
Now I the talk about him being smug has been confirmed. :( I actually started to like him.

Haha wowwwww
So sad how ignorant so many people are today... what next? Protesting by stealing from stores and beating cops and their cop cars while not even having lived in the area but being recruited by some.. idk... communists or something???
O waiiii...
Lol remember a while back when we were told there's a 95% chance Spider-Man won't be white. That was funny.
:lmao:
So funneh.
Sneider either was claiming he knew something, or he didn't know anything and therefore knows nothing on the subject. :/ 95% is well sure enough that you could write a story on it. Heck, in today's world people question whether they can even believe they exist with lower percentages like 75%...

Except Garfield was on a REAL short list not this crap Sneider published that isn't even a real short list but just five random names he heard were auditioning for the role.

Frodo: Evans wasn't on the short list for Captain America.
Exactly! Speculation from one guy, with unproven and unknown 'sources' is almost as bad as redditleaker.
apparently this isn't even a legitimate shortlist.
Nope, it isn't, never was. All you have to do is read the article to know that.
I really don't know what to think is actually happening, but I don't see why my theory isn't plausible. I'm still pulling for Dylan.
IR ead your theory. (I didn't quote it but I did read it) I think your theory is very plausible, but does seem to lack motive. Why would Marvel break down their fanbase to try to bring em back up? I would get it if they revealed that RL was not telling the truth, trying to shut his voice out from the fanbase, but pretending that Dylan hasn't even been chosen as a top 5? Naw. That only gets people to hope that other actors will get thero le.
it's such a shame because most people are now gonna believe these 5 are among the top contenders and they're gonna just gonna let go of o'brien
Ikr? :/ I hate it when there is bad and misleading press.
That's Sony/Marvel's evil plan. Beat us down to build us back up.
Hehheh... not sure if serious.
And now, everyone relaying his new report is treating it like a real shortlist when he so clearly suggested it wasn't.

Maybe Sneider's preemptively covering his tracks after the whole 95% fiasco. But it's a pity everyone relaying the report isn't reading it in its entirety.
IKR? From what I have seen though at least people are basically saying that according to Sneider thats the top 5, so hopefully not too many people falsley believe it to be 100% true. (OR even 95% :p)
Anton yelchin could have been good even though he looks just like Harry. Evan Peters also would have been friggin awesome. I think id be equally pleased with either Evan as I would with Dylan (if evan was like five years younger of course)
I was rooting for Anton when I first started SHH, this forum was one of the first I posted on! :)
Funny you mention that:

0:40 in.
He does look like that PP for those few frames at least. Haven't watched that series. I do know that instead of saying people could be great for the role because they fit some PP in some comic or cartoon, would be silly. That's one of the lowest on our priorities. As it has been made clear, PP looks very different in most every comic depending on the drawer or cartoonist, so obviously we don't need someone to look straight out of the book for a live action film! :cwink: As long as they don't look like a jock then they should work ok. The person's build can be looked at, but looking at their facial features compared to comics is pretty much useless time wasting. :p

So Nat Wolff retweeted Vincent D'Onofrio's endorsement of him as Spidey.

Looks Nat Wolff is in the running.. maybe Sneider isn't a bogus scooper. :whatever:

hmm interesting ... is he trying to build his own hype?i wonder if that tweet will be up for much longer

I feel ashamed to say this...

Looking for more videos of Asa Butterfield to try to convince myself that he could be a good Peter Parker, I actually watched a video called "Asa Butterfield Cute & Silly Moments" thinking that might be a collection of clips that show off his humour.

He's so dry and uncharismatic!

Lol, welcome to the club.

If anything this isn't in his favor. Why would the actor he says is the strongest candidate put himself out there like that? Marvel havent kept it under lock and key for him to associate himself to the role like that publicly..

I looked at his feed, and it's there but it says "This tweet is unavailable." I don't know what this means in Twitter-speak.

He's not a bogus scooper. He's just an ***hole who posts click bait articles.

And of course he's in he running. Every white actor in Hollywood under 25 (over 15) is in the running.

Nat Wolff? But he looks just as old as O'Brien, if not older. So what happened to all this talk of Marvel wanting to keep Peter in high school for a trilogy? How do they plan to do that if they have someone who already looks older than O'Brien? And this whole idea of just casting 17-20 year olds seems like a technicality if they're getting someone who doesn't even look within that age range. Why shut out 23 year olds then?

I agree, that isn't a good video.
What I will say in Asa's defence is, I have seen pretty much all of Andrew Garfield's movies including his shoe string independents and the only clip of his being funny and charismatic is that clip from Doctor Parnassus (where he mocks Heath Ledger). Several movies and one clip. You can only act what you are given.

You can't blame Asa for only being cast in dramatic roles. Almost certainly Asa's agent will have a 'comedy reel' that can be sent to potential film makers.

Nat Wolff actually looks older than 25. I think someone is lying about his age.

What is 'in the running' though? They can't personally audition thousands of actors.

That's the point. They aren't shutting them out. It's all BS rumors. One would be an idiot to think guys like Dylan, Lerman, and others in that late-under 25 range wouldn't be considered.

Yeah, those are completely unconvincing. Harryoscop posted that before as evidence that Asa can be funny, but that didn't persuade me one single bit.

Nat Wolff actually looks older than 25. I think someone is lying about his age.

As I said before, he reminds me quite a bit of Dustin Hoffman in the Graduate.

Wolff looks more like a college graduate than even a college student.

Nat Wolff looks even less like Peter Parker than Asa does. I get the same vibes from Nat as others have explained they get from Chalametwhateverhisnameis. He strikes me as overconfident and has a *****ebag aura to him.

Not thousands, no. But don't underestimate their ability to have few hundred read, and shrink that down to a few dozen.
