The Northman

I still remember people were being like "lol, why would she have braces back then?"

And other people were like "they'll remove them in post, this aren't finished effects, lol"

Those people are just dumber than a bag of hammers.

There is no historical evidence that the vikings have dental braces. Let alone the delicate metal braces of today.

And this filing and painting practice seems to be a recent discovery so most laymen aren't going to know about it or think that is what was going on with her teeth.

That is not from braces. Its believed they filed their teeth and put pigment in the grooves.

New Studies show Vikings filed their teeth, had female warriors and loved bling

Saw the trailer attached to another movie I saw recently (You Won't Be Alone) and have to say, between The Witch and this movie (along with Last Night in Soho to an extent), I feel like Anya Taylor-Joy is becoming one of those actresses destined to keep playing historical roles, almost like Keira Knightley.

This movie is also now officially on my radar and can't wait to see it. I'm in for anything by Eggers, and the amount of talent in this movie is awesome.

How was You Won't Be Alone?

How was You Won't Be Alone?

So many non-spoiler things that I could write about it - overall just really well-done and very well-directed. Kinda felt like an Eggers movie in historical authenticity and atmosphere - all of the dialog was subtitled, with everyone speaking in an unknown language in an unknown time (nothing was shown on-screen to indicate the time or place, I had to use Google to find that out), and it felt like a subtle horrific drama, if that makes any sense. Slower and deliberate pacing, with none of the traditional Americanized horror movie cliches. Very stripped-down tone & feel, with a highly unusual attention to humanizing the "villain" characters as well - so much in fact, that the "villains" practically didn't feel like villains.

Although it's not really Eggers' The Witch in terms of story or cinematography (the vast majority of the movie is set in brightly-lit outdoor scenes during the day) and isn't really as "dramatic" as it could've been (it has a consistently subtle / solemn / serious tone with very few changes in dramatic intensity), that's the closest parallel I can think of, although it's not all that close. It also reminded me of The Nightingale 2018 in its directness of immersing the viewer into a natural and realistic yet frightening time & place.

It's one of the rare movies I'd have to rewatch to give a fairer score, but offhand I'd rate it at least 8/10 (could go higher on a rewatch).

Btw Noomi Rapace actually isn't in it very much either, if you might be watching for her. Not that I timed it, but I'd guess 10 minutes tops?

This article has what I'd call minor spoilers if you want to know more about the plot: Life through a witch’s eyes in ‘You Won’t Be Alone’ » Borneo Bulletin Online

Just came back from watching this.

It had beautiful visuals, stunning cinematography and was quite brutal and gory.

It is not something I will ever watch again though, due to how heavy it was.

A lot of the reviews seem to agree with you. Impressive film in many ways but not one that many people seem eager to rewatch or try to dig into.

I definitely plan on rewatching it at some point. I like the way it included the mystical, supernatural, and religious elements and how they were integrated.

Every film lover should see this movie while it's in theaters at least once.

I eagerly await seeing The Northman this weekend.

On an unrelated note, it'll probably never happen at this point, I still hope The Lighthouse gets a 4K release.
