The Northman

I was getting massive Berserk vibes more than anything. Overcoming your fate, the choice between love and vengeance…felt very much in keeping with what Miura was talking about in his opus.

Also this is a ****ing masterpiece, undoubtedly film of the year.
Whole vibe with
visions, visions of future, destined path, tree
is pure later stage SnK if you know what I mean. Even after having vision knowing he will have kids he goes
"ill steal their freedom before they steal mine"
if you get me and ultimately changes his choice.

But Vinland Saga most of it. Path of revenge. Specially that scene where he doesnt care after taking a village fort about anyone or slaves, people dying. I mean movie skipped alot between him kid and then adult with just "many years later", but you can fill gaps he learned to fight and ultimately kill as still being kid to survive. You can fill gaps yourself what was happening if you watched Vinland.

Listening to The Big Picture interview with Eggers, he seemed pretty ticked off when this film had go through multiple screen tests with the studio.

THE NORTHMAN Used CGI Genitals During Naked Fight Scene - Nerdist

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the director shared the CGI was actually a preventative measure to avoid anyone’s “bits [getting] chopped off.” Who among us can disagree with that? Instead, the actors wore little thongs to cover the goods.

THIS WAS AMAZING.

I didn't expect it to get so gory, was grinning ear to ear. I loved the slight twist. The trippy aspects were a delight.

We're eating good with this, Green Knight, and The Tragedy Of Macbeth.

Also, I need someone to make drugs where Bjork shows up.

I'm thirsty as **** for Eggers to take on some of the other legends. I mean there is an embarrassment of riches to choose from. Take your pick.

Beowulf
The Volsunga Saga
The Iliad and The Odyssey
Golden Legend
Paradise Lost
Dante's Divine Comedy

I either want him to do pirates or something in space. I'm saddened he isn't doing Nosferatu - **** you, Morbius.

No adaptions, unless he does a Vonnegut novel; preferably Player Piano or The Sirens Of Titan.

Berserker? Vinland Saga? nah, this movie is obviously a

Conan the Barbarian

movie.

Not only with many aspects of the plot, but with literal scenes taken from Arnold's film.

I tell ya. It gotta at least be an inspiration.

YESSS give me a brutal AF take on Achilles, Hector and Agamemnon. Give me the movie that Troy should have been.

Finally seeing this tomorrow and I can’t wait. I’m a little angry at my friend for not being able to go until then haha. I almost just went myself the other day.

Just watched it. Wow, just WOW. I loved this film. It’s like Hamlet crossed with Vikings crossed with MacBeth crossed with Skyrim crossed with I Saw the Devil. Skarsgard, Anya and Nicole all deserve Oscar consideration, and obviously Eggers does as well. It will take a little while to process all my thoughts on it but I thought it was pretty much fantastic. It’s a lot smaller in scale than I thought it would be; the trailers had me expecting a lot more Viking raids but this mostly followed one man’s stealthy quest and it worked very well.
I also appreciated that, despite the familiar story material, there was a lot that didn’t play out as expected. It was a surprise that Fjolnir lost his kingdom and ended up on a small farm. I was worried at first that would kill the momentum but it still worked very well. Of course, the biggest shocker came with Queen Gudrun’s revelation… I felt bad for her at first but then when she said she gave the order to kill Amleth as a child… yeah, she lost my sympathy. I totally get that she could never love the child since he was the product of rape but still. Giving the order to kill the poor kid? Damn. And then she tries to go all Jocasta on Amleth… yeesh. I was glad when Amleth killed her.

Also loved the mysticism and how it was handled. It’s never totally clear whether what we’re seeing is real or not and we’re left to draw our own conclusions. But for my money, Amleth definitely fought a Draugr and chopped his head off with his magic sword haha.

Also, this movie makes me want to book a flight to Iceland again ASAP. Such a beautiful country.

9.5/10

I thought Claes Bang was lowkey the MVP of the film. I thought Fjolnir was the most fleshed out character and allowed Bang to deliver a more complete performance.

Skarsgard was a ****ing animal though. To reach that level of ferocity and energy take after take. I was exhausted just watching him.

Bang definitely gave a more understated performance than I was expecting. He was definitely good but I guess I was just wowed more by Skars, Anya and Nicole. But there were no weak links in this film, that’s for sure.
