The Northman

Bruh I could not be more excited for this movie, especially given the fact that they gave Eggers such a big budget and let him pretty much do the movie he wanted.

After The Lighthouse I was never expecting this to be GA friendly, but man I do hope general audiences give it a decent shot atleast on opening weekend if things are more back to normal by then.

I want more bold and ambitious, period EPICS like this and The Green Knight, but I'm not expecting either one to set the BO on fire, although maybe one of them will end up being a sleeper hit.

Will this have be a mythological period film or will it just be a period film? Whichever way I’m excited.

That's a good question since both of Eggers other films have a mythical/supernatural element (though those elements could also be considered possibly more psychological or metaphorical).

So far I haven't seen any hint of mythology to this one, but you never know. Maybe one of the Vikings hallucinates about the Norse gods a lot, haha.

Björk is apparently credited as 'The Slav Witch' so it could be like Eggers' previous movies in that it's left ambiguous to the viewer.

I read up a bit on Amleth and now I’m curious whether this film will just cover the stuff that Hamlet was based on or if it will continue on to Amleth’s later adventures in Britain. I’m guessing it’s mostly the former but it would be more interesting if it delves into the other stuff too.

The funny part is that Shakespeare could have made Hamlet 2 if he hadn’t killed him in his duel with Laertes because there was a whole sequel’s worth of stuff that happened to Amleth after avenging his dad.

Well

She only has one scene. Granted that could change and whatnot, but tis' it so far.

Not clicking that spoiler tag, BN. Much as I want to. :funny:

Willem Dafoe Teases ‘Nefarious’ Role in Robert Eggers’ ‘Northman’: ‘A Huge, Muscular Movie’

“It’s a huge movie,” Dafoe said. “It’s a muscular movie. My involvement isn’t nearly as expansive as ‘The Lighthouse.’ I’m in a supporting role, but it was thrilling. The level of research and detail is there, but on a much bigger scale. During the pandemic, they continued to work and to research things to build, and somehow they did. We gave them the time to prepare for this huge jump in budget and size of production. The sets are fantastic.”

Despite the jump in budget, Dafoe said fans should expect to see the same level of historical precision and artistry that Eggers brought to his smaller indie films. The actor said, “You have the same kind of detail he gave to his smaller films. Sometimes when you have a jump in budget, directors can have a hard time and they end up delegating and lose control. I didn’t feel that. I felt like he was still driving it.”

“The Northman” is set in the 10th century and stars Alexander Skarsgård as a Viking prince who seeks revenge for his father’s murder. The cast also includes Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, and Björk. Dafoe stars in the film as Heimir the Fool, although the actor told IndieWire, “He’s a court figure, but that’s my day job. I have a surprising night job that’s a little more nefarious, let’s say.”

These reshoots worry me. Could be standard helpful stuff but I read a lot of negative test screening reactions, so I hope he’s not forced to compromise. A lot of the criticisms were to do with Skarsgard being one note and unlikable and the film dragging.

We can only hope. :csad:

I feel like, if the negative reactions are true, this could end up being another one of those movies that's for a specific crowd. I really don't want Eggers vision to be tampered with.

Sounds like Valhalla Rising.

That’s every Eggers film though. I can’t imagine regular joes and janes walking in To The Lighthouse liking it very much.

Remember when someone tried to sue Drive because it wasn’t more like Fast and the Furious lol

These are the kinds of people at these test screenings sometimes lol
