The Official '52' Thread

Oh well I guess it was fun while it lasted. I guess whining and typing in big fonts wins over everything else.

meh, I guess I'll go pm my friends about my defeat

You go do that, and remember, the law always prevails.

*insert Iron Man picture here*

Unless you're an Eternal; cuz that would make you the only person next to Iron Fist's lawyer to make Tony look like a jackass

Yeah, that was quite a bit of ownage there. I wonder if the giant gold robot next to san fransisco will ever be talked about again.

Why am I the only one posting this poo? Ah well, three more weeks left.

5.2 ABOUT 52 #49 WITH EDITOR MICHAEL SIGLAIN
Things are moving along fast now in 52…the JSA mounts an assault on Oolong Island, only to be met by the Great Ten, Will Magnus launches his Mini Metal Men against Egg Fu; an omelet is made, with all the requisite egg breaking; the JSA invades, and Atom Smasher lets Black Adam go.

So – over to Editor Michael Siglain…and a quick note – he’s frazzled, he’s tired, and he’s getting married this week, so answers are short.

Michael Siglain: All right, gang. Not much time this week due to the fact that everyone here at DC is hard at work putting the finishing touches on the 52 week 52. It's an action-packed, oversized, and emotional issue that will conclude this series with a bang. Also, on a personal note, I'm getting married in a few short hours, so let's not waste any more time and get to the good stuff, so I can get to my cocktail hour.

Newsarama: Let's start at the start - the Justice Society is beating on the walls of Oolong to get Adam. Can you explain why they're so hot and heavy to get in to rescue Adam from being tortured while they didn't enter Biyala, even when it was apparent that there was no resistance against them? I mean - on the surface, it seems pretty callous - they weren't going to invade a sovereign nation when Adam was killing innocent women and children, but now, they're eager to invade Chinese territory because Adam is being tortured. Huh?

MS: The JSA are going after a wanted war criminal. Black Adam needs to be prosecuted for his actions in Biayla, and the JSA aren't too keen with China for harboring a wanted terrorist.

NRAMA: Er…okay.

Moving along then…Chang Tzu's Science Squad? - okay, you guys are nuts for not spinning off a series...

MS: Oh, just you wait, Brady! No, seriously. Wait.

NRAMA: Speaking of the cholesterol-laden bad guy...what's his endgame here? Kill the heroes and spark a war? Is the eggy guy thinking straight?

MS: He's a giant egg. I think his thought process is a bit scrambled. C'mon, like you didn't see that one coming?

Egg-Fu's endgame will be fully revealed next week.

NRAMA: So from what Will said, Plutonium is just inherently bad? That's its nature?

MS: Yep! Boy, easy questions this week. I fear for next week...

NRAMA: The information that Alan states about Chang Tzu - he...received that on the spot, right? From...Thundermind?

MS: Yes, Thundermind "gave" Alan the information about Egg-Fu.

NRAMA: Does that make Thundermind a double agent?

MS: No. Thundermind's not playing for both sides. He's righting a wrong.

NRAMA: Over to a reader question, then…

There seems to be some confusion about the "Double Agent" that has been mentioned. I was under the impression the only double agent was Mannheim's on Oolong Island. But some people seem to think there's a double agent in the Great Ten. Did I miss something, or did they?

MS: Great Ten. Look for the big guy who looks like an Egg. He's the one.

NRAMA: Remind us - how was Morrow right about the tablets?

MS: Magnus was a super genius after all!

NRAMA: Certainly was. Okay – so World War III next week?

MS: Yep, next week it's WAR! Black Adam has escaped, and he's out for blood! His actions will ignite events that will be felt throughout the entire DC Universe. The story happens in 52 week 50, and the expanded story is told through the four World War III books that also hit the stands on April 18th. Last week a reader asked how to read these books. I'd go with left to right. I'd also start with 52 week 50, and then I'd read the minis. The story is told in its entirety in 52 week 50, and the minis expand upon the story and explain how the war impacts the greater DC Universe.

And let’s hit those covers…
[buncha WWIII covers we've already seen]

MS: But wait, there's more! Justiniano and Walden Wong did a truly amazing job capturing the scope and scale of WWIII, and it would be a shame if we didn't share some of their fantastic artwork. So let's get a look at a certain showdown:

MS: That's all the time we've got for today's installment. I've got to put on my tux and imagine that I look like James Bond. Happy Friday the 13th, everyone. See you next week for WORLD WAR III!
I know every single one of those characters. That's kinda sad, isn't it.

EDIT: Well, except for the cheetah. I have no idea what the poo a cheetah is doing there.

That cover is just sex.

I hate the fact that JG Jones isn't doing Countdown covers. Damn him for not wanting to kill himself!

Is anyone else who stuck with 52, not getting Countdown?

I don't think I can handle being invested in another weekly series so soon. Really feel like I need a break!

I'm not gonna buy those 4 WW3 minis unless I feel unsatisfied with week 50 and need to know more.

Well, from my understanding, the 4 WWIII issues will not only expand, but explain what happened to so many of the heroes that went through some kind of change during the OYL gap.

Didn't DC already have a WWIII, and superman started wearing an S with Black instead of yellow after it?

I know Q is dead, but didn't they say how multiple characters would die? Maybe that happens in WWIII.

If this has already been said in that interview BrianWilly posted, then oh well. I didn't read it cause I don't want to know anything til I read WWIII.

Bleh. I know he's been featured in this series several times, but it still bothers me that GA is there. He is supposed to be on that island. This completely messes up continuity cause of what's happening during this OYL gap in his own title.

That was actually after the Our Worlds at War crossover. He wore his "S" with black behind it instead of yellow as a tribute to all the heroes who fell in OWAW.

World War III was a JLA arc where Mageddon, some crazy-powerful living weapon created by the Old Gods (the dudes who came before the New Gods like Orion and Darkseid), came to Earth. Mageddon was built to manipulate people's emotions and turn them against each other, working as a weapon by driving its enemies to kill themselves. When Mageddon finally reached Earth, the JLA got the Flash and the Glimmer--the last survivor of the giant planet Wonderworld--to power a machine that accessed the Red--Animal Man's morphogenetic field linking every living animal in the universe--through the Amazons' Purple Healing Ray to evolve every human being on Earth into superhumans. Zauriel also died and returned to Heaven, where he convinced the hosts of angels to fight alongside mankind, and Mageddon was finally defeated by the combined forces of the angels and the entire, powered populace of Earth.

So the answer to your question is, no. They never had WWIII.

Technically, they did. At least, as much of a World War III as this one in 52 is going to be. Mageddon's influence started affecting people when he entered our solar system, so there were skirmishes all over the world for a little while, with the JLA struggling to contain conflicts before the angels could put a stop to the fighting altogether.

That JLA arc should've been named something else. It doesn't make sense to call it WWIII. This 52 arc makes much more sense to call it WWIII.

How so? The JLA arc was about a war that affected the entire world. This 52 arc is about the same thing, only from a different perspective. The title is appropriate for both, since "World War IV" is never going to be an option unless we out here in the real world have another, official world war like WWI and WWII.

Because, the JLA arc didn't start as an inner conflict in the world. An outer influence started it all. That's why I think it's dumb to call that arc WWIII. If it had to do with the Old Gods (who are from the 4th world I'm guessing since you mentioned New Gods reference) then it shouldn't have a whole different name. I just don't see why they decided to go with WWIII. That's dumb.

In 52, the conflict arises from within the world and between nations and such. It just makes so much more sense. Some "alien" (not the best word to use, I know, but that's what I chose) outside force didn't influence this conflict.
