I highly doubt Strange will show up here, aside from his connections with the name Defenders he has nothing in common with the types of characters they are portraying. Plus his powers aren't suited for a television show.
I think it depends on who plays Doctor Strange. If he's "I only do movies" actor, we won't see him in Defenders. If it's someone who has done both then don't rule out seeing him in Defenders in between his film and Avengers 3.
That assumes that he'd be in Avengers 3. I don't really see Whedon or Feige doing that.
Why not? It's going to take more than joining forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy for the Avengers to defeat Thanos, so I would expect that whoever they introduce for Phase 3 will be in Avengers 3.
A lineup of the current Avengers (Thor, Cap, Stark, Hulk, BW, Hawkeye plus Wanda and Pietro), plus the Guardians (Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket Raccoon) as well as various allies (Nick Fury, Falcon, Iron Patriot) are not going to be enough to defeat Thanos.
Because that's generally not the approach they've taken to these movies. It's not about "what would be the most powerful team up," it's "what combination of characters would make for the best story?" Like, I doubt the Guardians will be in Avengers 3 either. Avengers 3 is going to be about The Avengers, not a bunch of guest stars.
A movie with all of those characters plus Dr. Strange sounds terrible.
If Thanos is a threat though and he becomes all powerful, then how is the current lineup of Avengers going to stop him? Thanos is going to be more powerful than Loki and Ultron put together.
I don't know how this lineup of:
- Iron Man
- Captain America
- Hulk
- Thor
- Black Widow
- Hawkeye
- Quicksilver
- Scarlet Witch
- Vision (maybe if Jarvis becomes him)
can defeat Thanos by themselves without help.
That may be a real issue that Whedon will have to figure out when he rights the script, and I can't give an answer to that right now, especially without having seen Avengers 2 yet, but my point is that I think creating a giant cluster**** of a cast that could weigh the movie down sounds like a really bad solution to that potential problem.
Also, it sounds to me like a movie like you're describing would result in an ending climax where you have 30 characters all wailing on one guy, which sounds like it would be a pretty lousy action sequence. I'd much prefer a smaller group of characters finding a way to beat Thanos by out thinking him or doing something he wouldn't expect than a giant fan service-y orgy of violence.
Also I would think that Black Panther, Rhodey or even Falcon join the Avengers just so there can be some diversity on the team.
Either way, Doctor Strange is going to have his own movie.
Yeah he will. That doesn't bar him from being the guy who brings The Defenders together. Like, you can have the four Defenders' shows on their own. As each one goes on, doing their own thing, you get hints of a larger story that's going to pay off in the mini series. Then you get to the mini series and you have Dr. Strange bring these four guys together to battle this larger, supernatural threat. And then when his movie comes along it's all "Hey, wasn't that wizard guy really cool? Well, here's his backstory!"
I'm not saying Dr. Strange is a lock for the mini, I'm just saying it's doable and I think it'd be cool.
I think it depends on who they cast as Doctor Strange. They have to cast a guy who has no qualms about doing TV or Small Screen stuff.
We won't see Doctor Strange on the Defenders if they cast an actor who is only interested in doing movies.
There are a lot less of those than there used to be.

Explain to me how that current lineup as it's going to be constructed in Age of Ultron is going to defeat Thanos? Especially if he gains control of all of the Infinity Stones?
I am 100% certain that Dr Strange will be the unifying element for *mystical* world elements. Not street level heroism.
curious. We'll see. I don't want this to be done any kind of way. And besides, would ABC even give clearance for their characters to appear on a NetFlix series?
