I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they shift Ant-Man to 2016 and bring forward Dr. Strange or something to November/December 2015.

This whole project has seemed shaky since the beginning. 6-8 years of development, shifting scripts, an incongruence with the rest of the Marvel universe... Now that I think about it, this news shouldn't seem surprising.

Bleh. Bring on Panther or MM.

Is there enough time for something like that?

I don't know who they are going to get to direct this film besides Joe Cornish as Ant-Man seems like one of those characters that would need a passionate director who is a fan to do it justice otherwise it could be rubbish.
MS and Wright had 8 f***ing years to come to a consensus and NOW they suddenly have creative differences?
Must of been some underlying issues that finally came to a head.

The long development was because of Edgar. Ant-Man would of come out years ago if Edgar didn't keep putting the film on the back burner for other films.

Thor:TDW had problems outside of studio input. Besides, Marvel let Black and, apparently, Gunn have free reign making their movies for the studio. Whedon didn't seem to have any problems.

But yeah, there is something strange about this one.

Gunn and Feige clashed on minor issues but seem to get along.

James Gunn also talked about his working relationship with Marvel studios president Kevin Feige stating they clashed 'everday' on matters. But worry not, the pair actually got along very well: "The great thing about Kevin and me working together is that neither one of us have big egos about what we're doing," "I trust Kevin on a lot of big issues and I think he trusts me a lot when it comes to comedy and character stuff. It's a really fun and enlivening partnership."

The only way I'll be okay with this is if Joe Cornish is the director they hired. It's the only way this project can carry on and not suck.

For all we know it's Edgar's fault, don't go pointing fingers till we know more

no. **** them! this all depended on Edgar. they should have done what they had to; in keeping him around.

Yeah, the fact that everyone's so quick to judge Marvel kind of makes me want to play devil's advocate. Then again, I love Wright.

Maybe they're both at fault here? Unless we got some insider (and I'll bet there's an Apex Scoop Predator sniffing about for answers…) we won't know anything at all about it.

I'd imagine it was both parties' faults, but Edgar doesn't really strike me as a pain to work with so I'm sure there must have been a good reason... Wasn't there something about him being really behind schedule?

i wonder if Rudd knew this before going on SNL?

Someone posted a pic of Paul Rudd with his wife/assistant on the subway in NYC yesterday and they said they overheard him saying he was tired and had a meeting that morning. He also seemed to be in a rush to get somewhere.

I guess he could of attended a crisis meeting at Marvels New York offices or his agent about Ant Man.

Well this is just bizarre. Edgar Wright has been writing this movie longer than he's been alive. He started it back in the 60s. Surely Marvel should have known for a while that his creative vision would be different from theirs? Maybe Wright was insistent on not incorporating it properly into the MCU?

But maybe this could be a blessing in disguise. It was always Wright who has prevented Hank Pym from joining the MCU properly, and Feige has adhered to his vision all along. I wouldn't be upset if Michael Douglas also decided to leave the project, and Marvel recast Hank as a younger guy who is the same age as the rest of the Marvel actors. Maybe they could even make Rudd play Pym now?

In fact, it seems like Wright's movie should always have been a sequel or even a reboot, while the first movie should have concentrated on Pym. It's probably too late now to rewrite the script to make it about Pym, but they could always recast, unless of course they decided to delay the movie until 2016. But then, would they even make the movie now without Wright?

It almost seems as if Marvel has put all their eggs in one basket with Wright regarding this movie. It has all depended on him actually being part of this production, and not that they necessarily wanted to make this movie all along and just happened to find a suitable director. If they did want to make it, they could have done so years earlier, or even last year so that Pym could be in A:AOU. Instead, they had to wait for Wright, who isn't even part of this now anyway.

Posted this in the other thread too

Yes yes...the big news was Edgar's departure and now not knowing the fate of the film. Big to ME anyway.

Massive ****ing bummer. And a baffling one at that. I am so confused - what is real anymore?

Not a great source, but according to some guy on Reddit:
The word from people on the crew is Wright got booted for being REALLY behind schedule and being ineffective at righting the ship and getting it back on track. Production has been bleeding money for a month and Marvel got fed up with him and they lost their confidence in his ability to manage a production of this size.

What in the bloody blue ****? Matthew Vaughn isn't the only guy in Hollywood who pulls out early.

One thing for reals if there is any nugget of truth to that rumor… Disney may have wanted to boot Wright off the project if the movie was starting to blow through money. Hello Lone Ranger/John Carter. No matter who Wright is to the movie geek world.

There's one thing the studio wouldn't want to happen - an untested, absurd-on-paper property like Ant-Man to go over budget. Since the project was in development before Disney bought Marvel, they may not have been as forgiving for Wright's shifting pre-prod timelines as Marvel had so clearly been.

These are some wild circumstances. It's comparable to GdT leaving The Hobbit, but this was described as Wright's baby since Day 1. Maybe his perfectionism got the better of him in a studio where the TV directors and Troma-trained James Gunns of the world work in a notoriously quick, practical fashion?

Yeah. I'd love to know the story and hope desperately that someday we get some scoop about it (as well as how Marvel Studio/Feige operates), but I'm starting to think that "creative differences" is less the reason and this time, it was more about nuts-and-bolts business.

It just sucks that a lot of us got our hopes up for an Edgar Wright directed superhero movie. Would've been bananas.

Wright probably wanted to add some of that stuff that makes his movies awesome but not sell, and Marvel was like, 'uh, no, more blockbuster, less quirk' and Edgar was like 'but you said I could do what I wanted to do' and then Marvel was like 'we said you can take as long as you want, but we're not spending $150M, $250M after marketing, for "The best movie of 2015 that you didn't see!"

"...But... those are the only kinds of movies I make."

So, when will the site "Whatculture" create their list of replacements for Wright?
