Tim Burton on Batman Returns

" There are many parts of the first film i liked, but i have to say it was a little boring at times. usually the case with sequels is that they're like the first movie except everything gets jacked up a little. i didn't feel i could do that; i wanted to treat this like it was another batman movie altogether. it had a much smaller cast and i had a better time making it. i think it has more energy and i like the characters a lot more. Catwoman, penguin and chris walken's character- i love them all. people say that batman took a backseat in my movies, which i can understand, but i wanted to really explore all these characters so much. i actually think Michael Keaton stands out more because the villains are so out of control, whereas he's very controlled."

Wow, cool. It's nice to see what Burton has to say about his Bat-movies. If he has indeed done commentaries for the new DVDs, they should be interesting...

Yea...I only wish he could have kept going with the movies...i would have loved to see his take on the Ridler, Twoface, Poison Ivy, and Mr.Freeze...

Notes
There was heavy security surrounded The Penguin's makeup. Danny DeVito was forbidden to describe The Penguin's makeup to anyone, including his family.

Annette Bening was cast as Catwoman, but was replaced by Michelle Pfeiffer when she became pregnant with Warren Beatty's child.

Max Shreck was named after the actor Max Shreck that played the vampire in Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens.

The role of Max Shreck was originally written to be District Attorney Harvey Dent. The explosion at the end was only to scar Dent, which led to his becoming Two-Face in the third movie. Also, most of Shreck's plot points and political aspirations would make more sense if they came from a D.A. and not a department store owner.

After Selina smashes the "o" and "t" neon letters from the "Hello There" sign, it reads "Hell here".

The Penguin's line: "I am an animal. I am NOT a human being," is a spun on John Hurt's line: "I am not an animal! I am a human being! I am a man!" as John Merrick in The Elephant Man.

Selina's line "It's going to be a hot time in the cold town tonight" was uttered by The Joker in Batman when he electrocuted Antoine Rotelli.

The lines on the Catwoman's suit breaks up as she loses her "nine" lives.

The Penguin's parents are non others than Paul Reubens and Diane Salinger from Pee-wee's Big Adventure, also directed by Tim Burton.

Catwoman's "Tic-Cat-Toe" is, of course, a pun on the children's game "Tic-Tac-Toe".

Just before Max throws Selina through the window, the shadow from her glasses resembles her future Catwoman mask (see pic).

Director Trademark: the beginning credits sequence opens with the camera following something (the bassinet).

Director Trademark: opening with a quiet night time snowfall.

Director Trademark: misunderstood outcast (Batman and the Penguin).

Director Trademark: Christmas

Interesting notes, where did you get these notes?

the whole interaction scene between Bruce and Selina at the Ball is one of my faves of all time. from the moment he starts looking around for her to where she walks down the stairs, up to the revelation of their alter egos. everything was perfect.

Yeah...it was a great scene, they have awesome chemistry together and i think that song that is playing is face to face? good song if that was it...

Pfeiffer Keeps Her Claws From Catwoman Judd
28 January 2002 (WENN)
Michelle Pfeiffer has kept her claws drawn when discussing Ashley Judd's succession to the role of Catwoman in the new Batman spin-off movie. The sexy actress played the latex-suited bad-girl in 1992's Batman Returns, but - despite making herself available to reprise the role in the upcoming film based on the feline villain - Judd secured the lead instead. However, the 42-year-old claims her interest in the film ended when she found out Batman director Tim Burton would not be joining the project. She says, "Studios like change and there's always a new person playing Batman. Tim Burton isn't involved in the new Catwoman film and I wanted to do it with him. For me, it was really his vision that made it so special." But Pfeiffer graciously adds that Judd will do justice to the part - for which the 42-year-old famously donned a skin-tight catsuit - and even offers her some friendly advice to her fellow star. I think Ashley Judd will be great as Catwoman. But she should make sure the mask fits because it was squishing my face through half of the movie. I hope her outfit is a lot more comfortable than mine. All that latex is sort of itchy."
