Sigh, you do know how to read quotes right? I didn't say any of that in the bold text, that's a direct quote from Ward. He said he wasn't into bullying, or chasing guys in lower weight classes. But when his name kept being brought up, he wanted to know if they really wanted to fight or not. And if not, then stop mentioning him as a potential opponent. Simple.
Who's marketing him like that? Go to any website or read any article or watch any of his fights and you'll hear the same things. That he's not able to get people to fight him, or that he's the most feared man in boxing today, it's coming from all areas.
By the way, Floyd was fighting in relative obscurity for a good part of the 90's-early 2000s too, only diehards really followed his career at that point. He couldn't get big name fights either, until he started playing a character. Then he got Gatti, then the ball started rolling. Same thing with Hopkins. It only takes one or two big fights to get put on the map, Andre still has time to do that...
Because it doesn't go with his most feared image. It's only cool to bash Floyd for his perceived "scared" tactics of avoiding fights, it's not nearly as cool to see someone that's a "good guy" do the same thing.
ALL fighters, at one point in time, usually don't take a fight they probably should. I'm not knocking GGG for not getting in there with Ward, I'm not knocking him for saying he'd fight in all these weight classes and then not do it. I'm not even blaming him for the media, they're obviously thirsty for the next big thing, and whether it's Canelo, GGG or somebody else, they're determined to find it. But people just need to be consistent. You can't bash certain fighters for the same thing and then pretend what GGG is doing is something different.
