This might be considered off-topic, but I don't think it is since it's part of Superman's "look" (no pun intended... er, you'll see what I mean).

I've been out of touch with the comics for 15 years, but has anyone ever showed Superman's heat vision as anything other than red eyes, a red laser, or wavy "heat" lines? Because going with the idea that the hottest flames burn blue, as with stars, why don't Superman's eyes heat up bright blue when he uses his heat vision? The red is kind of off-putting, if you ask me (no one did), and I think glowing blue eyes would be a lot less menacing than red ones. Plus, it would be different and pretty cool.

Thoughts?

What does it look like? SUPERbaby! Kind of cute... in a weird way...

Lack or real world science knowledge by the authors, suspension of disbelief because it's a story?

Because in the world of superheroes, blue is usually assosiated with a freezing power.

Like freeze breath, Mr Freeze or Ice man.

I think that's an interesting idea. It depends on what you decide the "heat vision" actual is. Is it lasers? Is it radiation? I kinda like the way it was portrayed in Superman Returns, which seemed like focused radiation.

I'm curious how X-Ray will be portrayed or if they'll show him peering into other bands like radio or infrared.

I remember a little after the first crisis during the Byrne reboot a Green Lantern described his heat vision as "telekinetic agitation of molecules". This was when they were heavily hinting his powers were mostly psionic in nature.

The X-ray vision is always interesting, since that vision cannot literally be x-rays or he wouldn't see anything.

Yeah, they were trying to go with this idea that his eyes should just glow red and things should get hot instead of him shooting red beams from his eyes. But the classic heat vision is just much cooler looking.

The moment in Final Crisis when Superman flies in in a rage after Batman confronts Darkseid wouldn't have been nearly as effective if his eyes were just glowing red.

Yeah. I think the concept of his eyes glowing when he's angry just makes him seem too alien.

In terms of a quasi-plausible, technobabble “explanation” for Supes’ powers, “psionic” sorta works. The fact is, a mere amplification of normal abilities fails to address most of the stuff that Supes can do. Of course, “mind over matter” isn’t really an explanation either – it’s a restatement of the question. Essentially, it’s just a label that means “beyond known physics.” And that makes the powers covered under that label, conveniently (:cwink:), immune to scientific scrutiny or objection.

Unless they try to be smart to explain them. That where the troubles come

To be blue it would have to be at a temperature of over 30,000K and doing so in an open environment would be like a nuclear bomb going off as the nearby atmosphere, people and surrounding city would likely be ionised and possibly the air could literally ignite. A red beam shows a temperature of around 700-1000K, which would be much more manageable if you're trying to be plausible.

I'd certainly rather have Cavill in this suit than the SR suit.

He'd have pulled it off better than Routh, but it is what it is. A horrible plasticy cheap looking thing.

I think the new suit is going to look great in fight scenes, especially the way it enhances Henry's muscles, and the richness of the texture.

I wonder if on the behind the scenes footage we will almost undoubtedly get with the DVD/Blu Ray release of MOS, whether we might get to see the CR costume that Cavill was reported to have tested in?

If true, I would really (really) like to see that.

Here's a fun post from Ask Yahoo:

Superheroes are a strange breed, often doing things we mortals don't understand. Why does Superman wear his unmentionables on top of his clothes? Hey, man, who the heck knows! Why does Wonder Woman bother with an invisible jet? Why does the Hulk insist on sporting purple pants? Such questions plague us, and if we had the chance, we'd move to Tibet and ponder them for a year. But our time is limited, so let's set our sights on Superman's skivvies.
According to Superman through the Ages, several theories attempt to explain the origin of his peculiar costume. In a 1940 comic, Superman says he invented the costume himself from "cloth immune to the most powerful forces." (Look out, Tommy Hilfiger.) A few years later, it's revealed that Superman's adoptive mother constructed the outfit from blankets found wrapped around the infant when he landed on Earth.

More recent comics state that the costume "acquired its indestructibility...as the result of being transported from the planet Krypton." Well, OK, but why does the Man of Steel dress like an '80s aerobics instructor? If we had to hazard a guess, we'd say it's for aesthetics and nothing more. Without the red trunks, he'd look like a male ballerina in blue pantyhose. And not even Superman could pull

The Singer/Cavill suit looks bad. And by "bad" I mean not very good.

That post is completely true, and it's why the MOS costume looks ridiculous. It looks like something out of ballet:

Not interested in Superman's junk, sorry.

It's just gross.

That's cool, Kuro. We all know you have an underwear fetish. :cwink:

Trunkless is good...with trunk is also good.... donner's Supes, Singer's Supes, and Snyder's Supes are awesome... why don't you make your own movie and show us that you can make a good superman movie....
