So we apparently have our Gwen Stacy

Emma Stone has been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Spider-Man film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures.Stone has been tapped for the role of Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The casting continues an association between Sony Pictures Entertainment and the actress, who previously starred in Superbad, The House Bunny, and Zombieland, all for Columbia Pictures; she may currently be seen in Screen Gems’ hit comedy Easy A, and takes a cameo role in Screen Gems’ upcoming Friends with Benefits.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, “It’s been an incredible journey for us to watch Emma’s star rise as an actress. She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special on-screen spark that is perfect for this role. Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill.”

Webb added, “The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde.”

Emma Stone can currently be seen starring in Screen Gems’ hit comedy Easy A. Next year, she will star in Warner Bros.’ Crazy, Stupid, Love opposite Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and in The Help, the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel; she also takes a cameo role in Screen Gems’ Friends with Benefits and will voice a role in DreamWorks Animation’s comedy The Croods. Stone’s recent credits include Paperman, Zombieland, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, The House Bunny, The Rocker, and Superbad.

This sounds like the stupidest casting decision ever. Emma as Gwen when she seems a natural shoe in for MJ? How does she even seem remotely like Gwen, and while she's not the perfect MJ, she does seem far more suited to that character both physically and personality wise. Everyone will look at her and see MJ, possibly more so than the girl who is playing MJ.

What a waste.

I suppose Dianna will be MJ now? They've got this the wrong way round. The way this is turning out though, probably Mia will be MJ.

boo to this... I'm glad Gwen is confirmed, and Glad Emma is in the film.... but the 2 being as one? HELL TO THE NO. Emma comes off nothing as how ive ever pictured Gwen... nor does she look like her... maybe my mind would change if i saw her with her natural hair color... but still... she embodies too much of Mary Jane... WHY is sony doing it again? Kirsten woulda been a better Gwen then Mj, and Bryce Dallas Howard would have made a better Mj then Gwen....

I think considering the characters Stone has played and how she's naturally blonde, I think we're going to get the SSM version of Gwen, which I guess I can deal with.

But I'll give it a chance. We didn't see the audition video. And it's good to hear they have chemistry.

I can easily see those two together. Her and Esienberg had chemistry in Zombieland. It's kind of funny they're all connected under one Sony umbrella.

To those thinking MJ is out, I'm pretty sure it was confirmed both MJ and Gwen were in the movie and that it still takes place in high school.
Peter's allowed to have two high school crushes.

As for blonde Emma Stone, it's actually pretty hard to find. I found this one though.

Im just really confused lol. They had the perfect MJ. Since the reboot was announced I said that she would be the greatest MJ. I like her acting style I like her voice, everything about her screamed Emma to me.
But now shes Gwen. Funny world we live in

Yeah this is a BIG shock.

I was almost starting to warm up to the idea of Emma Stone as MJ.

I mean it wasn't ideal and I would have preffered Elena Satine but I could see how she could suit some versions of MJ.

But Gwen? You gotta be kidding me.

I could never in a million years imagine Gwen as a husky voiced tomboy.

Oh well. Maybe they will cast a supermodel chick as MJ after all.

How odd that her and Bryce Dallas Howard are both gonna be in The Help, lol.

As for Agron, imagining her with red hair and I definitely see her working as MJ.
