The Official Goku/Justin Chatwin Thread

well, i don't think that any ONE of the reasons or arguments we give for wanting him to look Asian warrant them excluding Caucasian or Hispanic actors from auditions, but i feel that when you pile all of those arguments on top of each other there's more of a case for Goku to be portrayed by an Asian than by a Caucasian.

if you don't agree then we'll just have to disagree and leave it for the race thread.

And although Sun Wukong / Goku did not look homosapien the story is influenced by Asian religion / culture. There is no Western influence in it all.

Maybe not in the legend, but the db universe seems to take place in a melting pot of the the world's cultures. Besides, I don't think Toriyama even really had DBZ in mind when he wrote DB. It just kind of progressed into that.

With regards Angelina were they born with those names or did she rename them to fit in with Hollywood? My point regarding Granpda Gohan and this film is that it doesn't make sense to give him a name that's going to draw attention to Goku and people starting to ask questions about him and his origin. I wonder if Chi-chi will ask questions or perhaps the wont bother addressing it in the film.

Dude, he's an old Asian hermit living in the mountains who finds a baby (presumably in a sPacepod) and adopts him. He's gonna name the kid whatever he wants and it will likely be something he thinks sounds nice or sentimental. He might not even know any western names. If I were in his shoes and I found, say, a black baby under those circustances, I doubt I'd give the kid an African name like Okonkwo or Chiwueze. I'd probably go with Drake or Ian or something.

yep, supersaiyans have green eyes

Oh for God's sake, let's just say teal!

But was the Superman influence from Dragonball or did it start in Dragonball Z?

I hope they don't even bother addressing the issue. I want Dragonball Earth to be so different from our Earth that a white guy can have an Asian name and no one even blinks.

With names like Chi Chi, Piccolo & Bulma, I don't think anybody will care much.

Why not got give the kid an African name? In your scenario both African names and Western names are common for black children so there would be no problem there.

In this film we have a rare scenario where a Caucasian is named Goku from early age. As he goes through high school I would expect at least one student to ask him "how did you get that name?", "where are your parent from?" etc.

Maybe he gets bullied because of this, who knows, but something like this would be enough to draw unecessary attention to him.

And this what I expect from the film.

For fans we are already know about the characters but for somebody watching Dragonball (from Fox's perspective) for the first time, they will think WTF!!?

I don't know about this. I think DB Earth is so removed from our Earth that what names people have wouldn't matter much to them. Like Ratcrawler said, everyone has weird names in Dragonball.

OMG you're right. I hope that at the last second, Fox decides to change their names to Alan and Beth and the like. You know, so the audience won't storm out of the theater in confusion. God forbid they have to put up with strange sounding names!

You're points are a bit contradictory, huzzah. You acknowledge the fact that (much to the audience's chagrin) the characters in this movie have funny sounding names, so why would it be so out there for a seemingly white kid to be named Goku? At the very worst, the scene would play out this way.

Random kid: Goku? What kind of name is that?

Goku: My Chinese grandfather gave me that name.

Random: That's ******ed! Hey, Sharpner and Erasa, let's make fun of this guy!

Besides, the audience already knows he's raised (possibly in isolation) by an old Chinese man, so it wouldn't seem as weird for us.

Hey, does anybody remember that white Hawaiian singer Hoku? She had a one hit wonder a few years back called another dumb blond? This thread reminds me of her.

My problem isn't that he doesn't look Asian. My problem is that this movie makes Goku look like a female waste product one might find in a drug store.

^*****ebag was too good enough to say?

There seems to be a hell of a lot more problems with Goku's character than him being white. I'd be happy with a black Goku if they got the frigging character right.

Just because a person has a name that isn't say, culturally accurate(?), that doesn't mean that they'll get bullied. As someone who just graduated from high school, I noticed that the older I got, the less people care. But what I did notice is that giving a child a name that is say, culturally accurate, can result in the child being bullied. I.e, my ex-girlfriend's name was Fulani, and the kids teased her about it until she was older, even though she was black. Wheras, other black kids had names like Briano and no one said anything. And no, black kids with Italian names isn't a common occurence.

there is also no point in argueing over something that cant be changed

now that just proves my point..you want to argue over the fact that there is no point arguing over the fact that goku is not asian..just because you dont like where this is going doesnt mean i'm going to argue with you for the fun of it.
even though there is nothing else to discuss:hehe:

I'm not trying to argue, but saying there's no point in arguing over something that can't be fixed is pointless. This is a discussion forum after all.

while i agree that his features make him look Goku-ish....that particular picture makes him look like a freak, hehe. gotta love fake smiles.

it has a point.
it is its own point.

i think you just contradicted yourself in an atempt to prove me wrong..which only proves my point. it's like saying the moon sucks because it doesnt rotate the way you want it to..pointless.
sure the whole race issue is touchy and it was once a valid arguement.
but that was before justin chatwin was locked to play goku.

thats what ive always said hes an alien..let it go.

the race debate is still a significant debate, but i also recognize that the discussion will not change the current movie......which is why i suggest keeping talk about Goku's race in the race thread.
