The Official Goku/Justin Chatwin Thread

I can tell you that Roshi, Chi Chi, and Yamcha had ASIAN specifically mentioned on their casting sides, where as Goku and Bulma just had specific age ranges and were opening the auditions to any race or ethnicity. Though it's obvious that Fox definitely wanted white actors for those roles. Not sure what was specified for Piccolo. Mai wasn't specifically meant to be asian, just "exotic looking".
Goku
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

Goku is considered uncool and unpopular at school, but he is in fact an extremely talented martial arts fighter who gets rigorous training from his grandfather, Gohan. After the death of his grandfather by the evil Lord Piccolo, Goku finds his destiny in his grandfather's dying request that he find Master Roshi and gather all seven Dragon Balls (of which he has one) in order to prevent Piccolo from succeeding in his desire to use the Dragon Balls to take over the world. Trained by Master Roshi, aided by Bulma and Yamcha, friends he meets along the way, Goku proves himself a formidable, almost undefeatable fighter. On many dangerous adventures to find the remaining Dragon Balls and thus save the world, Goku conquers physical and emotional challenges, ultimately saving the world but clearly impelled to spend his life searching for the Dragon Balls with his trusty companions. Lead.

...the only reason i kept the race discussion going is because there are some ignorant and intolerant posters that keep saying that Goku can't possibly be Asian. frankly, it's insulting...which is why you'll never find me saying that Goku can't possibly be white.

That's why I consider you one of my favourite posters, you are enlightened with a sense of pride, its quite admirable

yeah...like i said, i can't blame them. they had to be PC about it and let Asian actors at least think they had a chance.

thanx Avangarde, feelings are mutual!

I'm curious to know who else auditioned. Was Chatwin really the best choice or just the most well know of the people who auditioned?

For me, Marsters, Chow, Rossum, and Tamura are inspired choices.. yet Chatwin is so uninspiring. I want to hold out hope that everyone involved saw something in Chatwin that screamed Goku that we aren't seeing.

that's what i'm saying. my problem with Chatwin isn't that he's white....it's really two things. his acting in his previous films has been mediocre at best and he looks like a frikkin' p*$$y. Goku, even when he's in a happy mood, never looks like a wimp. Chatwin, on the other hand, SCREAMS "wimp" and "emo"....and it's not because he's skinny either. Keannu Reeves was skinny as hell in the Matrix movies but he still looked like he could kick some ass even when he wasn't wearing his Matrix duds. Chatwin, to me, just looks like the typical American teen who, when gets mad, looks like a little b*+ch.

i still can't believe out of the millions of young, aspiring actors out there, Chatwin is the best they could possibly find. there's always a possibility he could surprise me and do a great job as Goku, but if looks and his resume are anything to go by then i'll most likely end up still being disappointed with their choice.

Whether Goku was supposed to be Asian or not, you have to admit that Chatwin bears about as strong a resemblance to the character as you’re ever going to find in a white guy from Hollywood. Especially by the animation standards during the Piccolo Jr. Saga, at the end of Dragon Ball.

Some pictures, yes. Other it's a "Oh dear God NO!!!!".

Well, see, I think that's because we’ve seen what Goku can do, it makes him look different to us; stronger. It’s the fact that he looks so innocent and friendly at first glance that almost always prompts his enemies to underestimate him. We know he’s no weakling, but that’s because we’ve seen him in action. I couldn’t say he looks like a whimp, but he certainly doesn’t look like a rumbler when he’s relaxed and being himself.

Heh, well that's true. Hopefully these people are smart enough to capitalize on his Goku-esque angles and expressions.

Really wish they had left his hair alone.

Have to agree. I'd have been much more happy with something along the lines of this. His hair isn't flipping every which way quite so wildly, but I still see Goku.

well, if they're going strictly for a guy who looks like a real life anime character then Chatwin would fit the bill because of his humongoid eyes, but i don't think he looks like specifically like Goku so much as he looks like the typical anime character. regardless, if they cast Chatwin mostly because he looks like an anime character then i think it was a mistake. after all, Marsters, Chow Yun Fat, and especially Jamie Chung don't look like anime characters.

I agree that their exclusion of any particular race probably meant they were aiming for a white guy to play the role. However, had a really talented Asian guy auditioned, they would have likely given the role to said person instead. In other words, while preferring a white guy, they were probably open to non-whites getting the role if absolutely perfect.

Now I know where I found that sketch. Nathan posted it in the main DBZ thread a while back. He had the right idea about how to play Chatwin’s present appearance to its strengths in order to capture Goku’s look without going through a drastic re-imagining.

Hmmm...I think I'm starting to see it. You have a point there.

I still think this will be the movie that makes Chatwin a star

I have a strange feeling that in the future Zac Efron will be Future Trunks.

I actually thought he would have made a good Goku.

I'm deathly serious.

Zac Efron as Goku would have been one of the largest disappointments in the history of modern man!

The resemblance is uncanny! This makes me thankful that we have Justin Chatwin instead. :yay:

Yeah I have no problem at all with Justin Chatwin. :yay: I'm sure he will do a fantastic job as Goku!

I wouldn't have mind if they left Chatwin's hair long.

Kudos to that my friend! I Agree that Justin Chatwin Looks a lot more like Goku with his longer hair. Heck even with a medium cut hair he looks like Goku but from the Scene shots I've seen the hair looks a little to modern 90's looks to me.

Don't get me wrong, I think the hair cut Chatwin has now for the movie is fine. It's just I wouldn't have minded the long hair is all.

i am not kidding at all. If that happened, i would literally fly to hollywood, and beat the crap out of the casting director.

Then, i would fly to the shoot, and kill Zac Efron.

That. Would. Be. The. Worst. Thing. In. The. World.
