Goku is an alien...So it doesnt matter what race he is..I dont understand why some people think he should be played by an asian actor..I think Fox has a done a good job casting people for this film and they all look like they will fit their parts very well

i'm glad you like the current cast, i really am happy for you...but you won't understand if you don't open your mind or if you don't WANT to understand. you saying that there's no use in complaining or crying over spilled milk shows that you haven't read our posts thoroughly or with an open mind. star_chaser65 made a genuine effort to understand where i'm coming from. all you've done is basically try to shut us up.

I'm not crying about it. I expected the casting of a white American actor even when the Dragon Ball movie was way back in the rumor stages and I'm still excited about the movie. I however can accept the reasons for why Goku was cast the way he was.

I would have preferred a more faithful film adaptation of some of my favorite characters and appreciation of Japanese culture; but Chatwin will do if he buffs up some.

I'd also like to mention that The Departed, The Ring, The Grudge, and Dark Water were all Japanese movies that caught enough attention to be brought over seas but needed to be remade with American actors in order to sell them.

Justin have a similar look to Goku, and have some experience in acting, I understand that in honor to the culture that create the manga and anime, he could have been choose an Asian person, but no asian have a look similar to Goku, Chatwin have some apearence, only maybe need to get fit and bulk a little.

Not easy to find an asian that know english and can act, an Asian guy that can not act could ruin the movie, is just about find an actor that can play the part, I am sure they prove many guys before decide to go with Chatwin, and i am sure that many asian guys were competing for the rol, now lets give Chatwin a chance, mostly because is nothing left to do now, is not in our power to change nothing.

They at least give Chung (Chi chi), Joo (Yamcha) and Chow (Roshi) the rols so Fox is respecting the Asian culture, so is not like they are disrespecting asian people.

you mean to tell me that out of the BILLIONS of Asians on the entire Earth, NONE of them could possibly look like Goku? i find that very hard to believe. more prejudice i see...

you guys are like clones. you obviously aren't reading our posts, because if you guys were you wouldn't think that we're trying to change anything. all we're doing is discussing Goku's ethnicity. we prefer to think of Goku as Asian, but that doesn't mean we're going to start a petition or anything. please read our posts carefully before you go assuming stuff.

also, i'm tired of people telling us to just except it and move on. first of all, i accepted it the first day i heard about Chatwin being cast. second, you guys saying "get over it" and "move on"....YOU need to get over our opinions, YOU need to move on if you can't accept our opinions.

I have no problem with seeing him as an asian but fact is fact, many anime animators have said that they look to AMERICAN WHITE PEOPLE for inspiration in there characters and that is the reason for the wide eyes we see. I mean that is just common knowledge. Express your opinion all you want but Goku looks american and i bet if you polled it i would have the majority backing me up.

i don't really mind that chatwin's playing goku, but it's by no means perfect casting. changing goku's ethnicity is like changing superman's. they're both aliens, don't give me the "goku's an alien, he's not asian" crap. superman's an alien, but i think we can all agree he's white.

if the japanese people watch their superman(goku) be played by a white kid, they might be in disgust. can you imagine a japanese superman film with a japanese actor playing superman? it just wouldn't feel right.

I see what you people are saying, and I’m willing to accept your theories, because that’s all any of us really have are theories, but that is complete nonsense. You’re implying that someone of caucasian ethnicity can’t have black hair, slightly tanned skin, WEAR an orange martial-arts gi, be short, and NAMED Son Goku.

All of that is circumstantial evidence. A white(or asian) guy can wear a freaking orange corset and be named Squigleywink Humperdink.

I mentioned earlier, yes, Goku fits the description for a person of either asian or caucasian ethnicity. That’s what relegates us to factual/opinionated theories.

I can understand that, too. But you have to remember, it's not how the Japanese viewing public saw him, it's how Akira Toriyama saw him. Maybe he intended for Saiyans to resemble caucasians. As with everything, the buck stops with the creator. The character belonged to him, not the Japanese viewers.

For instance, no matter how much caucasian comic fans could want Storm to be white, it's just not going to happen, because that's not the way Len Wein designed her. And I can't imagine any fan that would want her to be white in the first place. It would destroy her character.

Now you're just being silly. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster intentionally created Superman to resemble a caucasian. In fact, Siegel specifically states that he designed the character's appearance around that of Shuster, his co-creator.

The Dragon Ball mythos is loosely based on both Journey to the West and Superman. Several things have been changed, and Goku is just as strongly based on Superman as he is on Sun Wukong. Again, asian or caucasian.

You can't keep going back to the name, because Goku is really an alien named Kakarot. Son Goku was a name given to him by a Japanese man. Of course it's going to be Japanese. I was saying earlier, that had Kal-El landed in Japan, he would've been named something like Kenji Kojima, instead of Clark Kent.

why have the main character be white for asian boys? why have a white kid as the main character while focusing on China? from my speculation, his intention was to make goku chinese. the only reason why he was an alien from another planet was to explain why he looked human, but had a tail, and was not fully monkey. that was just a weird coincidence with superman; i don't think he meant to do that. there is little to no western influence with dragon ball; he already did that with dr. slump.
