The Official Goku/Justin Chatwin Thread

Indeed. I wonder if he had a personal trainer outside of 87Eleven.
i doubt it. the picture of him with the kid makes his arm looks bigger, but this comparison makes it seem like he hasn't gained any muscle mass...

And just for a disclaimer, neither Dorky nor I are bashing Chatwin in any way, so please spare the same tired responses.
as much as i'd like to...no, i'm not bashing him. i try to keep my criticisms about him as logical and unbiased as possible, but i DO feel that, if he truly cared about the cartoons and the material, then he would've done enough research to come to the conclusion that he's totally wrong for Goku. Christian Bale was offered the role of James Bond before he was even approached for Batman but he had enough respect and knowledge of the character to know that he was way too young for the role. knowing your "role", imo, separates the good actors from the wanna-bes.

goku must look very innocent right?
a muscular goku at that years would look wrong IMO.

so no C Bale size.

If you watch the first season of DBZ Goku isnt huge at all...He does look bigger after his training with King Kai though..So Chatwin is the perfect size for Goku

From a logical standpoint, I'd agree that a martial-artist of Goku's stature should be much more fit, up with the ranks of Bruce Lee and Leroy Green. His physique doesn't come to close to meeting the criteria of an actual world-class fighter, but then neither did his anatomical animation during Dragon Ball.

It's as though the people on this film pick and choose what they want to keep closer to the real world, and what they want to leave more in fantasy, or closer to the anime/manga.

Taimak from 'the Last Dragon' did a great job at looking lean and muscular while still looking innocent. there's no reason a well built person can't look innocent. besides, you really think anyone going to any modern high school is going to be all that innocent?

once again...Chatwin doesn't look like he's been training in martial arts. anyone who's been training in martial arts for at least a year would at least look lean even if they're not cut or muscular. Chatwin looks straight skinny, hardly any muscles. that's why i said he looks like a skater more than anything.....so no, he's not the perfect size for Goku. you don't have to be HUGE to be muscular...just look at Bruce Lee.

anyway, i find it funny that everyone's so quick to defend them being faithful to Goku's BODY (less muscular when he was younger) but when it comes to things like his hair, being less faithful is perfectly okay.

glad you can see that he doesn't have a fighter's body but you bring up the earlier cartoons card like it holds water. for one, this is a movie...not the cartoon. the hardcore fans will watch Goku regardless of what he looks like but the general audience isn't going to want to watch a scrawny guy for 2 hours. regular people will compare Goku to the rest of the action stars today and if he's not as visually stimulating as them then they'll be hard pressed to believe he can kick someone's butt.

Ehh, I don't know, heh. The majority of audiences usually don't think that far ahead when they're being well entertained. If you take Superman for example(man, this guy's name sure does pop up pretty often), Christopher Reeve wasn't all that muscular in the original movies, he was just super strong as a result of his Kryptonian origin.

Once we(really it's more like "they" the general audience, because "we" already know) find out that Goku is an alien, the fact that he isn't super cut will become more sensible, because people will think "oh, he can whip anybody's backside because he's an alien with superhuman power."

It does take the focus slightly off of the martial-arts aspect and push the spotlight more onto the science-fiction element of the series, like DBZ did, but it's the only way they could explain an average-sized guy being practically the strongest fighter on Earth.

I would beg to differ. I've trained in martial arts for ten years now and do make it to the national finals/semis in my country on a regular basis but look like any regular person build-wise.

Actually, it isn't since they're merely pointing out that Chatwin matches Goku build-wise rather than insisting that Chatwin match Goku build-wise. In other words, it's an observation. The issue of his hair would be a matter of their opinion.

DorkyFresh is one of my negative people in the forum.. Nothing will ever satisfy him or her

Yoda wasnt visually stimulating...
appearance is always decieving in Dragon Ball z... nappa being vegeta's bich...

I don't think it's negative. Things would be pretty boring around here(albeit peaceful, heh) if everyone agreed with everyone else's opinion to the letter. Besides, I don't think anyone can say the film is going PERFECTLY. It's going very well so far(for me, anyway), but not perfect.

Oppositional views are only bad when voiced in an antagonistic manner. It's not what you say, it's how you say it. DF has been pretty civil for a fan in such opposition of how the movie is being handled.

I suppose some users haven't encountered posters like The Vile One to know what true uncivil negativity is. LOL

I've seen that guy in action. He knows how to clear out a thread(or spark a flamewar) faster than you can say Jack Robinson.

Christopher Reeve was still pretty built, especially for an actor in the late 70's. it wasn't until the 80's that the body builders like Arnold and Sly came around. even still, Reeve was undeniably handsome. Chatwin, on the other hand...not so much.

Once we(really it's more like "they" the general audience, because "we" already know) find out that Goku is an alien, the fact that he isn't super cut will become more sensible, because people will think "oh, he can whip anybody's backside because he's an alien with superhuman power."
uh....no. just because he's an alien doesn't mean he can be puny and still whoop someone's @$$. how would it look if Brandon Routh hadn't put on the weight that he did? it would look ridiculous because he'd be a skinny guy who can do amazing things. how many martial arts movies have you seen where the main character is a scrawny guy that can kick everyone's @$$? exactly....and out of those movies, how many were taken seriously? exactly...

It does take the focus slightly off of the martial-arts aspect and push the spotlight more onto the science-fiction element of the series, like DBZ did, but it's the only way they could explain an average-sized guy being practically the strongest fighter on Earth.
well, for one, Chatwin's not an average sized guy. if he were...i wouldn't be complaining about his build. for two, it doesn't put the focus on the sci fi element unless James Wong makes it that way and i seriously doubt he's going to go into detail to explain how a skinny alien can whoop on a bunch of Earthlings. there's simply no good or legitimate reason why Goku has to look so scrawny.

I would beg to differ. I've trained in martial arts for ten years now and do make it to the national finals/semis in my country on a regular basis but look like any regular person build-wise.
that may be true, but Chatwin doesn't look like the regular person....and i'd be willing to bet good money that you aren't as skinny as Chatwin.

Actually, it isn't since they're merely pointing out that Chatwin matches Goku build-wise rather than insisting that Chatwin match Goku build-wise. In other words, it's an observation. The issue of his hair would be a matter of their opinion.
actually...both are a matter of OPINIONS, but it seems most people here are willing to accept whatever James Wong does regardless of what it is. i make the case that Goku's hair should be more faithful and they say it's fine the way it is, but then i make the case that Goku doesn't have a martial artist's body and all of the sudden faithfulness plays an important role.

again... muscularity doesnt matter.

Gohan could send chuck norris flying with one finger... and he's a little 9yr old.

yeah you're right.....LotR, Batman Begins, Sin City, 300......those were TOTAL let downs....:whatever:

if all you're gonna do is talk about a poster instead of contribute to the conversation then, to put it bluntly, you can go f*** off...

Yoda wasnt visually stimulating...
appearance is always decieving in Dragon Ball z... nappa being vegeta's bich...
right....they spent millions of dollars and hours to create a character that wasn't visually stimulating. :whatever: Yoda wasn't muscular or powerful-looking, but he comes from a universe that's, for the most part, fantasy. on the other hand, James Wong, grounded the movie in a semi-realistic world. not to mention Yoda never was portrayed as a muscular character. Goku, on the other hand, had at least SOME muscles even in the earlier cartoons while Chatwin barely has any...

:wow: okay........comparing a fictional character to a real person, yeah......great argument! if you're not going to take my posts seriously then i'll return the favor.

this IS a fantasy world... it has aliens, flying humans, fireballs...
Goku was never really portrayed as a muscular charater either, nappa was however.

fine... Gohan could beat up Hercule with a finger

thanx guys...i figured anyone who's seen my Goku drawing would understand that i'm not here just to spread negativity and that i DO understand how Goku should be portrayed. i seriously doubt if live action Goku ended up looking like my drawing anyone would be opposed to it......but that's just me.

it IS a fantasy world, but it's also semi-realistic. you can't say that Goku going to high school is part of the FANTASTICAL element from the series.

Goku was never really portrayed as a muscular charater either, nappa was however.
Goku has been muscular since the beginning of DBZ, not to mention....as i said, this is the MOVIE. given that it takes place in a semi-realistic world, it would make MORE sense for Goku to have at least SOME muscles since he's supposed to have been practicing martial arts for a while. your body doesn't stay the same once you take up ANY sport....ESPECIALLY martial arts.

right now, you're just making up excuses and defending Chatwin for not looking how Goku is supposed to look. plain and simple. i guarantee you that if he had more time to bulk up, none of you would be complaining that he's not skinny anymore.
