The Official Mass Effect Thread

Yeah, that is true. But that was due to what that particular story was doing. Now that they've done Shepherd/Shepard's story, who needed to be a human, I think the next batch of games would do well to expand the character selection. The universe is too rich in Mass Effect for it all to be contained to a single perspective. At least that's how I see it. And as far as the protagonist being a blank slate, for me that's just the trade off for having such robust customization. It would be nice if the backstory was more concrete but I find that the personality and depth comes through due to the actual gameplay, i.e. the choices you make. The character's a true avatar in that sense; more a representation of the player than anything else.
But this is why Mass Effect, even with the failings of 3, easily had the best story from Bioware imo.

I don't disagree with that, but I still think should go with something different and wider in scope with the next game.

Is it wider scope though? It actually feels limiting to me. Instead of having a fully fleshed out idea and character, with specific relationships. You get a lot of "fits all sizes" scenarios. Very bland, at least imo.

I guess I don't mind multiple protagonists as long as it's like, 3 main characters and then there is the main character, if you know what I'm saying.

I loved it in GTA V,didn't felt limited at all and I enjoyed a varity of three different characters at once

I haven't liked a GTA since Vice City.. and even then I didn't complete it. I fell off the GTA train a LONG time ago. Don't ever plan on getting back on. Tried V and I was just like "Yup, same old GTA. New coat of paint."

I'm not really a GTA fan but I liked having the 3 different characters for variety, mainly because I don't have any emotional connection with them. For Mass Effect the story was about Shepard's journey for me to the extent that I didn't customise anything at all about his appearance. Of course I'm happy that the option's there for people who want to be able to do it. I prefer to customise when the character themselves aren't as important, like in Skyrim for eg.

The structure of GTAV worked for me, but it is the world of GTA that allowed for it imo. Plus the fantastic writing for two of the three characters.

perhaps gta just isn't your cup of tea?

or, what exactly would you look for in a gta game for you to like it?

i think it was more about shepard's struggle, not journey. it was almost apocalyptic what the reapers were doing to the galaxy during Me3.

i hated trevor. i think the ending should've had the option of killing or sparing trevor only. not michael.

That's why I said 'for me', but anyway most journeys involve overcoming struggle to make them worth writing about rather than standard suburban bliss.

word man. i'm sure that's how it was for a whole lot of people playing mass effect.

speaking of which, i always wonder... how many of the hardcore ME fans are on playstation because I really think it is a minority. the vast majority is definitely on xbox.

Hard to tell from here as most people seemed to have the 360 early doors and got a PS3 later.

I had both consoles last gen and after the first game being an exclusive,I just got 2&3 on 360 too

it's much deeper than that

ME was consolably exclusive to 360 for a very long time. playstation didn't get access to the full trilogy until almost a year after the final installment of it.

That's the reason I said the above. Because most people had a 360 here it's difficult to tell just based on this forum whether the more hardcore ME guys are from PS3 or 360 as most of the PS3 guys here had a 360 early on and played Mass Effect on it anyway.

oh I didn't mean here on shh, i meant the entire gaming population.

yeah, there's not really any way of telling here unless we attach a poll to this thread asking on which system everyone played the trilogy. which is actually.. not such a bad idea

I knew YOU meant that. I was making a point about here, which is why I put here in the reply.

I guess a lot of people have left the Hype games forum but back when the generation started hardly anyone had a PS3. I hardly posted as it was pretty much ridiculed to own one! Most games tend to develop their more hardcore fanbases from where they first launch (like you've said before). I wonder how TitanFall 2 will be received on PS4.

I got ME 2 and 3 on PS3. Played the hell out of them. I never got around to getting the trilogy collection because everyone I talked to said it was almost unplayable compared to the late installments.

After ME3, I still played ME1. Still highly playable in my opinion.

I would love if they smoothened out some of the clunkiness of ME1 in a remaster as it does quite a few things better than the other 2 games. Absolutely love the beginning of the game and it has the best villain (one of my favourite in games overall). I like the RPG style too but would prefer many gameplay elements upgraded to ME2 & 3 level.

As long as they don't touch how all the perks work. I destroyed everyone and everything with my handgun.
