The Official Michael Shannon IS General Zod - Part 1

How big of a development is this really, its obvious Bryan Singer was going to leave in Zod for the sequel to Superman Returns.

Please lets not EVER talk about SR in this forum. The less it is said about that crapfest, the better! Who gives a crap about what Singer was going to do? The fact is that he almost destroyed Superman's chances in the theaters because of his Donner/ Devil Wears Prada fetish.

As far as movies go...because audiences enjoy the scope and impact of Super-action and heroism they're watching in front of them. You can preach and extoll his character until the cows come home, but if it's still going to end up being the same ol' Superman again....

That's why I felt they should start with Superman's introduction to the world as a mysterious phenomenon, then let our insight into his past/character unfold as we go along. Let the audience know right off the bat that this isn't the same ol' Superman, and then they'll be that much more interested and invested in finding out more about him....rather than having to sit through his walk down memory lane for 20 minutes before getting to the good stuff.

The key difference should be that becoming Superman is his choice, not some pre-ordained destiny or what have you. It should reflect more on Jon and Marta Kent's upbringing of him, not a genetic disposition or some otherworldly heritage that he never experienced. So no more floating Jor-El ghost and all.

I agree with some of this.lol

I would like to see more of the world's reaction in a in depth way as to how they perceive about Superman's presence on the planet and how certain countries or even cultures, perceive him as. I mean for me, Superman shouldn't just be another comic book hero, he should really be presented as a larger than life persona that Clark Kent had created.

And I do agree that becoming Superman shouldn't be a preordained thing that anyone should be telling Clark Kent about. He should come to that conclusion on his own based on as you said from the lessons and morals that he learned from his parents.

And truth be told, I honestly wonder if this version of Clark will have any idea as to how big of a character Superman will be when he decides to create it and whether he'll be surprised by how large of a response he gets.

I agree to a point on this. His real enemy and "final battle" was against a big piece of land. I like the movie as I like most Superman things but that part was incredibly underwhelming.

I think I remember watching the Teen Choice awards from 07, and when it came to best fight category, they actually listed Superman vs....

wait for it....

THE PLANE....lol

"It's like I'm on acid".

:) That should be an interesting performance.

This is the first time I hear Michael Shannon as himself. He's got an interesting accent. Any way, he sounds like a regular guy but I like that. The ones who play really intense roles always seem to be kind of chill in real life.

Hard to believe that the KKK member who's ear got shot off by Will Smith and Martin Lawerence and locked inside a car by them during a car chase for Bad Boys 2 is going to be the guy that plays General Zod huh folks?lol

Superman and Zod... defeated by the air conditioning! LOL :p

Zod will not be the only villain in this movie (and I am not referring to Luthor or the other Kyrptonian villains.)

Braniac please and I'm sure Intergang will still be involved as well.

Who you thinking Raybia? Braniac or perhaps the Eradicator?

Okay I'm not going to bother quoting all of you:

- To be fair, he kicked that planes a** and that was a gorgeous scene.

- That acid thing was funny; I was actually picturing him sitting in this living room where the walls are windows and he can see all this stuff.

- I don't think I could contain myself if I was sitting in the room listening to Snyder explain it. That is something that actors/tresses seem to have a natural understanding of. Me, I'd be going bananas about it. Shannon, he's just listening to a story about a guy he's going to play for his next job.

- An interesting accent indeed. He's from both Kentucky and Chicago. I don't really hear either in there so maybe its just a combo of both developed over his younger years (which I'm familiar with. Have lived overseas, in VA, KY, TX, MI, and IN so I'm a blender myself)

It's kind of funny on how Shannon just nonchalantly says:

"I think this guy will be alright" when talking about Henry.lol

And for a moment, I thought the guy standing next to Shannon was Zack himself since they look and hell, even sound alike.lol

"start the scene where you're a lil' bit nicer!" hehe

if Snyder actually requested something like that it makes me thing that Zod isn't going to be as obviously villainous as he was played by Stamp. that's a good thing...

Well villains who aren't one dimensional is always a welcome for me, just as long as you don't have it appeared where the villain is only a villain due to circumstances alone.

I've always been a firm believer that no matter what life throws at you and no matter how much you're influenced by others, it's still up to you and in your will power to choose to your own path in life. Your experiences just help influence as to which path you may take.

Heck, even with Heath's Joker in TDK, as chaotic and sadistic as he was, he didn't come off as a one dimensional villain for me. One of the things that i liked about him was that he didn't want to kill batman out of everyone that he had come across because Batman was the only real challenge for him left in the world. Without him, then he wouldn't be able to have his sense of 'fun' in the world, as sadistic as it is for him.

Heck, I've read several DC comic book writers stating that Zod is a type of character who wants the best for his race but because he has such a misguided view towards the concept and how to go about achieving it that he ends up hurting his cause instead of helping it.

Why is Zod not affected by Kryptonite? He's a Kryptonian!

"Why do you say these things when you know I will kill you for it...?"

...needs to be said 'nicely' to be effective. ;)

yeah..more dimensions so Zod is definitely welcomed, and so many people keep saying "they've done Zod...we know what he's like!"

anyway, i'm wondering if WB is gonna get on Shannon for this. it seems like Shannon isn't quite aware how fanatic people can be and how comic book fans can scrutinize his words. it's the day after he was announced and he's already talking about the casting process nonchalantly.

Is it me, or does a the possible storyline we could be getting in Man of Steel sound sort of like what Mike Dougherty wanted to do with a Superman Returns sequel?

http://www.moviehole.net/201033129-what-would-doughertys-superman-sequel-have-been

Yup.

I think Zod will start out as a good guy and there will be a lot of political intrigue and military tactics that drives him on an opposing side than Superman.

Sounds like a Nolan script.

I hope war and politics is a big part of this film. Zod being cast and the coup in Africa gives me hope.

Zod starting out as a good guy, sounds like a Marvelized version to me. Faking that he is a good guy with other motives? A little more DC style imo.

Just imagine seing Cavill in a supermodernized suit looking all 2012-like and then hearing Williams' joyful 70's theme on top. The theme would be so malplaced it's not even funny and it would just ridicule itself completely. No thanx to that scenario. The theme was also buried with Reeve IMO.

Yeah, the John Williams theme is over.

It was iconic, just like Burton's Batman theme, BUT it's time is over. Just like for Batman.

I'm confident we'll get a new modern Superman theme, which probably won't be so regal and over the top.

They will use the celebrity apprentice theme for this Superman film.
