Yeah, the time line for the movies is a bit iffy to say the least. There's no clear start and end point, though the storyline is solid.

Around the World Roundup: 'At World's End' Massive in Beginning
With $251 million from a record 17,500 screens in its global 102-territory-launch, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End delivered one of the highest-grossing foreign debuts on record. Through Sunday, the traditional cut-off for foreign openings, it grossed $216 million, second only to Spider-Man 3's $230.5 million start.
At World's End opened better than predecessor Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in some markets and worse in others, and its debut points to a final tally well over $500 million. The $251 million tally included Monday figures for all nations despite the fact that only the United Kingdom had a box office-boosting holiday, muddling comparisons with past movies. In most markets, At World's End opened anywhere from one to three days before the traditional weekend frame, although it has yet to reach India (June 1) or China (June 10).
Over the traditional three-day weekend in the U.K., At World's End edged past Dead Man's Chest with $26.6 million from 552 sites. In Germany, its $21.7 million opening from 954 screens topped Dead Man's Chest's $17.3 million. The franchise also picked up another $723,991 from the re-release of the first two Pirates movies in Germany, one of the few remaining markets that often widely re-release movies. In France, though, At World's End fared worse than its predecessor with a still impressive $17.8 million from 738 screens.
At World's End claimed opening weekend records in several markets. In Russia, it grabbed a stunning $18.4 million, which sent Shrek the Third tumbling 71 percent in its second weekend. At World's End also toppled Spain's record with $13.3 million from 827 screens.
In South Korea, At World's End nearly tripled the launch of Dead Man's Chest, securing the highest opening ever for a non-local picture there. Japan was high as well with $15.9 million from 881 screens along with Australia's $9.9 million, which was the fourth largest opening ever. I don't really understand why people didn't like Pirates 3. The only glaring problems I had with it involved the treatment of Keira Knightley. The amount of power she eventually recieves is just unrealistic. It's a definite case of applying modern views of suffrage to what is clearly supposed to be a period piece.
As for the rest of the movie, it had everything I wanted, and kept a lot of excellent secrets that I didn't orignally see coming. Yes, there was a lot of talking compared to the last movie, which attempted to string action scene after action scene together in a desperate attempt to form a coherent narrative. Not that it didn't achieve one, but it wasn't as strong as in the new film. In any case, I felt the story was wrapped up and the hinting at yet another sequel was done believably, even if I'd rather not see one. The tale is told, and it's been told well.
It seems more than a few reviews talk about how long the movie is. Yeah, that's a valid complaint if you're going to take your kids, but honestly, this is not a kids' movie, regardless of it's merchandising. If you're going to pay $6 minimum for your ticket, why would you only want to see a 90-minute movie? It makes me think people are desperate to find faults with it, even if they're reasoning has not been thought out very well, just to feel better about themselves. I thought people grew out of that in high school, but whatever. In any case, it was a hell of a movie with some female problems, and if they happen to make a fourth one, I'll be there.

Oh Hans is amazing, I think I like DMC soundtrack the best.
You know my Aunt is so dum lol I saw the film with her and you know what she said to me half way though ' They should make this film into a ride' - lmao lol I was like oh my god you've been to Disney land both Paris and Orlando and been on the ride itself lol.
Jeez some people are just funny lol. But after she was like 'oh yeah' lol.

I've only seen DMC once, I need to see it again before I decide which is the better sequel, but The original is easily the best.

Seen Worlds end today,and my verdict is: 
It was like a 3hour bore fest imo. It was just sooo slow of a movie the fun factor was just not there.
I really didn't care for the 'little jacks' or his concious it wasn't that amusing to me. I think if they would of cut close to an hour from movie it would of been better.
It was really disappointing to me as the trailers looked really good,and the only thing to me that was good was what was in the trailer. End battle scene around the whirlpool was really good.
so, original Pirates was and still is the best then /gulp then P2, then P3..

So what happened to Elizabeth in the long run? Where does she belong? Did she give birth in the wilderness or happen to stumble across hospital!

Saw the movie tonight. Really liked it, very epic. Loved Tia Dalma's scenes with Jones and her character in general. Barbossa was brilliant and so was Sao Feng. I also liked the somber ending with Will and Elizabeth.
It was very long though, a bit too long for my liking. It was quite confusing at times too, watching everyone betray everyone but that was also fun, trying to figure out where allegiences lay. I didn't really like the way they blatantly set up another film/trilogy at the end with Jack though.
This movie is definitely not a movie for kiddies though, the opening scene is very dark and melodramatic and certain death scenes are very gruesome.

I watched DMC last night and I think I now can pinpoint why I prefer it over AWE.
AWE, for the most part, doesn't really get into gear until the final 3rd of movie when we finally see the Pearl take on the Dutchman. But prior to that, all we get is nothing but exposition and shady dealings among pirates, Will and the East India Trading Company...nothing but talk, talk, talk, talk, talk.
Jack's rescue for example, something I had been building up in my mind for a year, was a huge letdown as in the long scope of things, the rescue didn't seem that difficult...I expected the Pearl to go through hell to get to Davey Jones Locker--facing new monsters, undead, etc. especially with the way they built it up in DMC...but with the exception of the cold and the waterfall...it was pretty much a smooth sailing rescue.
And after that, we get Jack and Barbossa and crew TALKING about what to do. Then Will goes and TALKS to Beckett and Davey, Elizabeth TALKS to Seo Feng, Tia Dalma TALKS to Davey Jones, then in the end of all things, they all get together and TALK with the other Pirate Lords thus building up to a final confrontation which they also TALK before officially getting started. Granted we did that that intro fight scene in Singapore, but it really wasn't much.
DMC had a lot more variety with their scenes with the Cannibals, The pseudo fight with Will and the Dutchman (intro of Davey), The Kraken against that ship after Will escaped, the bar brawl on Tortuga, The 3-way sword fight on the island, the Elizabeth, Pintell and Righetti team up, then the Kraken again. There was much more variety in DMC and kept me in the movie...
I'm not saying I didn't like AWE because I did...it was a GOOD conclusion to the trilogy and the final battle was AWESOME. I'm just saying that, if given a choice, I prefer DMC and don't really understand all the hate for what I believe is a much more entertaining movie.
--On a side note about AWE, I really think they missed an opportunity by killing off the Kraken. It should have played a part in the movie...

Then theres a shot of Elizabeth and her son standing at the cliff watching the Dutchman come closer to the island.

I don't agree with that at all. They were always developing Elizabeth as a strong character. She knew all about pirates as a kid, when she was caught by Barbossa's crew in CotBP she knew the history of parlay and handled herself well with the pirates. She was even giving decent orders on the Interceptor when they were trying to escape the Black Pearl, and burning the rum to leave smoke signals so they could be found. During DMC, she explains that Will had taught her to use sword, so by then she knew how to fight.
I liked that she was such a strong character in AWE, rather than some weak damsel-in-distress who gets kidnapped by pirates all the time.
