'Pirates' ship-shape overseas
'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' topped $51 million to win its third weekend at the foreign wickets.

The buccaneers stayed on course in a robust frame at the international box office, as "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" sailed to its third weekend victory with $51.3 million at 17,500 playdates in 103 markets.
Disney's pirates fended off their first serious challenges as Warner Bros.' "Ocean's Thirteen" opened solidly with $28 million from 4,200 in 30 markets -- including 20 first-place finishes -- and Paramount's "Shrek the Third" grabbed serious green in its first major expansion with $25 million at 1,852 in 25 territories, setting several records.

And with the sixth frame of Sony's "Spider-Man 3" ensnaring $7 million at 6,205, the frame underlined the dominance of the third versions of mega-tentpoles in foreign markets -- where studios take in 60%-70% of their worldwide grosses on high-profile fare. The third "Pirates" pic and "Spider-Man 3" have already combined for more than $1 billion overseas; the two franchises have now combined for nearly $3 billion in foreign grosses.

Overall foreign biz posted socko results compared with the year-ago frame, when soccer's World Cup launch chilled international moviegoing as the fourth frame of "The Da Vinci Code" led with $22 million.

For the second weekend in a row, "At World's End" declined by 50% on the foreign front as it again showed more traction internationally than domestically. It held best in Latin America, with a 42% slide, and in Asia at 44%, while Europe slid a steeper 57% amid direct competition from "Ocean's Thirteen."

The third "Pirates" should become the 15th film to cross the $500 million mark for international grosses today or Tuesday. And with combined domestic and foreign box office nearing $750 million, pic's on target to join 17 others with worldwide grosses topping $800 million by the end of next weekend -- even with more serious competition via the worldwide launch of Fox's "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer."

"At World's End" performed best by far in Japan, where it remained unchallenged by other tentpoles. It saw a decline of only 26% to $9 million at 871, lifting that market's cume past $50 million. It finished a sturdy second in the U.K., 21% behind "Ocean's Thirteen" with a 56% drop to $4.7 million at 552 for a Brit cume of almost $67 million; and in France, free of competish from "Ocean's Thirteen," the buccaneer biz fell only 29% to $3.9 million at 783.

"At World's End" finished behind "Ocean's Thirteen" in Germany with a 59% decline to $3.3 million at 1,568 and took in more than $2 million in Mexico, Australia and South Korea, where the pirates' cume has hit $30.7 million -- a record for a Hollywood pic. In Russia, the pirates' $1.5 million lifted the territorial total to $28.7 million, topping "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" as the highest U.S. grosser ever.

Third "Pirates" pic is less than $150 million behind the final foreign cume of $642 million for "Dead Man's Chest" and will receive one more boost Tuesday when it opens in China, its final market. It's already topped its predecessor in Mexico with $21 million, in Brazil with $12.8 million, in Hong Kong with $4.9 million, in India with $4.1 million and in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

'Pirates' tops felons at international boxoffice

Walt Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" weathered intensified international competition during the weekend, maintaining its lock on the No. 1 spot for the third consecutive stanza with an estimated $51.3 million from 17,500 screens in 103 territories.

After two unthreatened weeks overseas, "At World's End" had to contend with the opening of Warner Bros. International's "Ocean's Thirteen," which tallied an estimated $28 million at about 4,200 screens in 30 markets.

Bowing day-and-date with its No. 1 domestic debut, the third in director Steven Soderbergh's Las Vegas caper series, co-starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, already has grossed $65.1 million worldwide.

"At World's End" also had to counter the expanded rollout (in 14 new territories) of DreamWorks/Paramount Pictures International's "Shrek the Third," which nabbed an estimated $25 million from 1,852 screens in 23 markets. Its overseas total is $54.5 million; worldwide, its cume is $336.4 million.

Meanwhile, "At World's End" has rolled up $493.5 million internationally in three weekends, surpassing 2005's "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" ($493.2 million) as the 15th-biggest overseas boxoffice smash of all time. It already has exceeded the international tally of 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" by nearly $140 million, and is shy $149 million of the total take of last year's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."

"At World's End" should pass the half-billion-dollar mark internationally by today or Tuesday, according to distributor Buena Vista International. No other film has reached that benchmark so quickly.

"At World's End" now ranks No. 23 on the chart of all-time industry boxoffice hits worldwide with a gross of $747.1 million. It is the third most successful foreign release for Disney and the fourth-biggest worldwide grosser for the company (after "Dead Man's Chest," 2003's "Finding Nemo" and 1994's "The Lion King").

Japan was the biggest market for "At World's End," where the film ranked No. 1 with an estimated $9 million (down just 26% from the second weekend) at 871 screens, for a market cume of $50.5 million. In the U.K., "At World's End" placed No. 2 (after "Thirteen") with an estimated $4.7 million from 552 screens, for a cume of $66.8 million.

"At World's End" bows Tuesday in China, its last big overseas market.

after 22 weeks DMC had like 1.1 Billion dollars.
after 2.5 weeks, AWE is 250 million from 1 billion...wow. DMC opened July 7, closed dec 7(close to) so im assumin AWE would end around september/october...AWE might pass DMC on the all time chart...imagine 2 of of 3 Pirates over a billion dollars, its stunning.

CotBP topped out around 650 million...with very little hype compared to both sequels...

even if AWE tops out at 900 (i still think its gonna pass Spidey3) thats like 2.7 billion dollars in 3 movies.

Well Fantastic Four and Shrek 3 open in most territories this weekend. It's pretty exciting though, but theaters numbers will go way down this weekend.

Pirates 3 Reaches $747.1M.

Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End remained at #1 overseas for the third consecutive weekend with an estimated $51.3 million from 17,500 screens in 103 territories, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The third film in the "Pirates" franchise has earned $493.5 million internationally in three weekends, surpassing 2005's Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith ($493.2 million) as the 15th-biggest overseas blockbuster of all time. It already has exceeded the international tally of 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl by nearly $140 million, and is shy $149 million of the total take of last year's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

The film should pass the half-billion-dollar mark internationally by Monday or Tuesday, according to distributor Buena Vista International. No other film has reached that benchmark so quickly.

"At World's End" now ranks No. 23 on the chart of all-time worldwide list with a gross of $747.1 million. It is the third most successful foreign release for Disney and the fourth-biggest worldwide grosser for the company (after "Dead Man's Chest," 2003's Finding Nemo and 1994's The Lion King).

"Pirates" had to contend with the opening of Warner Bros. International's Ocean's Thirteen, which earned an estimated $28 million at about 4,200 screens in 30 markets. The third installment has already grossed $65.1 million worldwide since opening Friday.

"At World's End" also had to counter the expanded rollout (in 14 new territories) of DreamWorks/Paramount Pictures International's Shrek the Third, which nabbed an estimated $25 million from 1,852 screens in 23 markets. Its overseas total is $54.5 million; worldwide, its total is $336.4 million.

I wonder if AWE will reach a billion. That would be awesome.

im beginning to think it will...2 1/2 weeks out, already at 750...still has about 19 weeks in the theatres. plus opening in china...on average it needs about 13-14 million a week worldwide to break a billion. if it does 2 of the top 4 worldwide movies of all time are gonna be Pirates movies...AWEsome.

also...i expect a little bump in ticket sales this weekend...yes there are other movies out, but being Fathers day, and knowing my dad wants to go see Keith Richards, im assuming many more dads who are rolling stones fans will want to go too.

I liked the movie. It was OK. I expected a bit more and I'll post my comments on "Spoiler Mode" so I don't it for others.

I gave the movie a 7.5/10 and here's why:

*Sao Feng was killed way too quickly. I thought he was going to be all through the movie. There was no depth to the other pirates. I thought the writers were going to give a brief background for each. Their involvement in the final battle was zero. This was a great opportunity to expand the Pirates universe a bit more, but the writers missed it.

*The Kraken appears dead with no explanation how it died or who or what killed it.

*The conversation between Beckett and Jack was confusing. . . I totally missed what they wanted to accomplish for their own benefit.

*Tia Dalma's revelation as the goddess Calypso felt rushed. No explanation as to why she was "chained" or "trapped". There was no background to her as the goddess Calypso.

These are the negatives that made me rate Pirates 7.5/10. Maybe we'll get extra scenes or an extended cut with scenes that explain some gaps in the story. It was good but not great, IMHO.

I will definitely watch it again.

I missed the final scene after the credits. Can someone post it via spoilers? TIA

Saw it again for the second time, and like another poster wrote a few pages back: The film flows better the second time around. Still bummed about how little the Pirate Lords were used.

Final score: 8.5/10

lol Captiain Barbossa is a better Captain lol and it's his ship :cwink: lol.

they are different knd of captains. barbossa is more brutal and ruthless and he gains respect by fear. jack is a better navigator and he is better in getting himself out of troubles.

Well yeah they both have good points and bad, but overall I love them Both lol.

I want to see more of Captain Turner :woot:

hehe, first question that popped into my head =D

Jack Sparrow , be it known that you have for your willful commission of crimes against the crown. Said crimes being numerous in quantity and sinister in nature, the most egregious of these to be cited herewith – piracy, smuggling, impersonating an officer of the Spanish Royal Navy, impersonating a cleric of the Church of England, sailing under false colors, arson, kidnapping, looting, poaching, brigandage, pilfering, depravity, depredation, and general lawlessness. And for these crimes you have been sentenced to be, on this day, hung by the neck until dead. May God have mercy on your soul.

lol, I don't no what the purpose of that is, but I like it =D
I'm gonna explain all that with banter in my version of the script of Pirates 4 with my new character ladies. I forgot about this. I have to get the clarik thing in my script.
BW.
