I see everyon comparing Rings and Pirates to Star Wars but no one is comparing Harry Potter which i think is this era franchise and Pirates is like our versions Indiana Jones movies.

Harry Potter is not done and when it is it will be the second longest franchise next to 007.

To be fare Lord Of The Rings and Tolkien likely inspired Lucas for come on the fire planet looks like Mordor.
To say people have forgotten the Rings movies is unlikely. LOTR will be a part of film history as will Harry Potter , Spiderman and Pirates. As a continence of Lucas success for sure.
But i find it unlikely Rings, Pirates or Harry Potter will be forgtotten.

The Harry Potter movies rule, I would say the franchise is going in the direction of being the best out their, but since it isn't complete yet it is below Pirates, Indiana, Star Wars, Spider-man, and soon to be batman

To me, there is no movie akin to Star Wars.

However, I liken Potter to LOTR actually because they started off as successful books made into blockbuster movies.

People are forgetting that Star Wars has resent memory due tothe dvd releases and the prequel films. Rings, Pirates and Harry Potter are just released lets see what happens if in deed Pirates are done. We know there will be two more potter films and there is always The Hobbit.

Star Wars made these movies possible yes but i think they will be remembered like Star Wars was for us.
I think the saga films are in good hands that may have sprung form the Star Wars films but i think each Saga is good ane remembered in other ways. Not everyone likes Star Wars i know it is shocking.

Well you have a movie like Star Wars fully integrated into popular culture.

I'm not saying movies like LOTR, Potter or Pirates won't be remembered but Star Wars, through pop references, video games, books, tv etc. stay pretty fresh. Potter is having it's own amusment park, there are talks about the Hobbit and there are talks about Pirates 4, however only time will tell.

See I don't equate Star Wars, LOTR or Pirates as "interchangeable". Saying one would succeed in the other's stead is essentially saying they are pretty much the same movie.

yea i def see what your saying...it isnt going to get any farther then opinion and speculation... your exactly right, pirates could have BOMBED in the 70's.

Pirates, Indiana, Spider-man and batman arent complete yet either...i cant wait to see how much money HP7 is going to make...i have a feeling itll be the next billion breaker...2010 right?

I garantee you now that todays kids know more about what Harry Potter and Pirates is then Star Wars or Rings.

I want to say one thinng about Star Wars. George Lucas took things that inspired him to create this universe. I hope everyone remembers Star Wars was inspired by books and thing that Inspired Lucas. I think one book that we inspired Star Wars was The Arthur Legend.
Its unfair to compare Star Wars to other movies simply because its teh first movie to use Special effects so it will always be this juggernaut. However you will find many who believe Star Wars is not the greatest saga ever.
The crown would go to Bond if you ask a wide range of people.
I am not pciking a fight my point just is that Star Wars has reason ist genra breaking that the new sagas don't have.
The question best is. Is it the greatest saga ever becaus eit is good or is it history of a well market campaign and w ethink it the best thing since the Egg.

I guess my opinion is based on the fact we know where Potter is heading, and for those who haven't read it yet, lemme just tell you incredible chances for some of the most unreal magic lies ahead

I think you are right though 2010 I think it could be a billion dollar breaker

as do I think both another Pirates could too (this one is 50 million away and was released in one of the most crowded summers in recent history)

I get the feeling that Star Wars Episode I was only received as it was because it was Star Wars. Had the OT not been made, Episode I wouldn't have made nearly as much as it did.

Well back then, they didn't have the ad campaigns of today. No teaser trailer a year before the movie is released. 25 magazines with the movie on the cover. No internet. This was essentially word of mouth that captured a generation.

Yes, Star Wars isn't everyone's favorite but it's so integrated in our culture that you don't have to watch tv too long without being mentioned.

I think yes, it became popular because it brought a story while familiar in a way that's never been seen before. I think that's why it's so popular, while the special effects at that time were spectacular, the movie is so relatable from kids to adults with Lucas's borrowed themes.

It's been, what, two months. And I honestly forgot I even saw this movie.

Star Wars and LOTR comparisons, my ass. Take the blinders off people. This should never have been a franchise. A classic case of milking something without any substance to milk.

Curse of the Black Pearl is a terrific escapist film with a classic character to lead it through. Disney got greedy and tried to turn it into some epic Pirate adventure story, and while they got all the box office returns they could ever hope for, they also got a pair of films that no one is going to remember in five years. Reason being, there's little to nothing to take away from in these films besides Jack Sparrow and some pretty FX.

No one's going to be talking about how great Will's story was, or Elizabeth's story, or the "themes", or any of that. Overrated begins in ends with Pirates of the Caribbean.

Completely agree. This is discussed in the latest issue of Star Wars insider. It mentions how the first trailer for Star Wars wasn't even released until February and a few tie in comics released in March. There wasn't much hype before the release. But word of mouth got big, really big.

And fact is, back then there weren't many escapist films nor a lot of live action films that kids could enjoy. Movies like Godfather and Easy Rider were the big boys, and as great as they were, they weren't aimed at kids. Star Wars came along and changed everything. But funny how that is because I was reading an article the other day that blamed George Lucas for this, it said he made all of these big budget summer blockbusters possible and the industry no longer has many Godfathers or Easy Riders.

I bet who ever wrote that is just a tool for the AFI, jeeze, and I bet he thinks Citizen Kane is the best movie ever too...:whatever:, where do these guys come from

I think it is a good thing there aren't that many Godfathers, I am glad there are three and that is it, if every movie was eight hours long and featured Al Pacino not doing anything he doesn't normally do (oh wait thats Scarface...er, or is it Carlito's Way...?), I wouldn't be a fan of movies. The Godfather movies are really good in their own way, but entertainment value none, when is the last time anyone of you have been hanging out with friends and you all wanted to watch a godfather movie? I bet it never happens, and if it does it's not for the right reasons.

film was made for big budget filmmaking simple as that, godfather, armos perros, little miss sunshine, Citizen Kane-offer nothing a great novel can't completley destroy, but movies like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, transformers, pirates, harry potter, memento (i realize it isn't big budget, but it is the epitome of what a movie should be imo) offer us something no book can...literal magic against a backdrop of a great quest or adventure

I love love the Godfather movies. 1 and 2 actually, I've never watched all of 3. And honestly , I find they have high entertainment value. I'm enthralled with the story, character development, and dialogue.

I think the movie is interesting too

have you ever literally sat down with some friends and been like "hey man, lets watch a movie" they are like "yeah man" and you guys decided to watch Godfather...? It never happens, have you ever had the urge on your own, outside of just trying to be able to say you've seen the movies some people call the greatest movies ever, and wanted to watch them?

then ask yourself do you honestly think they are better movies than indiana jones, and star wars your favorite blockbusters, and you will have your answer as to why blockbusters are better movies than "best picture movies"

In terms of quality, I can say Godfather 1 and 2 are better than most films.

I think the best way to explain it, is I can stop on Godfather on TV and watch it. Another great example is Shawshank Redemption, anytime it's on.

And when I ever see lists of "Best Sequels", the only movie I am okay with being #1 over Empire Strikes Back is Godfather 2.

I'm probably in the rare camp on this one, but did anyone find their appreciation for the The Curse of the Black Pearl rise with the release of the sequels? And I don't mean you hated the sequels and it makes the original seem better.

I personally thought The Curse of the Black Pearl was enjoyable, but nothing great, but after seeing the superior sequels and going back and watching Black Pearl for the first time since, I'm loving it now. Yeah, I'm probably the only one.

Yep, I'm with you on that.

I think DMC is like a 8 and AWE like a 9, but I still think Curse is leagues better than both

but, and I don't know this, but maybe when I would normally think Curse is a 9 the greatness of the sequels made it a 10, I don't know but possibley
