eh, theres way to much to just 'cut it down'. i see where everyone wants it to be shorter and get straight to the action, but id much rather see the FULL stories. the action and FX are just +'s.
But that's what the extended cut is for...

There was at least 45 mins in King Kong they could have saved for the extended edition.

Thing is, the movies had a terrific concept. I thought the first very was very good, best Pirate movie ever, the last two seemed rushed and had too much of a flawed script. The script just pulled it down so much.

Cool performances, great visuals, awesome villains, great story, just a damn lackluster script with too many plot holes. Shame.

Maybe one day there will be a director's cut that trims part III down and has all the plot there.

It's always interesting to see "hindsight" reviews after the initial allure has worn off.

What are you suggesting? Reviews for At World's End were already mediocre. Are you expecting them to get worse...

Oh, I thought you meant heavyweight opinions that people take to. Like critics...

I know most people like to thumb their noses at critics, pretentious, out of touch etc. but more often than not the movies that have done exceedingly well at least the top 20 grossing movies have gotten reviews of above average or better.

To give Pirates some credit, it's probably the first film to do that exceedingly well besides mediocre reviews.

Alot of critic liked films aren't that great. Boring is a word and Pirates never was ment for an oscar award it was ment to be fun kinda like Star Wars back in the day.
The thing about Awards and Critics is i thaught they were changing after ROTK won for best Picture. I think a best Fiction award should be added.

Best fiction!?

Anyway, besides the mediocrity of the scripts, Depp was simply perfect as Capt Jack. That performance has already gone down in history.

Look at some of the top grossing films, Titanic, Star Wars, ET, LOTR, Spider-Man. Top grossing movies that got pretty good reviews. Yes, and I 'm aware originally that Star Wars had mixed reviews, however SW is an exception to movies that had people completely change their minds, days, months, years later.

And BW, most movies are fiction. :o

i already want potc 4 to come out.
i need more jack sparrow

In all fairness though we've seen where fan opinions on Titanic have gone...and few people think that movie is anything special anymore

ET has a place in pop-culture, but its an iffy one, like its there and we all acknowledge the fact it was a interesting movie at the time, but (imo) I think it has aged poorly, just my opinion on pop-culture

Spider-man people where ready to jump all over that at the sight of trouble with 3, when in all reality it is no where near as bad as some people make it out to be (much like, again imo the pirates sequels), not as good as the first two, but if that is the low point in a franchise, i'll take that anywhere

LOTR, time will tell, my personal analysis on how the franchise has settled into pop-culture is by the fact people are so ready to make fun of the "gayness" of sam and frodo....and then....not much after that, me at least I don't hear really anything in any form of popculture that allueds to LOTR (with the exception of Clerks 2 which pretty much did nothing but bash the flick: and gave it a sweet ending lol)

Star Wars, it is the exception, but lets say for instance if Pirates had been the first franchise to really blow people away with special effects, do you think the reviews might change with time?

The first Star Wars movie, yes opened with intially mixed reviews but it was so unique, and people loved it so much that imo (i wasn't there so i don't know for sure but this is really the only reason I can see for critics to completely change their opinion) the complete originality of it literally forced critics to change their opinions.

I guess I don't think critics opinions will change for Pirates, I do think fanbut I guess the question I pose to you is if Pirates where the first do you think that would be the one to have critics opinions change???

I don't know if it would or not I'm just saying Star Wars does put a ceiling on how high blockbusters are judged, so its not always Pirates gets a 7/10 its that it gets a 5/Star Wars

We are talking about 2 different things.

Critics opinions rarely change.

Fan opinions are more fickle.

And if you are asking if Pirates opened first would it have garnered the same interest/love of Star Wars? Honestly, no. Not because I'm not a Pirates fan but you could have not pulled that story 30 years ago with those special effects. Also, you'd be saying that Star Wars and Pirates are interchangable and call it bias but they are not.

Star Wars was a right place, right time.

Pirates at least DMC was a right place, right time, money wise.

In so many words, there will never be another Star Wars because that's just the way movies, society is now. I mean ILM started with Star Wars and now Pirates used ILM standing on the shoulders of what was. The ceiling has been broken. If we start doing holographic, physical reaction type 3D stuff? That might be a different story.

Fair points

I don't think Pirates and SW are interchangeable ether

My opinion on Pirates hasn't changed, isn't really going to either.

Great characters, great concept, poor execution on the latter films. Again, I can only hope a while from now that a director's cut of the last two films is released that actually have the movies make sense.

Pirates isn't as good as Star Wars, but I do prefer it over Lord of the Rings.

I'm wondering what the next big trilogy will be. Star Wars was science fiction/fantasty, Lord of the Rings fantasty, and Pirates of the Caribbean of the swashbuckling Pirates genre. We've pretty much covered all of the high end concepts lol. What will be next?

See, imo (we all love or hate these movies are going to have vastly differing opinions cause they are such monstorusly big movies)

The movies make perfect sense to me, I just think there is a lot of fat that fills the movies...I think the concept is awesome, the characters are awesome, the story is awesome, but in that story to stretch the movies out a bit there are a lot of unessecary film time on em. I think they could have conceivably made one 10/10 movie with the stuff they did in these two 7-8/10 movies

I would really like to see another single story movie, but it can lead into a sequel just not be dependent on one

I agree too, SW-PIRATE-LOTR

and then to answer your question, would Batman constitute as the next big franchise? Iron Man maybe? Prince of Persia? Transformers those are movies I could see being the next thing I dunno

You mentioned before the stuff that could have been cut down. But I would have added a Kraken sequence instead of the 2 sentence mention and showing it dead on shore, I would have gave Norrington a better ending or turning on the EITC at the end which brings me to my last addition, the whole battle at the end and actually use the Pirate brethren vs. EITC with Norrington as I said turning on EITC.

I just felt a some of it was lazy or "rushed" storytelling.

I would agree with your improvements on the story

Like if it where me, and they where like we want a two movie arch story, and this was the story I would have added the Karken, brethren court, Norrington turnning on the EITC, and Calypso in the final battle

but I think the other thing I would have done would make the Land of the Dead like a frightening place where they aren't sure what is real and isn't, I kind of think that was a waste, that could have lended for some cool visuals too

What I think would have worked best would be to just have combined the major storyline in both movies (Jack and Jones) and make one eye popping movie, cut the cannibal island down to just a meeting point, cut the brethren court down to mearly the scene in Jedi where Luke yells from across the hall "I'm with you too", maybe not even have Jack die in the karken just have him kill it from the inside and he cuts his way out or something and you can avoid the land of the dead all together

and have more sao feng

Definitely buying the DVD. I'm sorry, but I just loved all three movies. I weren't let down by them in the slightest.

I was let down by the 3rd because it felt like 90% of the movie was nothing but dialogue and negotioting among the characters...from Barbossa/Elizabeth negotiang with Feng, to Jack to Beckett to Will to Beckett to Elizabeth to Feng, to Jack, Will and Liz with the other Pirate Lords to Jack, Davey, Beckett and Will Liz and Barbossa--its like jeez...do something already!

And when we finally get to some action, it was kind of a let down...with Liz's speech and all the pirates I was expecting a real LOTR-eske battle of the seas, with all the pirate lords and royal fleets and what do I get? A showdown between two ships where in the end, the royal fleet just turns around and sails away...wth?

At least with DMC, we got into some action about 20 minutes in with the cannibal sequence--granted in hindsight it was unnecessary filler BUT...at least I got some action out of it and felt legitamely entertained. Watching AWE, almost felt like being in a lecture hall...having to take notes to remember who's on who's side and who's decieving who.

I would say the series got progressivly worst in terms of quality.

As for personal preference? Id probably rate them:
