The Dark Knight The Official Plot holes thread.

This may have been mentioned already, and it's not a major plot hole. In fact, it can be explained like many of the things posted in this thread - it may have simply occurred off camera. Right after Reese tries to black mail Fox, Bruce and Fox are working on the bullet casing figure print. Fox asks Bruce about the cell phone project for R&D, but makes no mention of Reese figuring out that Wayne is Batman. When Reese goes on Gotham Tonight with Mike Engel, it's almost as if Bruce is taken by surprise. Like I said, this may have happened off camera, so it's not really a plot hole. I loved the movie, and it didn't deter from my overall enjoyment, but I did notice it upon my first viewing.
Fox probably didn't want to trouble him, since he figures Bruce has more important things on his mind, especially when Fox thought he talked Reese down out of doing anything. :oldrazz:

Here's a plothole that is explainable but was glaring in the film.

Bruce goes to see Fox about getting gear to jump out of a plane. They discuss it. We even see Bruce with an oxygen mask such for jumping out of the plane when talking over his Hong Kong trip with Alfred. Then he jumps off a building instead.

I know the whole thing was that Hong Kong wouldn't let them fly a plane over the city at night (and yet it does when it picks up Lao and Batman....) so they had to alter it to the skyscraper, but I find it odd that they didn't do anything to fix the Fox/Wayne scene.

And how were two of the people Two-Face killed cops? He spared Ramirez. Unless their counting the cop the Joker shot at the hospital. But in that case one would have to include the cop's partner who was taken out by the Joker off camera.

[ian malcolm] so um are there going to be any actaul PLOTHOLES in this thread?[/ian malcolm]

I dont remember the scene with Fox happening the way you just described.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I remember Bruce asking Fox about ways to retrieve a person that was on the ground from the air.

Fox then went on about a military program for dropping and retrieving ground troops from an Airplane or helicopter.Fox even showed him some equipment.

Ok, not plotholes, but these are nitpicks. They don't ruin the movie at all for me, but after having seen it for a third time, they stood out.

1. Batman can pretty much sneak in and out of most places undetected, yet triggers a break-in alarm at Wayne Enterprises? I'm talking about the scene before Fox sees the sonar system, when the secretary informs him that there was a break-in at Wayne electronics. I don't think Batman would do it intentionally, as if he wanted Lucius to come down there, he would have just told him to.

2. How does Joker get bombs into the hospital and ferries without being noticed at all? This took major planning on his part, at least a few days in advance, and I'm sure someone would have noticed someone moving that much explosives into those places.

3. How is Joker the only one not affected by the explosion at MCU when he was standing next to everyone else?

4. If Harvey had flipped the burnt side when he put the gun to his head, how would he have flipped the coin for Gordon?

5. How did Batman get to the top of that tall skyscraper in Hong Kong? He was in his batsuit, so unless he just walked in past security with a bag carrying the suit, without being questioned at all...

6. Why would Alfred ask "How do you say 'Apply your suntan lotion'"? Wouldn't he want to apply the lotion on the girls if they asked?

I dont remember the scene with Fox happening the way you just described.

I remember. You see the oxygen mask when he's first talking to Lucius, and again when Wayne is talking to Alfred about hiring a plane. But you don't see it at all when he's in Hong Kong.

There are several things that would attract the federal governments attention and involvment spanning BB and TDK. It would seem it would be a little difficult for things to operate the way they did in or by the end of TDK from the attention caused by the below.

Microwave emitter designed for warefare going missing and then being used on civilians would attract military, FBI, possibly CIA since the league was international. Even if no one knew until after the fact, there would have been people sinffing around during TDK.

Weaponized halucinogens used on the population....again see above. This would also get environmental agencies involved, not to mention all the nature groups.

BB/TDK, someone in the military would have to notice the tumbler since it was designed for the military to bridge rivers. Even if they didn't contract for it...they would have had to see it to reject it. I assume the same could be said for the microwave emitter.

The FBI always gets involved in the investigation of bank roberies. This was going on in both BB and TDK and who know how much in between.

Buildings being blown to smitherines with explosives seems to attract lots of federal attention.

Gotham was threatend twice with terrorism now...I would think the place would be crawling with feds looking for answers.

I think there would be some agencies interested in Batmans/Waynes cell-sonar trick.

Or Batman didnt have the time to call Fox and figured that he would be the one to respond to the alarm.

You would hope someone would have noticed.

But even in the post 911 world there are people sneaking all kinds of bombs and weapons into restricted places.

Way back in my High School days me and a friend snuck 16 gallons of liquid laxative into my school's cafeteria and mixed it with all the fountain drink machines.

It took over a week to accomplish but it was worth it.The sight of the lines of teachers and students ****ting on them selfs waiting to get into the bathrooms was something I'll never forget.:wow:
3. How is Joker the only one not affected by the explosion at MCU when he was standing next to everyone else?

I'm sure that anyone else who may not have been hurt was ether in shock or a state of panic to worry about where the Joker went.

4. If Harvey had flipped the burnt side when he put the gun to his head, how would he have flipped the coin for Gordon?

What?????

TDK took place a year [or a bit more] after the first film.

I doubt that they would still be investigating a closed case.

Weaponized halucinogens used on the population....again see above. This would also get environmental agencies involved, not to mention all the nature groups..

Thats a good one.

Not unless it wasnt rejected by the military but by Wayne tech's own people.

I dont remember Fox specifilly stateing that it was rejected by the military....maybe Fox or other WTech designers felt that both projects werent good enough and scraped the prototypes before showing them to the military.

I got no answers for these.

If they find out about it.

At least Joker clearly says what's going to happen to the guy and you don't need mroe than that. but Lau was standing in the middle of a pile of money which caught fire. His death should've been acknowledged somehow given he was in the movie the same amount of time that Maroni and the Russian were.

Not really, I said goodbye to Lau when the Joker approached him in his jail cell, him being on the pile of money was an after thought.

What?????

If Harvey flipped the coin and it came up burnt side, he would have shot himself in the head. DEAD. So then how would he have flipped the coin for Gordon? He should have flipped for Gordon first, then himself.

I still think I dont get it.

Are you saying that he took a chance that he may end up dead before Gordan????

Yes. He can't kill Gordon's kid if he's dead.

I dont see why that would bother you?????

Its just a crazy guy acting crazy.

It was intended to be seen as an illogical act.

Just like a game of Russian Roulet.

He also wanted to talk to Fox in person, and staging the break-in was just a more dramatic way of doing it.

Bruce likes dramatic things, considering. The skyhook yanking them out of the HK building into the sky? He probably just wanted to have some fun while he was on his missions. :oldrazz:

And LOL I remember someone in college spiked the slushy machine with vodka. Word got out fast and everyone ran to that dining hall. :lmao:

Right. It's clear he has self-destruction on his mind, not just destruction for others. Shooting himself in the head would probably have traumatized Gordon as well, considering everything they'd gone through together.

And that would probably screw up Gordon's kid real nice too, a guy shooting himself in the head while he's holding you and his brains and skull and blood spray all over you.

2.the only reason a lot of the jokers plots works is because gotham is so corrupt, he obviously had help from bent coppers and what not.
3. i think its because he is expecting it, its like in a fight when your expecting a punch its less likely to knock you out, but if someone blind sides you or hits you without realising its coming you get knocked the **** out!!
4. harvey was punishing gordon via his son, he even says so. "dont punish my son harvey, punish me!"
"i'm about to".

If Harvey flipped the coin and it came up burnt side, he would have shot himself in the head. DEAD. So then how would he have flipped the coin for Gordon? He should have flipped for Gordon first, then himself.

...This is not a plot hole.

It's entirely possible that if the burnt side had come up when he flipped the coin for himself, he would've thought or done something to get out of it. Just like in the car with Maroni. He was lucky and got the clean side, but since Harvey wanted him dead, he improvised and flipped the coin for the driver, hoping the crash would kill Maroni, too.

Nolan's Two-Face was very much driven by the rule of chance by the coin - there was no improvising in the car as a means to kill Maroni. If it had come up 'good heads' for the driver he would have had them pull over and gotten out.

This is proven with Ramirez - she lived to fight another day.

This isnt Schumacher's Two-Face who flips all day long until he gets a result he wants.

The entire POINT of the showdown with Gordon and Two-Face flipping for himself was to further cement the idea of 'fair' and the whole notion of 50/50 chance. The entire situation could have been adverted if Dent had flipped, gotten a 'bad heads' and blew his brains all over Gordon. 50/50 chance of the nightmare ending right there. But it didnt, it landed good heads. So 'Face moved on.

Again, none of this is a plot hole if people had paid attention to the film.

Harveys sense of chance throughout the whole film is twisted because its heads both sides. " I make my own luck" But when it gets scarred it becomes chance.

On my first viewing when he was secretly "interrogating" that psycho guy and flipping the coin for whether to shoot him or not and it landing on heads the first time and he flipped it again, I was like "wtf!?!? This is not Shoemaker again right?!!". I was relieved when it was revealed that both sides were heads and that he was "making his own luck".

Knowing Dent, we knew his coin would be a two-sided coin (or at least assumed it) so this scene never bothered me. I DID however freakout when he re-flipped it after flipping for Maroni, thinking "**** they're doing it AGAIN!" only to see he was flipping for the driver :P

How do you think Bruce got to Hong Kong without being noticed? He jumped out of the plane into the water. That's what him and Fox were talking about, we just didn't see it in the film. Bruce jumping off the building had nothing to do with their conversation. They were talking about getting in and out of Hong Kong, not what they were to be doing in it. We never saw Bruce arrive cause it wasn't important, as their conversation explained how he was to arrive.
