If he italicized "know" it would imply that he knows he's full of **** and the reader would infer that gambit thinks he himself might be full of **** as well. When he italicizes the "I" it implies that he alone knows he's full of ****, and gambit is unawares to his own ****-filled status. Now, there is an argument to be made that he should have just ripped on gambit instead of ripping on him by association, but I think that argument is, like gambit, full of ****.
