Forgive my ignorance, but what is 4K, and why should I care?
Im sure you do but like I said, you are in a very very small minority. The audience for this is too small to care about at the moment.I do.
Back when the Ps3 was launched, no one cared about blu ray. But sony invested their balls off into blu ray and the Ps3 was one of the heaviest pushers of that new technology. I wish the new gen consoles were more about that as well.
who the heck are those companies even? Id stick with someone more reputable like Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, etc....

Didn't know human eyeballs could see resolution that high.
Im an electronics snob. Im of the mindset that if you buy cheap product, expect cheap qualitySeiki is one of the worst brands of TV's you can buy. I've dealt with SO many problems from that company. TCL used to make the horrible Sears brand store TV's.
Neither are good. When I said 6-700 I should have said "Samsung, LG, Sony, Sharp," etc.
Hell even Vizio, which, IMHO gets a bad rub. Decent company to deal with that actually make solid affordable TV's for people on a budget.

Alright, well, when the prices drop, I might check it out.
Though honestly, 1,500 dollars for a TV with better picture than already great picture is pretty low on my list.
Plus won't they need some kind of new medium that can actually show that off?
So all our blu-ray players would become obsolete?

4K is 4,000 resolution. Trust me you can see the difference. My local best buy has a 4K tv beside a 1080p tv. Its something to bebold. There is a cityscape that is in the demo reel and you can see detail and objects in the tiny windows. Every miniscule nook and cranny pops out at you. The detail is bonkers, and the colors are so vibrant but they are not over cooked in a high contrast way. Its like looking through a window with perfect vision. Very detailed and natural.
RE: 4K
I don't plan on upgrading to that for a long, long time as I'm still continually impressed with how good movies look on Blu-ray.
