Ok so it's been 6 hours since I unplugged the lightbar in the controller and I started with a full charge.

After 6 hours of the controller being powered on it still has 2 out of 3 bars of battery power! You read that right. With the lightbar unhooked, the controller has only used 30% of the battery in 6 hours.

Granted I haven't been playing continuously but the controller has been on the whole time. I'll continue to keep an eye on the battery use, but as of now it's clear that unhooking the lightbar increased battery life significantly.

so does this mean yoshida was full of **** when he said the led doesn't take up significant battery life

you'd think it would be easy to just give you the option to turn the lightbar off..........

got me a PS4 today so far I only have Tomb Raider Definitive Edition at the moment

^ great!!

TR is a good game!

hope you enjoy your new PS4!

yeah I am getting more in the future, I am gonna pick up Last of Us this weekend too.

Yes. And a whole lot of **** at that, apparently.

I gotta admit I'm surprised by how much battery life it sucks up. I knew cutting it off would make a difference, but I never expected the difference to be that significant. The led itself is just a standard small one. It really shouldn't be effecting battery life that much. The DS3 has led's in it and it holds a charge fine. But for some reason the DS4 led drains the battery. The only thing I can figure is the lithium battery they used isn't up to snuff or maybe something to do with the color changes drains the battery more.

I'm gonna keep an eye on the battery consumption under different amounts of play just to make sure last night wasn't a fluke. Might also try a different battery with the led on so I can determine whether or not the stock battery is weak in the first place.

I don't know enough about this stuff to say so myself, but from what I am reading, the DS4 has a very weak battery.

If they had put a superior battery in this thing, we wouldn't have this issue.

Apparently some are even using a DS3 battery to double the life.

I think it was a cost cutting measure. They saved 10-20 bucks, from what I'm seeing.

Though why the hell you can't turn it off... that defies all explanation.

The battery life would still be inferior to the Bone's controller, but it would be doubled, if not tripled.

didn't marvolo say it was a 30% increase? that means it'd be only like a third better, not 2x/3x

well, i never was good with percentages

It's about a 3x increase. Before I unplugged the light my controller was dying in 6-8 hours. Now it takes about 18 hours. Well it took 6 hours to use 30% of the battery with the light off so without the light the controller should get about 15-20 hours of use before dying.

I wanna try putting a DS3 battery in the DS4 to see if that really makes a difference.

I'm also curious as to whether Sony used the same battery in every DS4 or whether they had 2 or 3 different types. It may explain why some people are getting better battery life in their DS4. If some manufacturing plants used one type of battery and other manufacturing plants used another type then one type may be weaker or faulty.

So, let's say roughly 18 hours.

Twice, or triple the typical amount people are reporting 6-10.

You can buy them for the like 10 bucks on Amazon.

the ironic thing is......isn't the light bar supposed to be for the VR set they have planned?

the VR set that isn't even out yet??

don't understand why they can't just give us the option to turn the light off.

I'll order one and try it out.

Yeah it's supposedly for the virtual reality headset which is fine, but the only purpose it serves now is to let you know the controller is on and to let you know when it's charging. Which even the DS3 had led's that are always on for that purpose but for some reason the DS3 light didn't drain it's battery so much. I really think that's the bigger issue here. Sony used cheaper weaker batteries in the DS4 and either don't realize it or simply don't consider 8 hours of battery life an issue. The lightbar being on always wouldn't be an issue if the controller had a sufficient battery, but Sony tried to have their cake (lightbar) and eat it to (cheap weak batteries) and it's just not working out for the consumer.

and it's a shame, cuz overall I really like the feel of the DS4.

Eh I'm sure they will in the future. MS said that the X1 can't function without the Kinnect, or back at E3 of 2013 said that the DRM was the core aspect of the X1 and could not be turned off like a switch. Both ended up not true, and they can work fine with out it.

I'm sure the same is with the light. It does not need to be on, and I have a feeling after enough complaints they will change it.
