The Official PS4 Thread - Part 7

It does seem rather odd for them to not do it, since it costs them nothing.

It's not like they're in cahoots with the power company.

Or are they?

Eh I'm sure they will in the future. MS said that the X1 can't function without the Kinnect, or back at E3 of 2013 said that the DRM was the core aspect of the X1 and could not be turned off like a switch. Both ended up not true, and they can work fine with out it.

I'm sure the same is with the light. It does not need to be on, and I have a feeling after enough complaints they will change it.

lol. that's true about the Kinect.

hope this lightbar issue is one of the fixes in Update 2.0.

there better be more features than just the ones they've announced ( Share Play, Youtube, Themes ).

You know...the PS3 touted that it could do lots of media things. But it's what killed it in the begining. What turned it around and allowed it to barley edge out the 360 last generation was focusing on games. Sony is not making that mistake again, their main focus now is games games games games. Sony unlike MS owns a movie company, they are against piracy. And don't lie 99% of the MP4 support you want is because people pirate movies and watch it through their game system.

I'm sure they may give that feature in the future, but right now, it's not really a big deal. The main reason people want it (they try to say it's trailers) but is to watch pirated stuff. Keep your PS3 then.

I believe Sony thought they could recreate the success of the PS2 with the PS3, only with a Blu-ray player instead of a DVD player. Unfortunately, while DVD was the biggest thing since... tapes? Most people don't care about Blu-rays.

While it's one thing not to support MKV files, Sony really should support mp4's. That's just basic stuff.

Even I have mp4's that aren't even pirated.

But MP4 is still a major format for most pirated stuff. It still stands as that's what most will use it for. Yes there may be some "home videos" that one may want to watch. But I would say that is probably their main reason for not supporting it. Because it was a thing they said the PS3 was being used for a lot.

They may finally do it in the future, but I think that is their main objection to doing it, and to me that seems self evident to as why they are holding out.

It's irritating, but I do expect results.

Microsoft has forced their hand on it. Sony is a very reactive company. Almost the anti-Nintendo.

Which is a good thing, really.

Ya, makes competition a good thing. MS and Sony have been very responsive.

The PS4 not having any video support doesn't stop piracy. Nor does it affect Sony. People that have video files in MKV or MP4 format already have means to view those and will continue to do so. I really don't see what Sony owning a movie studio has to do with anything. They already have support for MP4 in nearly every other device they put out from the PS3, Vita, tvs, phones, tablets.....what makes the PS4 all of a sudden different?

But doesn't the PS4 have some kind of movie / TV show streaming service or something?

Keep in mind that I don't get my PS4 until... I guess 9/11. Rather... unfortunate timing on Amazon's part.

Because pirating rates have increased a lot since those things have been released. A lot more pressure has been put on studios against it. I'm not going to go into the morality of all of it. But yes it can damper some piracy. People that have sold their PS3's etc want them on their TV. The screaming for it seems to indicate it does effect some.

Yes it won't stop it dead cold, but to them it could have some effect. Yes piracy does effect Sony. Owning a movie company does have a lot to do with it, since it takes away potential revenue in their eyes. Piracy may not massively hurt them...but it does not gain them anything either. So I think their reasoning...is why support it?

Video Unlimited? That's available on the other Sony devices I mentioned....

then why are they including it in their new product lines? The new Xperia phones and tablets that just got announced will have support for that stuff as does their current TV line. That argument doesn't really hold up and again I don't see what is so different about the PS4

I still question if that's even true.

Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in the world, and its ratings are through the roof.

The financial cost of piracy has to be the most overblown thing since voter fraud.

Still, Nintendo has lost entire console wars due to their phobia of piracy, so it wouldn't amaze me if Sony had similar beliefs.

With some popular things it does not hurt, but there have been smaller films, especially around Oscar time that are pirated more from screeners then actually people going out and watching them.

Again, ya it may not hurt them as much as they say...but again most the time it does not help them either. (in some cases both ways it may).

Because they don't connect to the TV......HDMI etc. I don't remember reading about the TV's doing that. But honestly I don't think their TV line will last much longer. But I think it's because most gamers seem to be heavy bit torrent users. But I think for the rest I don't think they see it as a problem.

Most will want to watch their pirated things on a big TV, not a pad or phone. That and those things take pictures and videos and people watch them on that. The PS4 is not usually used for taking pictures/videos. Pretty easy to see why they allow them for those products and not the PS4.

Um.....

and with their TVs, its as simple as sticking in your USB and selecting your files. No need for a PS4 or other device as they make it real easy their to view MP4s, MKVs and many other formats

that would be fine and dandy if they limited support to only the file format that is used to take videos, but their phones/tablets have allow for MKV support and those files are imported from an outside source, not made with their devices

Hmmm.

Well there must be a reason they are doing what they are doing.

I doubt it's for ****s and giggles.

But I still don't get the urgency for it on the PS4. I use it to game, so use your pad, or TV (most have USB now)

So why no USB support then?

What is the reason? Just not high on the priority list?

Yeah, most likely. Sony is billing the PS4 as primarily a gaming device and it is selling very well for them. Adding media streaming won't really effect their sales in one way or the other.

I'm mainly complaining because media playback was a key feature on the PS3 that actually led me to using my PS3 more than my 360. mainly because I found it easier to playback, and store, my media files on my PS3. You couldn't really store the files on the 360 ( had to read from a USB drive ), which it seems is also now the case with the X1.

So, since the PS3 had all those features, I fully expected the PS4 to easily have them, as well.

It would be like if the new iPhone 6 suddenly dropped key features that were present in the past models. You don't think Apple fans would be mad about that, especially when it's a relatively "basic" feature ( playing media files )? You don't think Apple fans would be mad if Apple revealed the iPhone 6 next week and said "We're going to make this the best damn phone in history. The primary focus will be on making phone calls. All other features will take a back seat."

At the end of the day, yes, I'm going to use my PS4 primarily to play games. that's what I bought it for. but, it would also be nice if I could use it for other things. Gaming consoles, like smartphones, have evolved to become multi purpose, multi function devices.

adding media playback may not have been an urgent priority for Sony, but now that the X1 has it, that kind of forces their hand to add it sooner rather than later.

cuz, right now, that is a feature the X1 can legit claim it offers that the PS4 doesn't. and I'm sure Sony wouldn't want that to continue for too long.

also, another reason, is that some games, like the WWE games, actually made use of the media files stored on your console to use as entrance theme music.

as of right now, it looks like that feature won't be in the new gen versions of WWE 2K15. so, in an instance like that, lacking media playback is actually affecting the gameplay experience to a certain extent.

I still use my PS3 more than my PS4 because the PS4 is so lacking in the media department. Until they allow USB MP4 playback or release a media remote that's not likely to change.

.

to be fair, Apple has removed features from its product line. The iPod Nano for example removed the camera as well as video playback functionality with the 6th generation even though both had been standard features in previous models. This type of thing isn't limited to Sony

it's probably working really well for them because it is $400. and I agree with raven x knight, the Ps4 should be able to do everything the Ps3 can, minus BC. when the Ps3 came out, it was pushing hard for blu ray which was still kind of a new thing in 2006. although it's still not widely adopted today, there is a good amount of people who watch blu ray.

wat would be really lovely is if the Ps4 could do everything the xbone could do, but just be quiet about it i.e. not market that stuff and just focus on the games, you know... but it can't.

...you keep acting like the X1 does so much more than the PS4.....

PS+ still has more features and deals then Live. It has a better designed controller (minus the battery part). It also is a more powerful machine...and even the X team admitted DX12 will not make it as powerful as some articles tried to claim. And not more so then that of the PS4.

Games are the most important thing, and that's what won them in the end for the PS3. They have way more in house studios. They are always focusing on finding new talent, making new IP's etc. That is the core fundamental and one of the reasons why the PS4 is outselling the X1 2 to 1. Because you know...it's a gaming machine.

well, it does. it's got the snap feature that lets you watch tv and play games, with the hdmi in/out, it's got direct x 12, it's got its own esram, a higher clock rate for the gpu, and a better cpu. the kinect also does things that the pseye will never do.

i have psplus but idc about it, the only reason i got it was to play online. and yeah i heard microsft peeps saying dx12 isn't as big a deal as others claim it to be but still... we haven't seen it in practice, we don't know what it can do.

and fyi... i thought the Ps4 was outselling the xbone 3 to 1, not 2 to 1. and yes, while sony has more 1st party IPs, xbox has always had way higher attachment rates, so 2 xbox IPs alone will probably outsell 5 Playstation IPs combined

Microsoft is sitting on several franchises that could be used.

They really should invest in new teams.

I'd love a new Crimson Skies, or a revival of Perfect Dark.
