The Official Superman Score & Soundtrack Thread

The guy who did Transformers should do superman.

My top pick would be James Newton Howard, but just to throw another, lesser known name into the mix: if they still want something "hummable" and Williams-esque without getting Williams himself, then they could go with Ed Shearmur. His Sky Captain score was obviously an intentional Williams Superman homage (to the point of rip-off, really), but it was still a beautiful score. And since I only saw the movie once when it first came out but still find myself randomly humming the theme every now and then, I'd say it was fairly memorable:

I could get behind Giacchino, too, even if I was a little disappointed with his Star Trek score.

Evidence IMO that Giacchino should do this and Green Lantern as well.

Giacchino would not be bad choice.

I have always like James Horners' work for these big pictures, especially after what he did in the LOTR's films.

I'd be happy with James Newton Howard. His scores for Shyamalan's films are excellent.
I'm still not sure of I want the Williams theme to be used again, as much as I love it.

Yup its time to have something new for superman theme. But if they wanted to use the williams thing i wouldnt mind if it was a special track played during the closing credits. Like what they did with the new star trek, we started with a new theme, and then the classic theme was at the end of the movie. But i do want to have a new sound for superman.

I thought Howard Shore did the LOTR score:huh:

My fault!

I have been getting confused between here and the GL board suggestions. James Horner maybe for the next Supes film or Giachinno?

I wouldn't mind Howard Shore. What he did in the Lord of the Rings films was EPIC and I think his style would be a good fit for Superman or the GL film(s).

Simple question. Would you keep the traditional (Traditional in the sense of Superman in the movies) Superman opening march or would you go in a different direction like the difference between Batman '89 to Batman Begins?

Just start with something new. As good and influential s the first supes movies is , how long will you cling onto something. It's time to move on and give other people a chance to make a ( worthy) theme.

As much as it pains me to say, something new. I wouldnt mind a hint at it somewhere though.

You know, this one is tough. I am definitely in support of the reboot/rebirth/or whatever we're calling it now, and I love the fact that Singer is allegedly off the project. I liked Routh and it's a shame he was wasted on Returns but given this is a reboot, I don't want Routh as Superman because this will only conjure up memories of that horrible movie. The same goes for Weiling -- neither of these two should be Superman in this flick.

Nolan, now Goyer -- these are absolutely awesome additions to the project and I'm much more confident now than I was when Singer was announced (though I admit at the time I thought Singer would do a far better job than he ultimately did -- yikes). Nolan initially had me worried but that he's a comic book junkie makes me feel much better (Singer admitted to never having read a Superman comic in his life -- scary).

As for the score -- I'm torn. I really do love that Williams theme and it's so iconic that I think NOT having it in some way would almost NOT make it a Superman film. I have to say I'd be okay if they kept it -- especially if they're not re-doing the origin (or even if it's re-done with flashbacks) ... I think most movie-goers are smart enough not to tie the reboot back to the Reeve films ... but if the WB/Nolan/Goyer/etc. feel keeping it would do more harm than good, then I defer to them.

I'm just very excited at the prospect of seeing another Supes film. After Returns, I feared I wouldn't get another one in my lifetime :-P

Either keep it or modernize it. The John Williams Superman theme is as iconic as Superman's shield, imo. Everyone knows it's Superman when they hear it. I see no reason why they shouldn't keep the main theme.

I'm not gonna vote yet..I'm torn..I think we need a new score, but I want hints of the old one as well.

Either change it completely or simply have a nod to it at some point in the movie like they did with Star Trek. Keeping the score didn't save, Superman 3, 4 or Superman Returns, it's iconic but not irreplaceable. If they need to jettison then so be it.

If the film is a complete reboot then the score should be changed completely as well. I adore the William's Superman score (it's one of my favourite soundtracks) but I would rather have a completely new score for a rebooted franchise.

I voted for complete change, though I would be okay with a modernized version. I just believe we can have a score that just as good if not better then Williams. I do understand those who wan to keep it and feel it just "belongs" because I have those same feeling for James Bond, Indiana Jones, Halloween, Terminator, and Star Wars themes.

the score needs to be changed since this new franchise has no connection to the previous one. Everything must be a blank slate!

Definitely change it. Williams contribution to the character was just as iconic as Elfman's to Batman's, but they still went in a new direction. And while it wasn't as memorable, it suited the new franchise very well.

So as long as the new score screams "Superman", we'll be fine. STAS and L&C did respectable themes while sounding nothing like the old-school march.
