The Official Superman Thread - Part 4

I can't wait until Action Comics #0. It sounds like it's gonna be fun.

Eh. I'll probably stick with it for a few issues, but honestly the current iteration of Superman has been appealing to me less and less over time. I may just end up ditching Action Comics too, on my way to apparently ditching everything at DC. Right now I can't see myself reading much more than New Guardians, Swamp Thing, and Animal Man on any sort of long-term basis.

I'm almost through with Swamp Thing and Animal Man. If Action gets mangled after Morrison leaves, the only comic I'll be following is what's left of Batman Inc.

I've stopped reading DC altogether..my favourite is superman and I think personally they've ruined him.
I like the way it was before..i could get this universe being like marvels ultimate line..but its not.

So now Wonder Woman will be important because she's Superman's girlfriend?

No. She'll be Superman's girlfriend because she's Superman's girlfriend. If making a character date a more popular character was a way to make them important, don't you think Batman would be holding Cyborg's hand on covers by now?

Do I really need to get into why that example doesn't work? It's not a secret, the heads of DC have openly said before that they're trying to give Diana a bigger spotlight. They just seem to be doing it in a mediocre way.

Wonder Woman's awesome in JL, and her solo series is great too.

It's not DC's fault if you sexist *******s don't give a ****.

There’s a reason why Superman and Wonder Woman being in a romantic relationship has only happened in Elesworld stories–since it was an alternate world story, there wouldn’t be any lasting repercussions that could be potentially detrimental in the long run. That and also providing fan-service. But with this being in-continuity for the foreseeable future, not only do I believe what little novelty in the potential for a Superman and Wonder Woman pairing will quickly wear-off, it’s going to be harmful to both characters, although moreso to one than the other.

The only time a romantic pairing between two superheroes works is if both characters are exclusively part of a team book and do not have any solo series of their own, and both Superman and Wonder Woman have their own series–two in Supes case–apart from the Justice League. Normally, this is due to the heroes coming from widely different backgrounds and set-ups, which means they tend to have different kinds of stories that wouldn’t usually fit with one another outside of the team book. In Superman and Wonder Woman’s case, they’re both similar kinds of heroes with similar kinds of stories, at least on the surface: Superman is more sci-fi, while Wonder Woman is more fantasy. In this case, however, it’s more on how the pairing will affect what each character represents.

One of the reasons why Superman’s relationship with Lois Lane has worked so well is because she plays to both his role as Superman AND Clark Kent. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, exclusively plays to Superman’s role as Superman and keeps him distant from his role as Clark Kent. And Superman needs to have a proper balance of being Superman and Clark to work effectively. But Superman is going to be comparatively find compared to what will happen to Wonder Woman. She’s supposed to the embodiment of female empowerment, that woman can be just as good as men. Now with this–and make no mistake–Wonder Woman has been relegated to being “Superman’s girlfriend” and has essentially been co-opted into the Superman franchise. Because the Superman franchise, by comparison, is larger, more widespread, and has better brand recognition.

I say file this one under “Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.”

Thank you, Walter Cronkite.

May we have another?

Funny, it feels like I just read that at scans_daily, stillanerd. :oldrazz:

It is stupid that they're gonna be going out, but we already knew this was coming when they announced the relaunch, so you shoulda got your b***hin' out the way already. :o

There's not much to complain about, it's just...repetitious. Superman switched up from a strong-willed, raven-haired white girl with no superpowers to a strong-willed, raven-haired white girl with superpowers. Yes, diehard Superman fans will hate on such a big change to his status quo. Yes, there will be the eventual feminist blog post about how Wonder Woman is losing her independence. Yes, DC will probably find some way to piss off Lois fans in the coming months. No, it won't be a big deal to most people, because we've seen this before.

IMO this is the best the DCnU Superman Suit has looked far, it doesn't look as much like armor too me.

Andy Diggle seems like an odd choice, if that is indeed who will take over for Morrison. Not exactly what I would expect, either, seems to me DC would want to try and get the biggest possible name they could to follow Morrison to keep the juices flowing. I'm not entirely sure who that would be (Johns probably would be the best candidate since he just left Aquaman, even if his plate is still rather full between JL and GL).

But you never know, these off the wall choices can, on occasion, work out pretty well.

I once asked at the store who would be better for Superman than Lois Lane,....

I wasn't serious and they knew it becauase I was a hater of lois for YEARS and they knew it.

The answers surprised me in how extreme they were:

1. Anyone (they were including same sex and animals folks)
2. ANY female with Superpowers, (They included borderliners like Canary and Manhunter.)
3. NO ONE - as in no female in the DC universe can step up to the plate and do as well as Lois.
4. No One Including Lois - Make Supes an Only like Captain Marvel.

What followed was the usual no holds / no quarter given hollerfest as each guy defended his position.

I was in the camp of Superpowered female of the durable set - maybe 7 to 12 women within the right age range who are tough enough to be paired with Superman.

Meh,.. I should start a thread - I wonder who should be with Superman in SHH's opinion if not Lois Lane.
