Yah, but having Krypton NOT be a sterile, unloving environment makes its explosion all the more tragic.

I don't see how . With Byrne's Krypton, we didn't just have the destruction of a planet; we had the demise of an entire civilization going on before Krypton even exploded. Plus, with Byrne's sterilized version, we get many more angles and dynamics to explore with Jor-el. He wasn't unloving at all. In fact, if their civilization had continued, Jor-el might've started a change in the way the rest of the planet thought about their way of life, much the same way he did to Lara in the last few panels before their deaths. We see the strength of his character because he used his dying moments to express his love for Lara; an emotion that was almost completely alien on Krypton. This makes Jor-el stand out quite a bit from the rest of the pack, and shows that Superman comes from special and unique stock from the very start.

This version also casts Jor-el in a more heroic light than the usual versions of the origin story by having him save his son, not only from the destruction of the planet, but from the cold lifestyle that had developed on Krypton. Personally, I'd rather be dead than live a heartless life without any caring. Jor-el recognized this and spared his son that fate.

Having Krypton be warm and fuzzy makes it more tragic because we can identify with them more, or something like that? Boo-hoo. Is that the only story-telling dynamic it can bring to the table? 'Cuz if so, I'll take Byrne's Krypton, with its rich history and tragic loss of love and intimacy any day of the week.

Actually, it's hard to tell which side you're on here. Comic Book Boy seemed to be impressed by the inclusion of a beard, whereas I called out the unnecessary change and its effects. Are you dismissing both my criticism, and CBB's impression, on the basis that it's simply "a beard" and not worth discussion?
I guess you could say I'm on the side of creative interpretation.

It just seems wrong to me that an artist would have to go one on a book in a different line, and out of continuity, just to draw a beard on one of the characters. I mean, I'm all for continuity, but at the same time, I don't think it should ever extend to the point where it's suffocating to the writer or artist. And that seems...really suffocating.

And yeah, it is "just a beard." If they had turned Jor-El into this middle-aged hippie, yeah I'd have a problem with that, if they altered his character or personality in anyway, yeah I'd have a problem with that. But it's not, it's one physical characteristic, that one artist decided he liked. While yeah, technically, it doesn't make absolute technical sense in continuity, there's much bigger things I'd complain about before I started caring about something has harmless as a beard.

As you said, it's just a beard. There's no reason why the artist or writer should feel "suffocated" by having to leave it out.

didnt a preview come out a few days ago for this? Is it just my store or did no one get this?

It's a two way street, man.

Indeed; no reason to praise it, and no reason to criticize it.

Nor is there any reason to needlessly include it, and no reason to leave it out, either (except that there is, kind of, a reason to leave it out, but I digress).

Jeez, with this train of thought, we can simply say "it's just a comic book" and end this discussion right here and never come back to it. That last part was sarcasm. Discussion of the characters and their properties is what the message board was created for, unless I missed something . If you don't like a particular discussion on how Jor-el looks, or don't think the conversation is necessary in the first place, don't take part in the discussion.

Neither Comic Book Boy or I had any problem talking about the beard. Why should you have a problem with us talking about the beard?
