Tom may be starring in Columbia's remake of The Fog. I'm going out in a while so I can't bothered to type it all again... check my site for more details. :)

I love a good horror flick, but I'm not sure that a remake of a Carpenter film would be my first choice for Tom. I wonder who's making it this time around.. that's really key.

Thanks, James. :)

James' site says the film is "set to be directed by Rupert Wainwright (Stigmata), and will begin filming in March."

March?

MARCH?!

Heh. Interesting.

Something is fishy here. Eight months from production start to opening in theaters? Hah? That's about right for a TV movie, but NOT a major motion picture. Is this puppy being produced for television?

PS: I'm till laughing at the March start date. ;)

Hmm... well, I did a little research. Here's what Variety had to say. The last paragraph explains the fast track...

'Fog' rolls in for helmer
Wainwright's in the clear for frightener redo
Dec. 1, 2004

By MICHAEL FLEMING

Revolution Studios has set Rupert Wainwright to direct "The Fog," the remake of the 1980 John Carpenter film that's been set for a March start date and an Oct. 21 release.

Carpenter and co-producers Debra Hill and David Foster sparked to Wainwright's fright fest "Stigmata." The helmer came in to the "Fog" redux with a take that involves fleshing out a storyline that was described verbally in the first film.

The original -- which Carpenter made for $1 million, using dry ice and a fog machine -- began in a Northern California coastal town, with ghosts coming to kill ancestors of the locale's founders who had double-crossed a shipload of lepers who'd bought the village.

"John laid the groundwork for a very classy, scary movie, and Rupert came in with a take that honors the original but builds on it and stamps it as his own," said Hill, who was Carpenter's longtime partner. "For us as filmmakers, the opportunity to use special effects to enhance the fog and make it an actual character in the film is very appealing."

Revolution had cause to accelerate the pace of a pic that has been scripted by Cooper Layne. The success of horror films "Saw" and "The Grudge" made the late-October date a desirable one. Shane Riches is co-producing the pic.

Hmm. My first impression was yuck. I'm not a big fan of horror pictures, particularly teenage slasher ones. I don't even watch that kind of tripe when it hits HBO. I know they're popular films and do quite well at the B.O. though, which might explain why Welling was even interested in such a roll. And if he does this one, it IS as the star, but still. I wish it was something more... oh, I dunno, cinematically substantial.

That said, I'll be first in line to see the pic if he does it. So there's one ticket sale towards the first w/e B.O. tally that can be completely attributed to casting. *ahem*

Well, I didn't see it opening weekend but the only reason I let the kids drag me to see CBTD was because Tom was in it, albeit barely.

The Fog isn't a slasher. It's suspense horror, I believe. I remember seeing the original, but it was a very long time ago... I'll have to go pick up a copy or rent it, if available.

I hope it's true. It'll finally put the kabosh on him not having a successful career post-Smallville if he comports himself well in it.

Here is what Hollywood North Report says about filming, which will be in Vancouver. (Convenient for Tom, since he lives there year 'round and also convenient if he's not quite done with Smallville by the time he's skedded to start filming...):

After a slow and cold couple of months things are really stating to thaw out here in Vancouver.

HNR has learned that Saw 2 is a lock to shoot in Vancouver in the coming months. Details are still developing and we’ll let you know when we hear any dates.

The Fog, under the direction of Rupert Wainwright, has set filming dates of March 14th thru May 16th at Lion’s Gate Film Studios.

And last but not least Final Destination 3, which is still supposedly going to be shot in 3D, will start rolling on March 21st and wrap on June 9th under the direction of HNR Favorite, James Wong. Production will also take place at Lion’s Gate Film Studios in North Vancouver.

Does anyone know when Smallville stops lensing?

Here's their original report on the film coming to Vancouver, dated in January:

remake of the John Carpenter horror classic locks into town

Following in the tradition of Hollywood's fascination with remakes, nevertheless comes good news for the Vancouver Film Industry. The remake of the 1980 John Carpenter horror classic The Fog will be shot in Vancouver under the direction of Rupert Wainwright (Stigmata, Blank Check). Producing is David Foster, Debra Hill and the man himself John Carpenter.

The Fog is set to shoot at Lion’s Gate Film Studios in North Vancouver with production offices now open and filming to start in March.

The original starred Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis and Janet Leigh with a plot that went something like this:

Exactly one hundred years ago, off the rocky shore of an isolated Northern California town, a ship of lepers was horribly wrecked in an eerie fog when the founders of the town purposefully misguided the ship, dooming everyone aboard. Now, tonight, the ghosts of the long-dead mariners have returned from their watery graves to exact revenge. Shrouded within a supernatural fog, the ghosts trap the residents of the remote community, intent on seeking out the descendents of those who founded the town...and killing anyone who stands in their murderous path.

*SIGH* Fog wont be as much box office as S though. Damm you WB :(

Yeah, but the short shooting sked may actually give him more opportunities to film something else this summer in addition to this.

We can hope, anyway...

That's a good thing. :D

You know it makes you wonder how the final episode of smallville will be. Will they tie the movie with Superman Returns, or will it stand alone.

Muscles, you need to get this idea into your head:

Warner's wants the two franchises to be totally seperate.

The one will have nothing to do with the other.

No way, no how.

It also means a major Hollywood motion picture starring Tom Welling will open BEFORE Singerman does.

Which means, if TW is the lead, he'll probably have to field Superman questions when doing the press rounds. I can already see the headlines in entertainment trades saying things along the lines of "Superman trades in the tights for a fog machine" or something...

If the flick ends up a huge hit (like does Grudge or Ring type numbers), don't ya think WB would be kickin' themselves that they essentially let a bona fide star go?

Even better: maybe he'd have two out prior to next June.

Heee!

:D

I really hope this is true. I think it would be a good career step. I'm just thrilled he's doing a movie and this should get a decent amount of attention. The more I think of it the better I like it. In fact if it isn't true I'll be majorally disappointed =(

Muscles, you're comparing apples and oranges. If Singerman costs $175M to produce and runs upwards of $75M in P&A, they would need to recoup $250M just to break even (very oversimplified to make a point.) If The Fog makes even $100M in theaters, the studio will be dancing in the streets. It's all about ROI, not breaking records at the B.O. (though some studios love to brag.)

Makes sense, but that would leave him very little time to actually RELAX LOL. I would think he'd like to have some time off during the SV summer hiatus. ;)

Well, I think there would be some people at Warners saying the same thing some folks would be saying here: "Told ya so." LOL

Meh. They knew what they had. They knew the risks. They made their bed. It's done. Time to see if the springs hold up to the pressure.

Yep, I really hope it's true too.

It'd be great if it were.

Actually I just went out to Best Buy for a little 12th Birthday shopping for my boy (hard to believe he's that old, seems like just yesterday I was having 21 hours of horrendous labor with him! ;) ) and saw The Fog there for only $9.99.

I decided to pick up a copy, it's a horror classic and I love John Carpenter anyway...

My son is 12! Taller than me size 11 shoes and a deep voice,Now he has 15 year old friends with earings, skateboards and saggy pants, scary stuff. About The Fog if he is in it do you think there is a horror forum somewhere where we can keep up with the latest news?

My boy is also taller than me, I had problems with his delivery because he was so big and I'm short 5'3", he's about 5'4"....

Yep, they are even more horror related web sites than superman ones... I did a search earlier today and it was funny, the casting wars are starting again!

It's funny what people think about who's rumored to be cast. Get this:

Kate Bosworth was rumored to be in it at one point!

Wouldn't that be a tad ironic? That she's in the movie he shoulda been in and he's in the movie she shoulda been in? :D

Rumored also are some faves from the Singerman casting rumors past like Charisma Carpenter and Evangeline Lily.

Too funny.

I guess fan casting arguments stay the same ("I can only see <fill-in-the-blank> in that role!"), it's only the movies that change. :D ;) :p

Just Google (or Yahoo) "the fog" and you'll get plenty of hits.

Well, like I said, I'm a bit of a Horror film fan, so this makes me somewhat happy. Somewhat, because as we all know, horror films can really scrape bottom depending on whose hands they are in. I need to do a little research on this one...

It seems like there are a couple of things about this film that may have made it appealing to Tom. If it's being shot on the fast track, then that gives him plenty of time to make it, and hopefully, another.. or just take some time off before SV starts up again. Also, since it's being shot in Vancouver.. he's able to stay close to home.. you know.. in case he's needs to be close to his, uh.. family. Ya never know ;) He ain't getting no younger. Not starting rumors, but just speculating.

The helmer directed Stigmata, was that good?

John Carpenter said he liked Wainwright's fresh take on the film, that has to be good.

It sounds very good to me.

Well, it's a pretty good speculation but who knows?

Personally, he seems like a homebody to me so filming in his own stomping grounds must be a definite plus to boot, even if he's not needing to stay near Jamie for any particular reason other than he's mad about her.

I actually thought Stigmata was pretty good  My interest is peaked on this :)

Eh. Worth a rental, but not not much more, IMO. Not a bad cast, Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne (who I think is wonderful)... the movie just didn't do much for me either way.

I never caught it but I do like Gabriel Byrne a lot... My buddy at work really liked that film a lot and he's a major horror film fanatic.

Maybe I'll set my TiVo to look for it.
