The Official Tom Welling Thread

When the announcers talk about Dwight Howard being Superman and all, they should show Tom Welling and say "See Dwight, thats Superman, step your game up cause Kobe has the Kryptonite" lol

If anyone doubts Kitsch's acting ability, just watch Friday Night Lights. The guy can carry a movie on his own.

quick question. I know Tom was on the poll about who should be cast as John Carter but did he ever actually audition for the role or was it just wishful thinking from a fan?

Wishful thinking (from quite a few fans). I think it would have been a good role for him. He also would have created more excitement for the movie than Taylor Kitsch.

I would argue that Taylor Kitsch is a far better actor, but that's for another thread.

I'm not talking about acting. I mean in terms of publicity. Welling could have gotten people excited. Instead, it basically has been "two actors from Wolverine sign up for John Carter."

The following, from The Playlist, seems to sum up what I have been reading from people:
Update: Lynn Collins, last seen as Silverfox in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," has joined the cast as has Taylor Kitsch (Gambit in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine") who is evidently the lead [ed. Dunno dude, pretty generic casting here, this just fell off my radar hard].

Are you kidding? Welling's reputation would probably hurt the excitement for the project. I think a talented, lesser-known actor is a far better choice than a talent-less, somewhat-known actor is.

I've always wondered how popular Tom Welling really is. Smallville was a pretty big deal back in the early WB days. But within the last few years, it'd be a massive stretch to say it's made a dent on the pop culture radar. And Welling hasn't been in a movie in four years.

I know what you are saying. The ratings for "Smallville" are, well, small. And honestly, I think Welling's future is behind the camera, not in front of it (by his choice as much as anything else).
But I do think he could have done well as John Carter.
I'm still not sure about Kitsch, though. I really like the character of Gambit, but he made no impression on me in the movie (which I blame mostly on the film-makers).
And, apparently, the producers of John Carter picked Kitsch over Jon Hamm and Josh Duhamel.

Hmm. I'm not sure I'd take Kitsch over Duhamel myself. Josh actually carried a primetime series and proved he could do action quite well in Transformers, but Kitsch's work on Friday Night Lights (especially the 3rd season) is enough to justify him getting the nod here.

I think Duhamel would make a top-notch Hal Jordan.
I need to see Friday Night Lights. I haven't yet, so I don't have much to base Kitsch on.
I didn't know Scott Porter either, so when word came down that he was up for The Flash, I watched some interviews. He seemed like a cool guy. So, those two and Connie Britton make me want to check it out.

I've wondered the same thing myself. Maybe back in the early 2000s, he was really popular but now, I think the general audience may know of him but won't care about him.

YEa its all about who you talk too i guess. He does have his fans and he does have folks who dont like him. Though even if tom did want to do this film and had tested he likely wouldnt have been able to do it due to smallville filming commitments if it was to start shooting this fall. We know tom works 15-16hrs a day on smallville.

Does Welling still purposely avoid superman comics?

For the first few seasons, it could be argued that it was just a Method Acting technique to not want to know too much about the “journey’s end” of a character; still, some 9+ years later, it borders on intellectual dishonesty.. At this point, how could reading current comics “ruin” his interpretation of Clark?

You know, there are some people out there who just dont enjoy reading Comic Books. Something to do with the format, or so I've been told. :cwink:

Who cares?

Its not a necessity for any actor doing any comic influenced live action role

In this situation, it's not required for Tom to read the comics. The show doesn't follow the traditional comic storyline and Welling has put his own spin on Clark Kent. There's no need to read the comics for the role.

Tom said at one stage he was asking Chris Reeve for advice about the Superman character and Reeve refused stating that Tom wasn't Superman yet. So for people to insinuate that he doesn't have any real interest in Superman because he doesn't talk about comics is pretty insulting. It's clear at this stage that he has a great understanding of the character tho because of how well he plays it.

He may very well read comics nowadays for all we know...
Phil Morris said months ago that he and Tom discuss Superman and comic book related stuff in conversation. If I'm not mistaken Phil also said that Tom came to him and said "I didn't know you were the most powerful guy (meaning MMH) next to Superman. You and that other guy... (meaning Captain Marvel)." So he must have some knowledge knowadays. I think after all these years he may have become a bigger fan of the character and researched it online or maybe even bought some comic books.
