I'm of like opinion, though I do occasionally cruise over yonder to see what's new. If a thread title looks interesting, I'll venture in. Don't know why though 'cause I usually end up frustrated, disappointed, or just downright confused. We're told to sit and be patient and not make rash judgments until the film comes out because nobody knows anything about the plot or script, yada yada. Yet those same people are making definitive statements about characters and other script-related info (no Otis, no Tesmacher, etc. etc.)

well the truley sad part is that said person is actually considered a "source" now by some of the newblings there.. As if the ability to Google news search somehow gives you credibility....

OMG! Look Hulk... they're doing it a-freakin'-gain. How many ****ing times does somebody have to tell the luminaries that the Superman Lives synop isn't K-Site's (or Moviehole's) fault? It's up on Warner's OFFICIAL press site!!! THEY are the dipschitts spreading misinformation.

My word! Somebody cue Remy Zero. Please?

Sorry to bring all this forward from pages ago, but...

But as James has pointed out time and time again, that fact in and of itself is not unusual. Welling has put on muscle mass *every* season. Considering the character he's playing, it makes sense. And who knows? It might actually be in his contract as a requirement. That said, it IS fun to speculate, so here's my two cents...

Q: What would Singer and Co. do if something prevented HWSNBN from being in the film?
A: They'd have to get somebody else, and QUICK.
Q. Who else did Singer technically sign for the role?
A. Duh!
Q. Wouldn't any such contracts still be valid, at least until principle started?
A. Makes sense to me.
Q. Would that include physical preparation?
A. Makes sense to me.
Q. With all of the pissing and moaning coming from various SV fishbowls across the net, why wouldn't TPTB put a kibosh on all the negativity by just saying Welling turned down the role?
A. Uh, because he didn't?
Q. With production on SV's 4th season due to conclude in ten weeks, wouldn't we have heard by now what film Welling was signed to that he referenced at the TCAs - last AUGUST?
A. If it was Superman, he probably still wouldn't be allowed to discuss it until after they start. If he has another film in mind for this summer, wanna bet we won't know what it is officially until *after* March 3rd?

Okay, that was three cents. But it was fun throwing that schitt out there. Lets see what sticks. ;)

Well Pat, if I suddenly had the urge to throw some pizza against my wall, and the toppings were made up of the contents above... I think it would stick pretty darn well...

But -- even if I didn't have this inclination right now, I can tell you that with regards to the toppings being discussed, the possibilities and timetables for new kinds of pizzas are endless...

You are not alone in still preferring the 'established' flat crust, that's all I can say.

(and here we go again...) [sigh]

Somebody saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaavvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeee meeeee!!!

Seriously, when I posted what I read from K-site, it took all of two seconds for James to explain what happened and we all moved on. And some people wonder why we "Exiled" ourselves to the Smallville forum.

Sheesh!

Gah! Yes, I digress. And I'm horribly off topic. The film is soooo far away anyway. I'd MUCH rather discuss SV at this point. At least we can look forward to a new episode of that. Tonight! :D

Yep.

I could talk Smallville all day... ;)

And sometimes do. :D

You go right ahead, Jack. THIS topic will always be in the back of people's heads, be they SV fans or Superman fans. Welling is playing a very specific character that for the most part, has a future that *everybody* knows about. HE made us believe again. There are a LOT of fans out here in the fish bowls who still hope to see that future - with HIM in it - not some interloper.

Well Pat, if I suddenly had the urge to throw some pizza against my wall, and the toppings were made up of the contents above... I think it would stick pretty darn well...
Heh. And we have a new metaphor. Cheese, ice cream, and now PIZZA! Well, for what it's worth, I LOVE pizza! And the more toppings, the better.

But -- even if I didn't have this inclination right now, I can tell you that with regards to the toppings being discussed, the possibilities and timetables for new kinds of pizzas are endless...
It warms my heart, not to mention makes me salivate. LOL

Indeed! Always good to get that kind of reality confirmation from the fishery. Being kept in the bowl all the time can make you jaded. ;)

(and here we go again...) [sigh]
Hands and feet inside the car at all times. Enjoy the ride. :D

PS: I was born and raised in New York, so is it any wonder that my favorite style pizza is from NY? Hee!!

hee hee :p

Pssst, it should be "accept routh, kneel before singer."

And the basic translation of Jack's amusing anecdote, for those who don't like to decipher, is:

A contract is a contract is a contract. And some people still like Thomas. J.

Me? I like three-cheese thin crust with ham and pineapple. Hold the olives and salami.

For all the people who claim Smallville is a "bastardization" of the Superman legend, I invite them to read Superman: Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen. It's a complete reinterpretation with no ties to comic book continuity. For instance, the story is set outside the DCU and instead takes place in the "real world." The premise is that Clark Kent is a young man who grows up in a small Kansas town. Everyone makes fun of his name. Even his parents bake hime Superman cakes every year for his birthday. But then one day he wakes up with all of Supes' abilities: heat vision, super-strength, flight, etc.

If you go by the most ardent SV-hater's logic, anything that contradicts John Byrne canon (or Richard Donner canon for that matter), it is a "bastardization." Then Secret Identity is truly a corrupted work. Unfortunately, it's one of the best Superman stories I've ever read. Hands down. So why am I posting this in the official TW thread? Well, I was thinking. If WB wanted a fresh, original take on the character for a film, (and if Singerman fails to meet expectations) I think SI would be an awesome movie. It's definitely an original interpretation, yet it truly captures the essence of Superman. Plus, if TW was cast, then it'd be the best of both worlds because a.) he'd be playing "Superman" without the purists worrying about mucking up canon; b.) there would be no connection to SV (because of the meta-storytelling involved, TW could play himself who one day wakes up with all of Superman's abilities); and c.) it could be a powerful, lyrical film. Granted, I still believe Birthright is the PERFECT Superman vehicle for TW if you wanted a traditional Superman story. But for something a little different, Secret Identity could be a wonderful movie.

If you've read it, tell me the scene where Clark reveals his secret to Lois isn't one of the best conceived ways to tell that classic moment.

cant say I'm innocent in that, out of nowhere right after a HWSNBN manip, some clown posts "How anyone can say Welling looks more like Superman than Routh is beyond me?" So I post a manip and say "Welling looks more like Superman than Routh" that of course incited the usual morons, who came to iit like a moth to a flame...so predictable and sad really... :)

Can I get a link for this?
I'd like to see what manip could possibly have been used to say that.

You guys kill me with all of the fatal error pop ups!

Hey, on a semi-related but rhetorical note, I wonder if those in positions of casting have taken into consideration the cross-gender appeal that Welling has managed to garner? Apparently, certain assumptions were made when G&M cast a former male model as the lead for SV. Yet TPTB were more surprised by the show's larger male viewership, which makes me wonder what their original target audience was. And did that revelation contribute to the change in casting opinions espoused by some of Warner's upper echelon over the past few years in regards to the Superman film?

By extension, I wonder if they're still looking at those aspects and using it as additional support for Welling's future casting consideration? Put simply, they've got an actor who has an atypically broad appeal that crosses all sorts of gender, ethnic and racial lines. Are they smart enough to capitalize on that?

Lokmon, I didn't read that Elseworlds, though I've been intending to. I did however read the full synopsis over at SHP, which is what got me interested in the story to begin with. It *would* make an interesting film, though like you, I would prefer Birthright. Anyhoo, I don't think SHP explained the key scene you mentioned above. Can you describe it here inside of spoiler tags? I'm curious. Tanks! :)

Sigh...and people wonder why I stay out of that forum. Haven't been there for weeks, and yet: Somehow when Welling's name comes up, questions arise as to where I am.

Agreed!

Honestly, the scene in which Clark reveals his secret to Lois [Chaudari] is best experienced through Immonen's art and Busiek's dialogue. But essentially, it happens like this:

Clark, who is a writer living in NYC, has been using his powers and an old Superman Halloween costume to help the citizens of the city in secret. Unbeknownst to him, he's being tracked by shady government operatives. Those operatives bait and capture Clark. After he escapes, he wonders if it's safe to reveal his secret to anyone, namely Lois with whom he recently started a serious relationship. BTW, the two of them were setup on a joke of a blind date. It seems that Lois is always being set up with "Clark"s and Clark is frequently set up with Lanas and Loises. Anyway, the scene in question is when Clark decides it's time to tell Lois who he really is. The two of them retreat to the top of her apartment building for a picnic. He tells her to start unbuttoning his shirt. She does and sees a Superman t-shirt underneath. Thinking Clark is pulling a name-based joke, he tells her to "look down." When she does, they are floating above the city. After accepting who he is, they fly down to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in one of the most romantic Clark & Lois scenes in Superman history.

Oh gosh [slaps head], yes, they DID describe that scene. I just forgot about it. The synop/review at SHP is VERY detailed; it's NOT a short read. Thanks though. Now I really *should* get my arse in gear and read the freakin' thing. The fourth book (in the TPB version) is what kind of slowed me down - I wasn't too thrilled with
the side story of his two daughters. Seemed more "out there" than the hiking trip in which he becomes Superman LOL.

DVDs soften blow for film division

Operating earnings at Time Warner's filmed entertainment division fell 36 percent to $201 million from $313 million. Revenue declined just 3 percent to $3.27 billion, well ahead of the $2.675 billion estimate of analyst Laura Martin at Soleil-Media Metrics, as well as the $3.21 billion projection issued by Peter Mirsky at Oppenheimer & Co.

Time Warner went into the fourth quarter facing difficult theatrical comparisons with the prior year's "The Lord of the Rings: Return of The King" and "Elf." Matters weren't helped by the poor box office showings of "Catwoman" and "Alexander" in this year's December period.

But strong DVD sales played a major role in the unit's results. "DVD has been the largest single contributor to our film segment's growth," said Jeff Bewkes, chairman of the company's Entertainment & Networks Group, on the earnings call.

Bewkes said Warner Home Video is particularly strong in DVD's fastest-growing category - full season box sets of television shows. "We're the U.S. leader in TV sales on DVD. We have 10 of the top 25 franchises," Bewkes said, pointing to the best-selling titles "Friends," "Sex In the City," "Band of Brothers," "The Sopranos," "Smallville," and "Aqua Team Hunger Force."

Warner Bros. DVD revenue related to TV shows will exceed $1 billion in 2005. Studio programs new to the format this year include "Night Court" and "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."

Cable-operations profit rose 32 percent to $497 million from $377 million. Revenue rose 10 percent to $2.2 billion, in line with the estimates of Cohen and Mirsky.

Personal interpretation? Don't expect to see SMALLVILLE cancelled in the near future, kids. :D
