The Official "Trinity" by Busiek and Bagley Thread

i dropped the book a few weeks back. i found it kinda bland and nowhere near as good as it should be.

I LOVED the reference to Bigger Melvin last week (or two weeks? I forget). One of my favorite Joker stories. And Batman stories as a matter of fact.

I agree with:

I continue to read Trinity and love it because Busiek and Niceaza are amongst the increasingly finite amount of DC writers who remember when DC was a functional shared universe and can utilize it without making a big deal out of it (which defeats the purpose, in ways that I can't really explain).

Especially in the first third, or act, or whatever, the relationship between the characters has been excellently done. I was reminded of Grant Morrison's run on JLA, just in terms of each character having a distinct voice, but also because they worked together in such an excellent way. The mix of old, established characters, and some newer b-listers has been excellently done as well, and does not seem forced as it often does in JLA (zauriel anyone?).

Basically, I'll say again that I am very pleased with this book, and this I feel is the way a weekly series SHOULD be done.

Take note, DC.

so how bad has this been sucking? i havent had any desire to pick this up lol

It's actually been pretty good. I must say I look forward to it every week.

I don't get why people hate it so much. The most common complaint I see is that the trinity aren't even in it, which tells me that people are getting too hung up on the literal implication of the title--that this is called Trinity, ergo it must follow Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman in each issue. I'm enjoying it as an Elseworld, myself. The trinity don't need to be present because the main story is all about what the world would be like if they'd never existed. It works for me.

I definitely agree with that and I'm definitely still looking forward to every new issue every week, but I will say that the complaint that it's a slow, plodding book is very very justified at this point. I was reading the issue I bought this week from the store and panicked for a moment because I thought maybe I picked up last week's issue by mistake, they were so similar.

Every plot thread is interesting and filled with a lot of very good Busiekking, but every plot thread takes so ****ing long to do anything. The adventures of Team Alfred in Eggworld should have been long done by now, I'm sorry but it really should. And reality has shattered throughout the DCU!...or rather, it's been shattering throughout the DCU for about a month and a half. I kinda lol at this point thinking of the people in the DCU going about their daily business for days or weeks all the while the sky poops lightning and hemorrhages multiple Earths all over itself. "Meh, must be that time of the year again."

Yeah, the pace does seem to drag a bit. But didn't 52 feel like not much was happening in a few stretches? I think it's just the natural consequence of having to fit the story into a full year's worth of weekly issues. That's not an excuse or a justification, though.

I'm pretty sure 52 dragged much, much less than Trinity. Some weeks were more boringer than others, but personally I never really minded its pacing or the contents in that pacing. Heck, I remember around this time of the year 52 was having awesome Holidays/New Years issues and every plot was at their apex.
