The Official Vertigo Thread

Does anyone know if Daytripper will get a hardcover release? I've just had the ability to read the series and really enjoyed it. I plan on buying the trade, but I would like a hardcover for this, not the tpb I see Amazon advertising.

I don't think there's been an official statement one way or the other, but I assume as much. That's pretty basic practice, right? HC release, followed by paperback?

Daytripper better get a hardcover treatment because that was one hell of a story and extremely emotional.

From what I've seen, most Vertigo releases get paperback treatments only, unless there is a Deluxe edition produced (I've yet to see any Madame Xanadu or Unknown Soldier HCs, or Fables for that matter).

Well, I do know American Vampire and Joe the Barbarian are getting HCs and Vertigo has released several OGNs in HC, but you seem to be right. I just assumed that was basic practice, but maybe it's not. Surely there will be, because otherwise the only collection of the series with be a paperback in February of next year, if Amazon's date for it prove accurate.

I have a question for those who've read it: is Sandman Mystery Theatre any good? I saw it today in my local comic shop as I was browsing the Vertigo section, and it looked really interesting (not to mention very cheap, which is always a plus). Thoughts?

I just know that Guy Davis did some artwork in Sandman Mystery Theater and I love his pencils on the BPRD miniseries. I've never read them but if Guy Davis did the artwork you know it's gonna have some sweet eye candy!

I haven't read any myself, but I hear nothing but glowing things, plus, it's Matt Wagner.

December solicitations are up. Nothing outside the ordinary for Vertigo outside two Vertigo Resurrected trades of Constantine stories:

VERTIGO RESURRECTED: WINTER’S EDGE #1

In time for the frigid depths of winter are ten previously uncollected short stories from the pages of VERTIGO WINTER’S EDGE – the timeless Vertigo title that featured comics’ most select and sensational creators tackling the imprint’s most enduring characters. Featuring The Endless, Swamp Thing, John Constantine and Tim Hunter in stories by Neil Gaiman (SANDMAN), Brian K. Vaughan (Y: THE LAST MAN), Dave Gibbons (WATCHMEN), Garth Ennis (PREACHER), Paul Pope (BATMAN: YEAR 100) and many, many more!

VERTIGO RESURRECTED: HELLBLAZER #1

Four of the industry’s biggest stars take on John Constantine in two hard-to-find 2-part stories! First up reprints HELLBLAZER #57 and #58 – the long out-of-print tale from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s (PREACHER) character-defining as Constantine and Chas confront some very macabre tests on human cadavers. Next is a story from HELLBLAZER #245 and #246 by new superstars Jason Aaron (SCALPED) and Sean Murphy (JOE THE BARBARIAN) following a doomed documentary crew exploring the mystery behind what happened to Mucous Membrane – Constantine’s former punk band.

Also, even though it's WildStorm, looks like they're doing a 'Lost Tales' kind of thing with Plantery

Looks like all the shifting in editorial has caused some waves in the Vertigo pool as well

Three editors from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint have been laid off as part of the company’s restructuring, The Beat reports: Joan Hilty, Pornsak Pichetshote and Jonathan Vankin.
Announced last Tuesday, the reorganization leaves DC’s comics-publishing division in New York City while moving the company’s administrative and digital and multimedia operations — including, presumably, the WildStorm offices now based in La Jolla, Calif. — to a Warner Bros.-managed property in Burbank, Calif. As many as 80 of DC’s estimated 250 employees are expected to be fired or relocated.
A cartoonist and veteran editor, Hilty began working for DC in 1995 in the Trading Cards department before moving to the DC Universe and Vertigo imprints, where she gave writer Brian K. Vaughan his break on Swamp Thing. During her tenure Hilty oversaw a variety of books, from Blue Beetle to Manhunter to the animation-based titles. In 2008 she and Vankin began focusing on Vertigo’s graphic-novel acquisitions, which included G. Willow Wilson’s Cairo and Matt Kindt’s Revolver.
Pichetshote, frequently cited as a rising star at the company, edited such titles as The Unwritten, Sweet Tooth and Joe the Barbarian. He’s rumored to be targeted for recruitment by Marvel.
A journalist turned author and comics writer, Vankin penned titles like The Witching, Vertigo Pop! Tokyo and Vertigo Pop! Bangkok before becoming an editor for the imprint in 2004. He oversaw such books as Hellblazer and The Quitter, as well as some of the Vertigo Crime line.

That actually sounds like quite a loss for DC's Vertigo imprint. Some of those editors did some pretty awesome stuff. I hope Marvel does suck up some of them and help them develop a more structured adult line like Vertigo. :o

Not sure what to make of the move. I guess it could be nothing more than just business in motion, but laying off the people who edit titles like Unwritten & Sweet Tooth, and the person who was responsible for getting stuff like Cairo and Revolver? Maybe it's just my paranoid nature, but I can't help but feel something is afoot here.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. I mean Unwritten is just a HELL of a book. That recent issue with the "Choose your own adventure" theme was absolutely brilliant. It's just...odd.

Whoa, Hilty's a big loss. I don't really pay attention to editors, but even I knew she'd had a big impact on Vertigo in the past few years.

It's a really good book, especially if you like the classic noir style.

I haven't read it myself; I actually ordered the HC from Amazon, and it should be here tomorrow. I just find it interesting that it's breaking the top 10 based purely on pre-orders apparently

Well, I can understand. It's got Stephen King's name on it and his fans are very loyal.

True, I'm sure that's the primary reason, but I don't think his Dark Tower comics sold like that (in the sense of doing so well a full month before release) and it was already part of a popular series. Though, I can't remember if he actually wrote those, so maybe that's why

No, he didn't write the Dark Tower comics or the Stand comics. I believe that Robin Furth and Peter David are handling the writing on the Dark Tower and Roberto Sacasa is doing the Stand stuff over at Marvel.

He actually wrote the second stories in American Vampire so that could be why.

Next up is The New York Five by Brian Wood/Ryan Kelly. Wood says "it's sort of a story about all the characters, rather than just one. . . . sort of different than the previous series" Berger explains that one need not read The New York Four to enjoy this book, and Wood corrects her "but you SHOULD." It will be 32 pages of story for $2.99, and a black and white book. Releases in January 2011.

Wood speaks of the end of DMZ with issue 72, "it's been about seven years of my life."

Official announcement : "Cinderella: Fables are Forever" will launch in February with the same creative team as From Fabletown with Love

Cover image for Fables 100 is shown and met with roaring applause. This will be a 60 page issue, including a main story, a game board, paper dolls, and short features as well

Cover image for Delirium's Party by Jill Thompson is shown. This is a follow up to her previous Little Endless series and will debut in March. Previous Little Endless books will be re-released.

Also, coming will be The Annotated Sandman, a four volume mega-book that annotates every page of Sandman

A new project will be forthcoming from Azzarello, this time next year. "It won't be 100 Bullets, but it will be awesome," Berger beams.

Also, they talk a lot about the upcoming GNs of How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less by Sarah Glidden and Cuba: My Revolution by Inverna Lockpez
