The Dark Knight Rises The Official "What Do YOU Want in the Sequel?" Thread

I love Catwoman but I would hate to see the next installment go there after TDK. I would like Black Mask and if we get a love intersest have it be Vicky Vale, just don't tell Crook that.

I find it highly ironic I've never visited this thread, and right when I do, I see that post. :cmad:

-Is it just me, or do you guys want this movie to take place, oh I don't know, at around 5-10 years after the events from TDK? I want a more established Batman, and I'm kinda sick of the whole "well, this is Batman's first years" argument. Batman started somewhere, cool, lets see a full fledged, hides in the shadows, not intimidated by his "desires, fears, anxiety, etc" Batman.

-No more friggin love interest.

-Bruce thinking back to his parents death, and wanting to continue being Batman because of his PARENTS. You know, the reason why he's fighting crime to begin with.

-I would like to have the Bat-signal back, but I have no clue as to how they're going to write that in now.:whatever:

-Bale having a better Bat-voice. Actually, scratch that, its not his Bat-voice the bugs me, but the way he growls in EVERY situation. Only use that for intimidation. If you're going to talk to Gordon, or whoever, then just have a whisper or a deeper voice that's easier to understand. I like the growl, but it was overused in TDK.

-Have either a new Tumbler or some kind of Batmobile. I really don't want to see him on the Bat-pod the whole time. It was alright at best, but The Tumbler is much more intimidating/badass.

-Make the suit look a tiny bit better. If they make the symbol bigger, use different gloves, and have the older style gauntlets, with more streamlined pants, I would like it a LOT more.

-Have him use more iconic Bat-gadgets this time. I want to see him throw some Batarangs, use his grapple gun to go up skyscrappers, etc.

-I want Gotham to look more corrupt and falling apart. I want it to look like Batman's war on crime is obviously evident, and no more "clean city" look.

Basically, I want more of the iconic presence that makes you think this is Batman and not real life. Having a realistic approach is cool, and Begins did an amazing job at it, but please show some Bat-atmosphere(Bat-mosphere?).

Or employ some elements from Dark Knight Returns :yay:......

Just curious, why do you want Vicky Vale to be in another Batman film?

If they didn't go with Catwoman I would rather have either Talia or Silver St. Cloud.

Yeah, if Catwoman's not in Batman 3 (tho it won't happen :P) i would prefer to see a strong love interest like Talia Al Ghoul than another damsell in distress, because that's what Rachel was, I loved Maggie as Rachel but she was just a girl in trouble and Vicky Vale would be the same. Let's face it, Kim Basinger didn't played Vicky Vale, she played Silver St. Cloud ;)

I agree.

With Batman being an outlaw, the third film would be the perfect opportunity for Nolan to further showcase Bruce Wayne's detective skills, as well as his reputation as a master of disguise. I like the idea of Rupert Thorne being a corrupt politician, who secretly runs the mob, and it would be great if Bruce Wayne infiltrated the mob as Matches Malone in order to tie Thorne to the criminal underworld. Nolan could have Bale in enough make-up that the audience is fooled for the first few scenes (kind of like he did with Bale in The Prestige). He could maybe bring Hugo Strange into the story as well.

I'd also like to see the return to Wayne Manor, an updated Batcave with the computer system in place, a new batmobile, and a trip to Thomas and Martha Wayne's grave site. I can also envision a Catwoman storyline overlapping the Thorne plot, and there would be plenty of room for a few rogue's gallery cameos (Penguin, Scarecrow, Croc, etc.). After reading Bermejo's The Joker, Killer Croc seems like a doable villain in Nolan's Batman universe. I could take or leave the Riddler, though I think Nolan could do something original with that character.

I like that idea.

If Killer Croc is to enter the third film, I'd hope he would resemble this Croc toy, which has a humanoid look with just enough of a monstrous touch. I think a Croc like that toy could be done in a live-action Nolan Batman movie, although knowing him he'd probably scale it down considerably to make it more human-looking.

I dont want Bat3 to take place 5-10 years after TDK, but I also don't think Batman3 has to take place IMMEDIATELY after TDK either. Just because Batman is on the run from the cops doesn't mean we have to see Batman and the fallout immediately following TDK. I say up to another year can pass in-between TDK and B3.... but 10 years in-between is way too long.

I don't want Miller's Dark Knight Returns.

I want Nolan's Batman 3-whatever-he-calls-it.

I think the actual amount of time that passes is less important than what's happened...or not happened...during that time. I like the idea of Batman being at large, but absent since the Dent incident...be it one or five years. TDK left off with something that really needed to be resolved in terms of his standing with the city and as a hero. He elected to shoulder the blame/criticism, so whenever it is that the third movie starts off, he should still have yet to redeem his standing and answer to that. Perhaps more time in between would help set things up that the city has actually gotten worse without him, so there will be that immediate urgency to figure out what he should do. Also, it would be understandable that he'd need at least some time to personally deal more with the death of the woman he loved, as well as the apparent resignation of his key ally within Wayne Industries. I think at least 3-4 years would be a good sensible passage of time.

I never said I wanted a TDKR style of Batman. I just want one that's actually established, and doesn't have to resort to consoling after every other scene. I was just so confused by how the character "grew" from Begins to TDK. It's like he went backwards from what was established already. In Begins, we saw a Batman that was determined, but made some mistakes here and there, although, he KNEW what his place was, and KNEW to keep marching in his war on crime. In TDK, he was all afraid and helpless, and was willing to take his cape off for a women first, and then a deranged clown that he couldn't stop immediately second. The last scene in Begins, we saw Rachel tell Bruce that "one day, after Gotham doesn't need a Batman" speech, and you could see the response from Bruce's face, which basically read, "yeah, this will NEVER happen, cause Gotham NEEDS me forever". Then we hear Gordon say, "I never said thanks", and then Batman, "and you'll NEVER have to". BOOM, Batman seemed like he was going to be established, determined, and kickin ass in TDK, but it was FAR from what we got. TDK should have been called Batman-The Rachel Story: How to take my cape off in 4 easy steps.:woot:

Fox didn't quit. What he said was "as long as this is in Wayne Industries, consider this my resignation". After Lucius was done, he hit the code, which self-destructed the machine, hence, he stays since its not at Wayne Enterprise anymore. :cwink:

I know, but I still thought he'd have reservations and might not stick around anyway. What's to stop Wayne/Batman from doing something like that again? And by that time, it may be too late not to be a guilty party to it by association. Either way you look at it, there's some mending, and perhaps some redefining of terms that has to be done between them, seeing that Batman basically went behind Lucius' back too far with that one, and ended up putting him in a tough spot with no leverage. Sure he had too, and the ends justified the means, but the next time may be one time too many...and the 'costs', as Lucius alluded to, may be too high.

Or...Fox could be taking a leave of absence in light of the fallout and how close they all got to being exposed by that accountant. Applied Sciences may have been completely mothballed during this time, etc. You never know. But I think that it would be a good dramatic element to have to reconnect somehow with Lucius as part of Batman's reasserting his place as a hero overall.

All of the above.

Wow, when I wrote this I didn't think of the Gotham Times. But after reading the letter by a certain Mr. Nashton I think I may be on to something with a deceptive, two-faced Riddler.

Edward Nashton said:
So now Assistant District Attorney Harvey Dent pretends to turn upside-down the city, speaking of truth, justice and so on. Should we believe him? I think not. The more he's posing as a man of justice, the more it means he is corrupted like every powerful man in the city.
Right now Dent seems different from the others, but that is only part of the game, so he can get power by the fools who support him. A man who comes in the darkest moments to save the situation exists only in fables; in real life, people like that have always had other (bad) intentions.

Do you think this is a subtle clue as to the direction Nolan may take with the character? A villain who does not appear as a villain at all?

That was something the viral campaign came up with. I doubt Nolan had any concrete ideas about what he wanted the Riddler to be like at the time that was written.

With the exception of no love interest (though I am fairly neutral on that aspect myself), I agree with pretty much all of the above. I cannot stress how much I want to see a much darker, colder and seedier Gotham like in BB, either.

The cleaner, more metropolitan Gotham of TDK worked well, allegorically, with the plot and themes of that movie. Also, notice that a lot of what Joker does takes place in broad daylight, whereas Batman is a creature of the night. It's a further way of taunting Batman because Joker knows that he uses the dark to his advantage, whereas Joker is kinda' saying "I don't take breaks, pal." He's slicing away at everything that symbolizes light/hope/solidarity in Gotham...and that wouldn't be as effective and disturbing in an already darker, danker, grittier atmosphere. When you think about it...what's more terrifying...a killer loose in the dreary alleyways of the decaying slums at 3 a.m., or in our schools and churches in the middle of the day/during Sunday mass?

Perhaps. But it's a good idea regardless.
Think about it, we've had all kinds of villains. Mysterious (Ras), socially inept (Scarecrow) or consumed by misanthropy and bitterness (Joker and Two-Face).
But The Riddler can be different to these guys. Someone who, upon first arrival, is loved. Someone handsome and extremely charismatic.
Making it all the more shocking when his true nature is known.
Nolan-approved or not, the letter hints at this idea.

Dent is still alive but in a coma. Batman/Bruce has him in a secret location under the care of a doctor and Lucius Fox. Meanwhile, a new villain has made his way into Gotham, leaving riddles and/or messages around town stating that he does know Dent is still alive and who has him. But most importantly, that Batman has him and that he knows who Batman is. The riddles must be solved and as a reward, the public will know the truth of everything but if they fail, a tragedy will take place. Bruce has also found a new love interest but at the same time finds precious items that were once in his possession lost/stolen. Bruce's feelings for the "new girl" mask any thought of her being included and it isn't until there is a major break-in at the R&D department that he suspects her being involved. A prototype suit was stolen and now there is a woman in the suit stealing the messages/riddles and holding them for ransom also making it appear that it is Batman, because of the suit, stealing them and not her. This prevents the public from solving the riddles and leaves Batman in a tight situation. Oh and the doctor who is looking over dent this whole time is "the Riddler".

What about Rhona Mitra as a Talia candidate?

I think she is hot. She is around Bales age, 34 soon I think....but she looks younger. She is beautiful with an exotic look, has a nice body, can act and she is athletic!

Sure, if you want a bad actress as Talia.

What I'd like to see:

Riddler. We've already tackled the fear and insanity/duality aspects of the Bat-Universe, now we need to tackle the intelligence aspect of it. Riddler is perfect for that. He should be very dark, very cerebral. Wash the nasty taste of Jim Carrey's Riddler out of our mouths. He should be like the TAS Riddler, but a bit more toned down, but still maintain a bit of eccentricity. He should be much deadlier as well. Don't solve a riddle? People die. That simple. No revenge motive. That doesn't fit his character very well. He does it simply for the intellectual stimulation.

Catwoman. Introducing Catwoman so soon after Rachel's death would create great conflict in Bruce/Batman. Here's the first woman since Rachel that he's felt a real emotional connection with. But she's a criminal. How could he have feelings for a criminal? I think he should find out her identity from the get-go. Catwoman, for God's sake, should be how she is in the comic books. For ONCE in our lifetimes. No magic cat resurrection after falling 20 stories. No magic cat powers and stupid **** like that. Master Thief/Acrobat with a fetish for cats. The end. And she better damn well have black hair. The perfect love interest for this movie. Because not only does she fill in the love interest spot, but she also creates great emotional conflict for Bruce, as mentioned earlier.

Some more villains as minor threats for Batman to deal with throughout the first part or so of the movie. Mad Hatter, Killer Croc(done like in the JOKER HC), Deadshot, Firefly, The Ventriloquist and Scarface. Hell, not even as direct threats. Maybe just cameos in Arkham, to show that Batman is still doing his job regardless of being hunted by the cops. And to show that the freak count is steadily rising after Batman's/Joker's very public antics from TDK.

I want to see more of a melding of the freaks and mobsters. Black Mask and Penguin would be perfect for this. Black Mask picks up the pieces after Falcone and Maroni, and becomes the new Big Boss. Penguin runs a fencing/gun running racket, with the Ice Berg Lounge as his front. Penguin really shouldn't have overly exaggerated features. He should look the way he did in Batman: Broken City. Shorter guy, in a tux almost always. Maybe a monocle. Maybe. I'd actually like it if Killer Croc was Penguin's body guard. Kill two birds with one stone. And save time as well. Black Mask should look as he did in that Return of the Red Hood run from a while back, business suit, with an extremely toned down black skull mask. Black Mask should be Roman Sionis during the day, new corporate executive in town(think Anti-Bruce Wayne, a real *****ebag), and then Mob Boss Black Mask at night. Controlling a huge piece of the Gotham Criminal Empire. Not only would they be in the movie, they'd create the great dynamic of the freak/mob combination, and maybe take it to the next level.

They should show the effects of Batman being hunted so harshly by the cops, how it interferes with Batman's mission. And there definitely needs to be a lot more animosity from the citizens. That would create great conflict in Gordon, trying to hide the truth about Harvey and Batman, but while publicly trying to make it seem as if he hates Batman as much as everyone else.

Batman should spend a lot of time in the newly rebuilt and upgraded cave, in the suit. Bruce Wayne should attend only a few parties or galas and such, and look very tired and worn down. Very haggard. Maybe one of the galas he attends could be hosted by one Talia Head, newly arrived Business Mogul from overseas. Just a hint at possible things to come.

Batman should be a bit more harsher on the criminals and thugs and punks he apprehends/interrogates. Almost as if he's venting all his frustrations out on them. All his frustrations as somewhat losing his ally in Gordon(their alliance has definitely become diminished), all the citizens that he protects hating him.

Bruce should definitely become a bit more controlling and paranoid. I'd like to see some new checkpoints, so to speak, around the entire city for Batman. Almost safehouse kind of places. Like in Batman: Broken City. I really loved that bit. And it definitely makes sense for Bruce, as he's becoming more and more paranoid, to have those safehouses around the city. Loaded with weapons, spare suits, computer terminals, almost like the Bat-Bunker from TDK but smaller scale and MANY more.

I would LOVE to see Harvey Bullock. We got a little taste of him, I think, in the cop that Joker had held hostage in MCU("I want my phone call" cop). But we actually need a Harvey Bullock in there. Maybe not dirty like he was in the comics, since we've already had several dirty cops in there, but maybe "soiled", like he was in TAS.

I'd like to see Batman constantly updating his suit. I'd like him to some how keep the sonar lenses(only work on the immediate area he's in), but for him to incorporate heat vision/night vision lenses as well. Few more down to earth but still cool as hell gadgets for him to use as well. Definitely keep the gauntlet blades weapon.

And speaking of his equipment, I'd like to see him bring back the Tumbler, but make some MAJOR overhauls and "improvements" to it. I loved the Tumbler, but Batman would almost compulsively need to update his weaponry almost all the time at this point. And that would include his vehicles.

I'd like to see a few more nods to the comic books, character-wise and continuity-wise. Very subtle ones, but nods none the less. Let's keep it classy. Just little nods and such throughout the movie. Easter eggs for DVD obsessionists.

I think Two-Face should return. It's very easy for him to return, he didn't look dead at all, and I think Nolan set it up nice and vague for a possible return. After all, how would Batman be redeemed in this movie without Two-Face? Yeah, Gordon could come clean, but it would hardly prove anything. Especially with people so eager to love Harvey and to hate Batman. He'd have to have been still alive to prove Batman was innocent.

And last, but definitely not least, Joker. I honestly think the Joker should return, but at a VERY limited capacity. Hire somebody who has the same basic build as Heath, do up the same make-up and such, and put him in Arkham. Straight Jacket, of course. In a "super" plexiglass cell by himself. Armed guards 24/7. Unknown on his cell door where the name should be. I don't want him to say a word. Not one word. Batman should secretly visit him every night at the end of his nightly patrols, just to make sure Joker is still locked up tight in Arkham. He could also hack into the security systems of Arkham and have a live feed of Joker in his cell at all times. Joker's escapes from Arkham should definitely be cut down majorly in this movie. At this point in the comics, it's become a total joke. "Arkham's Revolving Doors." No, Joker should and would need a lot of time to plan his escapes from wherever he's being held. Maybe a cameo or two by his new Psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel(not a speaking cameo, but definitely a shot of a blonde woman in a white coat leaving his cell every now and then. All Joker would do is smile and twitch and stare. Maybe even stare at the same spot Batman stands every night. And then, maybe, toward the end of the movie, Harleen helps him escape. And that's a big maybe.

That's the stuff I'd like to see in the sequel. Some of it isn't as important as most, but most if not all the character stuff I'd want to see. Characterization is KEY in these movies. We have to care about these characters and keep caring about them as the movie goes on or else it just wouldn't fit. Bring the entire movie a bit more down to earth. Definitely make it more cerebral(suits the Riddler as one of the villains).

But yeah, that's the stuff I'd like to see in this movie. And I think it's all very doable.

Nice idea Batman072, but I think it seems a little... dull.

I mean, we have Joker, one of the craziest, insane, charming, evil, and great villains to ever appear in cinema, and then we have Tahlia al Ghul, and Black Mask. Not as appealing as the Joker. Joker needs to be the main villain, Ledger or no Ledger. Just because Ledger gave a great preformance, doesn't mean that there aren't any other actors out there who can do just as good of a job.

I like the idea of Batman being paranoid and constantly checking Arkham to make sure Joker's still locked up nice and tight. Wherever he goes, death and chaos follows, so it would be natural for Batman to be afraid of Joker getting out and causing more mayhem. I also like the idea of the name above his cell being "unknown" but I don't think he should be in his makeup. He should look like he did during in Loeb's funeral. If Joker isn't the villain, maybe never put his makeup on throughout the entire movie.

I don't really care for Catwoman, and I don't want her to appear. I really can't stand these 'badass female' types that appear in movies. Too many bad memories of awful movies like Resident Evil, Ultraviolet, Underworld, Domino and Aeon Flux. I think she has potential to work in Nolan's universe, but she's just not very interesting. Also, we've established for two films that Bruce is in love with Rachel. She gets killed and Batman is supposed to just brush it off and start dating some burgular floozy? (No offense to Catwoman fans. I really liked her in Batman Returns, but you have to admit, her character basically is kinda ****ty. That may have been the creators intention)

Nolan said once before in an interview before Begins was released, that he found the character of Harley Quinn to be very interesting. It's also been mentioned that the Nolans want to explore Batman villains that haven't been used in a movie before. This would be a good time to introduce a completely reinvented Harley Quinn.

I liked to think of this Harley Quinn as someone who is obsessed with the Joker's reign of chaos and want to "carry the torch" so to speak and bring chaos to Gotham once more. Batman needs help from the Joker to find out what she may be planning or where she may be so he goes to Arkham to question him. I don't think Harley should look as whimsical as she does in the comics/cartoons. Something less flamboyant. Something messy and gross, like Ledger's version of the Joker. Maybe in her obsession with the Joker, she gave herself scars to be more like him. Maybe later in the movie, she causes chaos and Mayhem, and frees Joker, only to get killed by him in the process. (I don't think Nolan's Joker is interested in the opposite sex.) and from then on, Joker takes over as the villain.

Two-Face could appear in flashbacks or old news footage on TV, but he shouldn't be alive. Eckhart asked Nolan if he'd be back for a sequel, and Nolan told him that Dent is "toast"

Also, we don't need Batman's name cleared. You're missing the point of Batman's Sacrifice. If people found out Dent murdered people, all of the criminals he locked up would be back on the streets. That's why Joker went after him in the first place. He didn't have a vendetta against Dent. He didn't waste his time trying to corrupt just one person. He was looking at the big picture. Corrupting Dent would free all of the criminals and send Gotham into chaos and anarchy. THAT'S why he went after Dent, and THAT'S why Batman took the fall for him. To keep the criminals behind bars. If people found out about the truth, they would be released, and the Joker would have won.

I like the idea of Batman never being thanked for his good deeds, and actually being persecuted for them. It makes him more of a loner. More dark and brooding. A true dark knight. We've had people look up to Batman in Batman Begins and parts of The Dark Knight. This could also open up a debate amongst the people of Gotham, one side thinking he's a murderer, and the others acknowledging him as a hero. (Gordon's family, the blonde boy in Begins, the hostages in the prewitt building, Coleman Reese, and the people on the ferries will always see Batman as a hero, regardless of what the newspapers say)

I think the next villains should be Harley Quinn, Penguin, and Joker. Black Mask, Tahlia al Ghul, Riddler and Catwoman are far too boring and won't be a big draw to go see the movie, like Joker and Two-Face were in The Dark Knight.

^I don't find Catwoman to be dull. She's one of Batman's few A list villains left and can definitely bring out a different psychological side of him. How does he react to a criminal that he's in love with? I'd like to see that.

Black Mask isn't well-known to the GA but he's always seemed to me like a really frightening villain. Batman needs at least one bad guy who can go toe-to-toe with him physically in his movies (think of Ras and Joker) and BM could fill that role.

^^
As I was trying to say before but my post wouldn't post.....dammit! LOL

Anyway....nice ideas and I think some of those would be doable but not all. A more cerebral, psychological, mystery crime thriller would be great to see in this next Bat film from Nolan.

I would definitely like to see Selina because she would add an emotional and challenging dynamic to the story. Bruce needs someone like her in his life and she needs someone like him just the same. It would be great to see a true and more ideal interpretation of Selina/Catwoman onscreen and yes she needs to be a brunette. Perhaps interwine Selinas' abusive past by having Sionis be her father and possibly him being responsible for her mothers murder? Just an idea...

I also would love to see the addition of Dr Leslie Thompkins in the next film in a minor yet strong supporting role. She would bring some drama, motherly emotion, and also some potentially fun and flirty scenes with Alfred. An easy way to introduce her would be for Alfred to ask for her assistance and surgical experience to help a badly beaten or shot Bruce after a near fatal confrontation (mainly due to physical and mental fatigue from running from the cops and trying to solve the Riddler murders) with a hired mob assassin who is also a member of the League of Shadows secretly (possibly Deadshot, Deathstroke, or Lady Shiva). Then while he recovers and heals we can see some emotional scenes of him, Alfred and Leslie remembering the past and how Leslie disapproves of him being the Batman. During his recovery it would also allow Bruce to do heavy detective work to try and solve these riddles and catch this serial murderer known as the Riddler who is testing him. Us fans and the general movie audience would finally get to see Bruce in the new Bat Cave do heavy detective work and we can also see Bale/Bruce do some working out in the cave to get physically strong again. It would be cool to see a scene or two where he is not just working out physically but also meditating the mind and preparing mentally. With the track that was used when Bruce was testing out the big gun in TDK and when he was putting together the suit in BB as the background music) these ICONIC and AWESOME scenes would be just great for us fans and the general movie audience to see onscreen.

Batman will solve the Riddler murders and be there to help Gordon and Ramirez make the bust. Batman will focus on facing the assassin who almost killed him and get the long awaited rematch....which should be an epic fight scene to say the least.

Gordon and Batman would still have an alliance of course. Gordon would be working with Ramirez (who wants to make up for the Two Face debacle) on either the Riddler murders or illegal arms dealing going around the city.

I feel that Sionis or Cobblepot can work. Perhaps even having them work hand in hand? Penguin doesn't have to be this extravagant heavy baddie for the film and I think he could fit nicely into Nolans world as a supporting character villain especially with the right actor 'ahem Bob Hoskins' who wouldn't need prosthetics to play Penguin (much like Falcone, Maroni, Scarecrow were used) who is a seedy and shady night club owner who is also involved in black market arms dealing. He would be the one who is selling arms to Sionis cult/mob members.

I would like to see Batman be more brutal and punish criminals more in this film by seeing some arms, legs, shoulders, hands, knees and noses broken. I would be good to see Batman using his elbows, knees and wrist blades more when fighting and I would also like to see some more brazilian jujitsu and see Batman body slam foes with authority by using jujitsu moves as well. Since we didn't see much of the batarangs and smoke bombs in TDK, I think it's time we see those weapons and gadgets put to use in practical ways and not over the top ways. We got a small peak of those weapons in BB, and this next film would be the time to see the Batman use them when fighting or in stealth mode or when he needs to get away from the GCPD.

I agree with you on your take about Batman having some more checkpoints or safehouses in different areas of the city like he did in TDK for him to basically "disappear into the night" when things get dicey around Gotham City, especially with the cops hunting him down.

Oh yeah and I still think Mitra would be a great Talia. Mitras acting skills are good enough. Plus she is exotic looking much like Beckinsale but Mitra is in better shape and is more athletic than Beckinsale. The actress that plays Talia doesn't need to be an academy award winner.
