Some of these reviews are making me go...

Yeah, I'm surprised it's been so well-received. I figured from what I knew of it that it'd be at least as critically acclaimed as 'X-Men', but so far this sounds like it may be the best one yet. Or at least on par with 'X2'... and I'd be more than happy with that.

Concerning the last review, I never got this "James McAvoy might seem an unlikely contender to play the young Charles Xavier" thing and I don't get why reviewers see the need to point out that the actor who plays the troubled, damaged, etc etc etc character always steals the show. But I'll stop before JP hates me. :o

I have no idea why people sell JM short like that. But I can see why they praise MF for this film. He's a good actor and he mos def got the juicier role. He got a chance to stretch his chops with Magneto by going through a character transformation throughout the course of the film. James as prof X is the good guy who stays the good guy. So his part is less demonstrative. Of course having not seen the film yet this is all just speculation based on what I've read so far. If Fass hit all of the right notes as Magneto it is meant to have a powerful and memorable impact on the viewer just by virtue of the character arc.

I think there's a character transformation to Xavier as well, but it's more subtle. I mean, he's the good guy who stays the good guy, but I can see him going from this reckless, charming and näive playboy who uses his power to pick up chicks to a man who learns responsibility and how to be a leader. And through Erik he also understands the pain and anger of other mutants, and how his money, power and empathy could help them. He's noble, but also tragically näive in many ways, and I like that there's a more complex and human Xavier in this film.
That's a LOT of acting, man! ;)

Oh that was very well said and I agree. But as you point out, it's subtle.
I think the issue is that Magneto's change drives the story though. And you're right, that is a lot of acting. That's why in every review it's pointed out that Xavier's and Magneto's relationship is at the heart of the film. I think back to that video of them talking about how they collaborated on how to approach these characters and united to get their ideas across to the writers and director. That's just how it should be.

Exactly! With Mac And Fassbender, we can see by reading/seeing their interviews that it was very much a team work, as in one taking from the other as much as giving. A lot of reviews notice how they are both equally brilliant, and how this amazing collaboration between two gifted actors help make the film truly great.

It just annoys me this "McAvoy isn't Xavier" thing that has been going on from day one, when in fact he has the talent to be pretty much anyone he wants. Even Wolverine. :woot:

oh heck yeah!

I seriously can't wait any longer and I mean that with the lowest amount of hyperbole as humanly possible.

I want it on DVD already. :csad:

pfft, I want it on blu ray lol.

Its still surreal that FC is getting such glowing reviews. Over the past hour or so I've been reading the old X3 threads, and Wolverine opinions, about trailers, TV spots, pictures and what have you. Its quite a different feeling around here now, its VERY refreshing and relaxing to say the least.

Mac and Fass should have both been in inception(as you know who and his friend), I love these two. So glad Fass chose this instead of spiderman.

So 19 reviews now and still 100%. Very nice.

These “origins” stories are the fun part, while also containing the seeds of the character’s psychological trauma.
The X-Men series has been back-to-front in this respect, opening in 2000 with the mutants Professor X and Magneto already as adversaries, their powers and those of their supporters in full flow. The producers were holding something in reserve. They started tapping into that potential with the mundane X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In contrast, X-Men: First Class is the real deal; with British director Matthew Vaughn at the helm (full of beans after Kick-Ass), not only is it a near-perfect example of the “prequel”, it’s also my favourite of the series so far.

I'm pleased that XFC is still at 100% on RT, but I'm even more excited that the critics have given it an average 8.1/10. That is a great score.
