This show has got to be expensive to make with the special effects. With less than 5 million viewers, you have to wonder if Disney or Marvel has a tied bit of doubt in them.

How many viewers does it have world wide though? Also it will get some back on merchandising.

I think it's trending at ~ 9m with the +7 day figure; then there's the rest of the world and I'm sure the number will increase when they figure out how to use Netflix properly.

Not really toys for the series, just some movie-themed figures of Coulson, Hill, etc. for Marvel Legends.

Sort of concerned for the show's future and season 3 at this point.

They are still killing it in the +7 ratings.
The DVR numbers are a decent gauge of a show's overall popularity, but ABC still makes the vast majority of their money from TV advertisers. People who watch on DVR almost always fast forward through commercials. Advertisers know this, and thus will not pay more for advertising time based on DVR viewers.

The Nielsen ratings are flawed, and as time goes forward will be less and less important. But at this very moment they're still the best indicator of a show's chances.

If ABC is happy from the ad revenue that SHIELD is generating, they'll renew it. If it isn't, they won't. Other factors come will into play (DVR, streaming, OnDemand, DVD/Blu Ray sales, network politics [SHIELD will benefit from being owned by the same company that owns ABC], tie ins with the rest of the MCU, actor contracts, creative staff contracts, etc) but the most important one is the Nielsen C rating (we don't get to see those numbers generally, but the L+SD numbers are usually held to be a better analog for the final C ratings than the L+3 or L+7).

I'm generally a pessimist and not actually a fan of the show, but if I were betting I'd lean towards it getting renewed. Another factor that works in its favor is its episode count; shows that can get a certain number of episodes under their belt can be sold into syndication. At the end of this season SHIELD will be at 44 episodes, which is 1.5-2 seasons away from common syndication numbers. If it does get a season three, season four is all but guaranteed for that reason.

I have read that the syndication target number has actually be drifting downward in recent years. If so, it bodes even better, as its that many fewer episodes before hitting the magic number.

renewed with another cut of budget like the transition between season 1 and season2

The lack if locations, appearance and the dimensions of sets it's hints. Pay attention: every episode with a big sfx is always Endorsed in set, never in location, wih few people.... They have to save money. In the first season (especially in the first episodes) was different, take a look yourself

So basically an educated guess.
it is possible the show is aiming for more intimacy

I'd argue that there have been a lot of outdoor scenes this this season. Even in episodes with big sfx. The few people thing went away when real shield, who has a lot more agents, took over the playground, so that's justified. Hell they've even had a big car crash scene this season in an episode that had a ton of extras in it. Plus the number if sets they use has gone up since last season has well. If anything the show looks a lot more expensive.

Umm... how about the fact that they have a bunch more regular and near-regular cast, you think they come cheap? They also have a LOT of effects, a lot more than most people even realize. They're not cutting corners on anything, your assumption doesn't add up.

And the FX they have had this season have been pretty amazing for tv. Absorbing Man, Gordon, Quake, all really impressive which suggests that the budget hasn't been cut.

Live + 7 Day ratings for the week of 3/23/15 (Week #27):

S.H.I.E.L.D. posted its largest playback build of the year among Adults 18-49, catapulting +87% over its L+SD rating to deliver a 2.8 in the L+7 numbers and holding steady with prior week (in the L+SD numbers, S.H.I.E.L.D. was off a tenth of a rating point week to week).

Let's be honest anyone saying AoS is in danger doesn't know what they are talking about.

Taking out ABC's Thursday Night Lineup, AoS is the #2 drama on ABC for the season (going by season 18-49 avg). So ABC would pretty much have to cut every other drama except for Thursday Night and OUAT to justify getting rid of AoS. Which maybe they would but that would mean axing 9 dramas including AoS and Castle. Not sure a network has ever had that kind of massacre.

But then there is also the chance that ABC might not even have much of a say on AoS's fate, that might ultimately come from Disney.

Also a Season 3 means a Season 4.

Put this thing on Netflix earlier rather than later and I think season 3 will have a massive ratings spike.

If they're talking of a spin off they are not cancelling it. This is the MCU. Not only is it it's own show. It is a walking advertisement for all their other stuff.

This right here , release the first ten episodes now, rest of them in July. People who want to give the show another shot need to be given the chance to. Plus others could just stumble upon it.
