Capcom The Resident Evil Thread

I'm about 2 or so hours into my first playthrough of VIIIage. Why didn't anyone tell me this was the best 3D castlvania? Iq went in completely blind. Didn't follow any of the marketing. I'm excited to see where this goes. Going from TCM to dracula is an interesting shift but I'm high as a kite and I'm here for it.

Village was great, I didnt like RE7 but thats just me. Ethan was also an awful protagonist.

Ethan is actually my favorite RE protagonist to date. Everyone else is just a military bro which has never done anything for me.

I mean Claire was a Biker, Leon was a rookie cop just out of the academy, and Chris/Jill were just cops that were accepted into the equivalent of SWAT.

If you want to add Billy and Rebecca they were a convict and a medic.

Ethan was the definition of milquetoast, just so whiny and *****y.

Cop/swat/medic/soldier, it's all the same to me. I'll give you Clare and Billy but even still. I thought his responses to the situation he found himself in were more than valid. No bull**** one liners, the just frustration and terror but I'm also getting a sense that you and I like this series for very different reasons Which is also valid.

A cop and soldier have wildly different skill sets. Same with a medic.

Either way, seeing trained professionals deal with an insane situation is fun to me, it's why I love Predator. The campiness of it also gave it a certain B movie charm that just fit what the game is.

Seeing some average guy probably act the same way I would in the same situation, but with crappier dialogue, just didn't interest me.

It's all the same to me. And that is where our tastes diverge. I never looked at the original Resident Evil as internationally campy. I assumed as a kid it was a language barrier issue with Capcom localizing it in house. It was the first game I ever played that felt like a legitimate interactive horror movie. When they remade it for the gamecube when I was in high school and removed 90% of the camp, it felt like the game I saw in my head when I played the original.

The dialogue in RE7 isn't that bad. It's very to the point, but there wasn't anything that made me cringe and it gives you exactly what you need to know. Texas Chainsaw and The Blair Witch Project are two of my favorite movies ever so was all in on 7 but I totally get where you're coming from. You want Dutch and I want Ash from Evil Dead 1.

I like seeing the reactions of both trained pros as well as normal people who I can relate to more. There’s always that extra panic for me in a given situation when the pros themselves panic though!

That's actually a pretty good way to look at it lol

I enjoy the more action focused RE games so I prefer characters with military training.

I hope we get a new lead in Re9, preferably a blonde woman. I said blonde since Jill is a brunette and Claire is kinda a redhead. So looks wise, it should differentiate her from those two. Personality wise, I want her to be like Ada, a bit cold and mysterious, but will later show a vulnerable side kinda like Katniss Everdeen.

They killed my boy. Now I'm back to playing as bland ass Redfield.
I'll be finishing up this playthrough tonight and posting my final thoughts.

Finished the main game. Overall, I think 7 is still a better game but Village is solid. It's very front loaded and after the Fish boss, everything else is underwhelming in terms of design and I dont like that big major connections to the greater RE mythology were left in a document that I somehow missed ( but that's on me.) I did like the ending though.

You already got Rose in the Village dlc...

I loved the RE4 Remake, except for the last couple of chapters. I felt it was all a bit too much, I actually just ran through some sections. :D That last part of the game reminded me of where RE5 and 6 went wrong, too much of a focus on action.

They're clearly setting up Rose and Redfield up as RE9 protagonists. I just hope they shake up the story structure a bit because Village was basically copy-pasted from 7 with a different setting and far less interesting characters (to me at least) and substantially easier.

On a side note, are the Revelations games worth playing? I apparently own them on steam and completely forgot about them.

I would say the Revelation games are better than RE 5 & 6. They have the vibe of the first 3 games, maybe not quite as good, but I think they're worth playing.

I don't want Rose as a protagonist though. And I have doubts that they would use a DLC lead as the lead of Re9. I feel like the Winters story is over when they killed Ethan, and I prefer if they move on with someone else.

As for Revelations, I skipped them. Though from the walk-throughs, Revelations 1 is a must play. But personally all the numbered games are enough for me. The Revelations games in hindsight are merely side games that have zerø impact to the main games.

They're 100% setting up Rose as the next lead in either a numbered entry or a side game. She's too powerful to just leave hanging and she's also working for Blue Umbrella with Redfield already.

My biggest concern for RE9 is they make the mistakes of 5 and 6 again and lean entirely too far into action again. The lycan den and Heisenbergs factory felt like Quake levels which would fine if I were playing Quake but this is RE. Capcom has burned me in the past so it's hard to be cautiously optimistic about anything they do anymore.

Would have thought they’d learned that most fans want survival horror over all-guns blazing action that you can get in other games. The reception to 6 and then 7 would hopefully ensure that they don’t go down the wrong path again. (I like 5 btw :D)

I'm just not a fan of the daughter/son taking the lead role in general, and in this case, its the daughter. Also I'm not a fan of "special powers", like I don't want that fantasy nonsense in Resident Evil moving forward.

Special powers are...pretty much everywhere in Resident Evil. Krauser can turn his arms into freaking swords and shields.

People have had powers in RE for at least two decades now. As long as there's some kind of in universe fake science explanation for it
