Capcom The Resident Evil Thread

Same. It's a great co-op game. But as a Resident Evil game? Ehh...

Yeah, 4 is one of the most non-RE-esque games of the series.

Considering how, for 11 years, the games have been made in the style of RE4 outside HD remasters, it's probably the most RE-esque game really.

Capcom has released new information, video, and screenshots of Resident Evil-themed multiplayer shooter Umbrella Corps introducing the game’s “Multi-Mission Mode.”
Get the information below.
“Multi-Mission” mode, as the name implies, consists of rounds that cycle through 8 different rulesets at random. This allows the same team members to consecutively enjoy different gameplay experiences in a seamless way, and provides an expedited matching process for quickly getting into the game. With the random ruleset selection, all teams must stay on their toes to adapt their tactics each round in order to come out on top. An overview on each ruleset can be found below:

  • Target Hunter – One target will be chosen per team and only killing that target will count towards the score. Players can choose whether to focus on protecting their own target or aggressively attacking the enemy target.
  • Respawn Match – Team deathmatch featuring respawns. Take advantage of the on-screen sound radar map to locate the enemies’ random respawn points.
  • Domination – Secure the specified data transmission point located within the stage for a longer time than the enemy team in order to win.
  • DNA Hunter – Kill zombies and collect their DNA samples. Destroying the opposing team’s Zombie Jammers is a key strategy in this mode.
  • SP DNA Hunter – Kill the special mutated zombies and collect their DNA samples. They are particularly tough and immune to the effects of the Zombie Jammer. It’ll take teamwork to bring these creatures down.
  • Collector – Teams battle it out to see who will be first to collect all 5 briefcases in the stage.
  • Protector – Find the briefcase and hold it for as long as possible, while fending off the opposition. The player who has it will become a moving target, so teams must work together effectively.
  • Collar War – Collect the battle data “collars” of downed enemy players, and pick up allies’ collars to prevent the enemy team from getting points.
Umbrella Corps is due out for PlayStation 4 and PC in May for an MSRP of $29.99 / €29.99 / £24.99.

Yeah, 4 is one of the most non-RE-esque games of the series.

I always viewed RE4 as "RE4-in-name-only" As in if you took Leon and Ada out, there was nothing about it connecting the other games. 5&6 had flaws, but they kept the themes and other gameplay elements from the older games.

Resident Evil 4 took the idea of Resident Evil, and made it fun imo. It has the Resident Evil DNA, but makes it far more playable. Still one of the finest action games of all time.

I can't say I agree at all. RE4 has way more DNA of "classic" RE than 5 or 6 as far as design goes. Backtracking, setting, and general campy horror tone is a lot more present in 4 than 5 or 6. You also still play an isolated protagonist (Ashley is there, I know, but not through the whole game and generally she doesn't do much when she is there). It also has attempts, albeit less complicated than "classic" titles, at puzzles which 5 and 6 mostly dropped.

There's really a lot more of the "classic" series in 4 despite what a lot of people may think. You have to dig a little, but it is. No doubt a departure from the older stuff, but if 4 was the dock, 5 & 6 were the boat that departed.

Unless we're just talking about story-wise, then yeah. RE4's story is pretty random in the grand scheme of things.

To me, Code Veronica will always be the true Resident Evil 4. It served as a great sequel to RE2 and seemed like a natural progression for the series on next gen following RE3

Well, I think "great" is over-selling CV quite a bit. I found it enjoyable, but it's definitely pretty low on the list.

RE4 was indeed a bit closer to the classic trilogy, but only a bit. RE5 discarded remaining classic elements to make co-op possible, RE6 is a catastrophe in nearly everything, but quite impressive visuals.

I still think RE2 is the greatest RE game ever - unrivaled drama and atmosphere, characters, music. But RE1 Remake is close second.

This.

That's why it shares one of the top 2 spots for me along with RE2.

I like to consider Code Veronica as the true RE3. Wasn't it supposed to be like that?

I think I remember someone saying that they had to release another numbered game on PS1 before going next-gen, so we got RE3: Nemesis.

Yeah, basically. Sony demanded that Nemesis be a numbered entry since they felt a spin-off would be less regarded. Which I guess is true, but it still sold like half of RE2, though. CV would have been better to have in the numbered ones.

Could be fun, I guess, but I don't know who would want a lot of that, outside Hunk.

I love RE3 as the numbered RE3, that game deserves more love.

@1:49 Where did Nemesis come from?
And man, he fights like Mr. X, wonder if the tentacles stay.

Oh god it breaks my heart to see you write this.

I'm a hard core fan of the classic Resident Evil games and had plenty "fun" with them. I love pre-rendered backgrounds, fixed camera angles and tank controls.

I'm going to have to go to my War Room and pray about this relationship now.:o

PS: Resident Evil 4 is a great game though. It destroyed the series but it is a great game. Personally I hope RE2 remake is made in the same style as the excellent GameCube remake. The backgrounds don't have to be pre-rendered and really have no reason to be but I'd prefer fixed camera angles.

RE3 is my favorite of the franchise, but it was at the end of the day a side story of sorts. The only notable story element was the nuking of Raccoon City. It was more like RE2.5

Resident Evil 3 is underrated. Nemesis is such a great ****ing monster. He's like what would happen if a cenobite joined the military and liberally borrowed Chris Roid-feld's steroids.

Yes it took some elements from Resident Evil 2 but it's still completely it's own game. Capcom meant it too be a side story and I guess it is but it still feels so much like it's own game and seems to be barely merely a side story. Even with my conflicted feelings, I still see Code Veronica as the real RE3, it just can't be called that for legal reasons.

I still like Code Veronica but it pisses me off that despite coming out after RE3 you have to press a button to go down the stairs! The Dreamcast was a way more powerful system than the PlayStation and yet you didn't have to press a button to go down the stairs and that isn't the only complaint. RE3's controls overall feel more evolved and fluid to me and that makes no damn sense to me. For that reason despite my love of CV's storyline, I believe that it has aged worse than RE3. Also CV should have looked better. Way too much fog and unrealistic/poor shadow effects, it's not a pretty game. It was a 10 when I played it on my Dreamcast 15 years ago but now it's an 8 out of 10.

Hardly. If anything, it did the opposite.

The resurgence of appreciation for the older RE titles has really brought out the revisionist in many. Being there, I know RE4 was meet as a breath of fresh air in a series that had become pretty stale. That style of game was really on its way out, despite what a lot of people try to claim now. People were starting to get tired of it, and you can see that as early as RE3, which sold just a little over half what RE2 did. And audience's had tepid response to REMake, Zero, and Code Veronica (even though critics have always loved REMake). The landscape of gaming and what general audiences wanted was changing, and I am 100% sure that had they just continued on with the same style with 4 and onward, RE would just be another headstone in the graveyard of Capcom's IPs. The template that RE4 set really helped the series stay relevant for a new generation. Maybe that's what "classic" fans wanted, for the series to die out and they could have nothing but nostalgic memories of what was, but I"m glad it didn't.

Resident Evil 3 is underrated.

I don't know, I feel like RE3 is generally well-liked for the most part. It seems people who outright dislike it are in the minority. I mean, I think it's a half-baked turd of a game myself, but I am usually met with people who disagree and like the game.

I've heard opinions like yours before and that's fine. Different strokes. I love the old games.

Like I said I loved RE 4 but the series going fully off of the rails with RE5 and the "nobody liked it" RE6 just turns me off. I'm currently playing Revelations and like it though. So I'm not totally against shooter RE but I am totally against RE 5 and 6.

I wish they would make two types of Resident Evil games. Games for people who enjoy shooters and games for those of us that enjoy the classics. I'm fine with updating things but when you toss out everything that made a series what it was, why should I care? I mean even Silent Hill was turned into a mindless shooter. Lol That's just sad.

I liked it too, but it did feel like a side story. Aside from Raccoon City exploding, which could've been done by the end of RE2, it didn't feel as relevant and like a step ahead in the story as CV.

I love the old games, too. Well, most of them, anyway. But I recognize that times were changing, and I know a lot of people were starting to get tired of the formula. I know now it seems to be more polarizing, but there was very little hate for RE4 at the time. It's obviously not possible to know for sure without the invention of an alternate reality machine to see where RE went if it didn't go in the RE4 direction and stayed more on the traditional path, but the overly slow and (deliberately) clunky controls just aren't things I think would have translated well into last gen.

I don't mean to bash to old games or anything. Hell, I bought REMake and Zero HD and enjoyed both as much as I did when they first came out. I'm more someone who likes both styles about equally, but I do think the series as it is now is far more marketable to today's audience than the old games could be by far.

Like I said I loved RE 4 but the series going fully off of the rails with RE5 and the "nobody liked it" RE6 just turns me off. I'm currently playing Revelations and like it though. So I'm not totally against shooter RE but I am totally against RE 5 and 6.

Well, I mean, RE6 sold over 6 million copies and is Capcom's second highest-selling title, so somebody must've liked it :cwink:

I'm fine with updating things but when you toss out everything that made a series what it was, why should I care? I mean even Silent Hill was turned into a mindless shooter. Lol That's just sad.

I feel with the success of REMake HD and maybe the success of Zero HD (not sure what the sales are like on that one, yet), I think that it may be headed that way. A lot of that will hinge on whether they chose to remake RE2 in the style of the newer games or the older games.

Personally, though, I am with you. I think it would really only help the franchise in the end. I would be up for it.

RE6 sold 6 million and a lot of those people didn't seem to care for it. I'm thinking that will effect the sales of RE7. But yes it was a short term success and yet Capcom were disappointed in it's sales for some reason.

I remember people getting sick of the RE style and I don't think that it was wrong to change it up, I just wish it wouldn't have gone further than what 4 did.
