The Runaways Thread

I'm glad Ryan's coming on rather than Norton. Whedon's a new writer with a very different style from Vaughan's, so I think it's appropriate that the art style gets a big change, too. Norton's art is similar in a lot of ways to Alphona's.

But a "horror" sort of character hasn't cropped up since that vampire in Vol. 1. Unless, as I said, you lump "supernatural" with "horror" and then Nico fits as a mage.

A vampire on the team would ****ing rock.:csad:

Which isn't so hard to imagine happening with Whedon taking over.:oldrazz:

Just read the new issue of runaways well it pretty much confirms that Nico did it. Huh and with a robot too.

How did you get to that conclusion?

Issues 21 was great. Damn Chase for busting in just as Victor was gonna get some action. Hopefully BKV will do something big with Nico/Victor before he leaves.

I gurantee you that if BKV puts them together they will break up within a few issues of Whedon's run. He can't stand happy couples in his work.:o

To be fair, MOST writers can't stand "happy couples". Why do you think a lot of modern writers' best approach to a married couple is to have them fight a lot (almost to the point of dysfuntion and even beyond)? Many writers and sometimes even the audience may find a "happy couple" either boring or, cynically, "unrealistic". Admittedly, in real life such couples are rare and may not last.

I'm not denying that Whedon's done that. Heck, he's seemingly trying to do everything in his power to break up Scott & Emma and appease the hardcore Jeaniacs. I'm simply saying that he's hardly the first writer who's trademark is causing romantic strife.

TheCorpulent1 has a good point on comparing Norton & Alphona and noting the differences in style between Vaughan and Whedon. Whedon's decompressed as hell; I don't think he could do a 3 issue story to save his life. Lord knows TORN could have been condensed to maybe 4 issues if he wanted. Instead it's plodding to 6 and has seemed like it's lasted 20 years thanks to issue delays. I can't wait for it to end. If it ever ends. Vaughan's had some 6 part arcs too but he's also had plenty of shorter ones to mix things up, even a one-shot. That doesn't mean all the stories exist seperately and the way everything ties up it sometimes gells, but that's how you best do modern stories. You don't have to have every story be "6 issues or bust" but that doesn't mean you can't tie it all together and make it work. I haven't read Whedon's DARK HORSE Buffy/Angel/Spike stuff, but from ASTONISHING, I fear some decompression. He should be able to match Vaughan's spunky dialogue, though. And Ryan's art is very pretty, much like Cassaday's. Just methinks Whedon sort of sees 3 comic issues as one episode of TV, and this is a fella who gladly would drain 5 episodes doing very little to amp up a 6th. Even fans have complained about that bit.

On the plus side, Whedon is a self-admitted fan of RUNAWAYS and in interviews BKV admits that Whedon has a better memory for some of their backstories than even he does (Vaughan admitted to needing post-it notes on his comp to recall some character's names; he does write other books).

Issue #21 had a great climax and while I hate to admit that BKV really is leaving, I'm jazzed to see where he lives the book as he claims it's a highpoint for the series. If USM has taught me anything, it's that any writer can outstay his welcome and once you do, all your past works are forgotten if you are currently on crap. While Vaughan's still pretty strong after 39 issues and I doubt his last 3 will stink, it is wise for him to want to leave the book at it's peak, rather than when he runs dry. If only Bendis realized that on USM, I think it'd be a stronger book now.

Nico has already had sex with Victor, don't you remember the issue where they were naked in bed together??

This last issue was a let down- major filler!

What comic are you reading?

I remember seeing Nico fully clothed under her sheets with Victor fully clothed sitting on her bed. Thats it.

And Dread I only pointed out the happy couples thing with Whedon because of the numerous times in the past he had admitted his love of torturing people in happy relationships. It is pretty much a convention of any Whedon work and one I'm expecting to pop up in his run on Runaways.

Oh yeah whens the last issue of Runaways/YA out? It's been pretty good so far.

Fair enough.

YA/RUNAWAYS #4 was originally solicted by Marvel for Oct. 25th. It wasn't on the list for Nov. 1st so it's at least 2 weeks late and may be longer. I don't know if this is art issues, writer issues, or just holding it back until CIVIL WAR #5 ships around the second week of November. I agree, it's been kicking rear and I can't wait for it.

I'll have to keep an eye out for the new release date for that issue then. Keen to read as hopefully its the end of Xavin, although I doubt it. The Skrull has just never fit into the team.

So...Whedon wants to move the Runaways into a new environment they have never been in before? Can anyone else picture Runaways in Space?:o :cwink:

Vic: "I like you better when you're telling me to go slow."

What the heck do you think he was talking about? Massaging her bunions? They had sex, move on.

I like Xavin. I sort of like over the past year we've had some Skrulls show up who weren't just generic evil people (like Xavin & Crusader). Heck, even Super-Skrull's been downright noble lately between YA and ANNIHILATION. They spent too long as generic green invader aliens so it's good to see some who aren't. He's not my favorite Runaway but he's fine to me.

Whedon's plans for the Runaways involved them being on the road more, "running away". Even Vaughan claimed "they're the most stationary Runaways ever". Just so long as they avoid NY, which is just crowded with metas. But of course issue #25 won't come until Feb. and we don't know what condition Vaughan will leave them under.

I thought he was refering to how she basicly told him to back off after Gert's death.

You know, more of an abstract use of the term 'go slow' as opposed to the physical sense.

I could be wrong though. Maybe I'm the only one that read the line that way.

Victor: "I liked you better when you were telling me to go slow."

Nico: "What did you say?"

If you go back and read the comic again, the words "go slow" are even boldened in the script. I don't think they'd emphasize that unless it was some kind of innuendo.

Oh without a doubt Nico and Vic did the nasty. I think enough hints have been dropped.

I like the idea of the Runaways moving around, I mean they're runaways after all. But it'd be nice to see them in different settings. Like someone else said, just not NY. They have been there already, plus everything is in NY these days. Nice to see Runaways being different.

Okay...so possible places the Runaways could go...

Space - Karolina and Xavin are aliens with waring home planets. Wouldn't be so crazy to think that the Runaways could end up on some far-away planet. Even if it would be a big leap from what we are used to.

Back in time - They do have a time machine...

To the Future - They do have a time machine...

Iraq - Special issue sponsored by the American government where the Runaways end up in Iraq and discover that it is right for foreign forces to be in control. Highlights would include Molly joining Al Qaeda and George Bush swooping in to save the Runaways in the Fantasticar.

I also wouldn't mind seeing them end up in either England or Italy. For no other reason other than I have strong links to both countries.:woot: :oldrazz: :cwink:

Personally I'm going to be sad to see them leave L.A. If only because I hail from there and the whole west coast mentality and jokes make me feel comfortable.

I'd like to see them going to France. Don't know why really, just want to see them in France.

It's obvious that Nico & Victor slept together. Any more obvious and it'd be porn. I mean, really, every time I get annoyed when a writer spoon-feeds something so deliberately a ******ed seal could get it, I have to remember that there really are people that slow. Every time you are hit over the head with an obvious thing in a story? Thank these people.

Shame Wanda's still missing, Nico could compare notes about sleeping with an andriod creation of Ultron. ;)

I was the who said, "Just not NY". It's overloaded with metahumans. It'd be more interesting if they toured other areas of the nation for different locals and possibly meeting other threats. Imagine the Runaways in Vegas! Or Chicago! Changing the scenery isn't a huge deal. I mean, isn't Daredevil in FRANCE now!?

I wonder what will "encourage" them to leave. Will it be a healthy dose of exploration to try to recooperate? Or because some nasty threat blitzes their Hostel?

Not sure I would care for the Runaways in space, even if it is possible. I prefer them grounded a bit on Earth. And I usually don't care for Time Travel stories, even if Vaughan did play with them a bit (Future Gert).

And Marvel, under any circumstances, would never allow anything to be published that in any way, shape, or form even HINTED that Iraq "wasn't a mistake/isn't fundamentally wrong" or that Bush is something other than a dullard or a fascist. They're liberal in one of the most liberal states in the union and that's just life. When was the last time you read any comic with a conservative viewpoint? Or at least where a conservative viewpoint wasn't treated as something nefarious? ;)

To this, I would say, they would not be welcome. They already have authority issues, being American's with pride and authority issues would just make it that much worse.

They should go to Hawaii. Or if you really want them to get into trouble, Cuba.

If you want controversy, put them on the East coast. I love the elite when they mix with rational, everyday people who challenge them.

I like Xavin myself... but whose Crusader? Are you refering to the Skrull in Marvel Knights Spiderman's Wild Blue Yonder arc? Because I thought he went by the name Tiller.

So are there any ideas what the next arc is about? The description is so incredibly vague its not funny.
