I'm glad he chose to keep him light. At least now we don't have to hear the constant "Chase is all emo now!" rants.

The line about Chase's smoking habit is really no big deal. The things kids hear in rap lyrics or see on WWE is far worse. Besides, Chase definately seems like the type who at least "tried" a joint a few times, and inhaled.

I'm still positive on Whedon. He's unfortunately chosen to plunk Chase in a limited status quo of the past vs. evolve him further, but he gets the tone of the rest right and is writing a decent adventure for the rest of the kids. The biggest issue is by the time he catches his stride, the run is over. He's already at the midway point.

But among a short list of "A-List" writers, he's the one who I'd trust the most with the property. Slott is too busy, I have never seen Brubaker write a teenager for more than an issue, much less a team of 'em, and no one else comes close. Plenty of B-List writer talent, though. But could their namepower carry the book?

McKeever could probably be solid to follow, though, if he was available. And, good lord, would it be awesome if Vaughan returned. I'm not holding my breath, though. He has his Vertigo works for comic stuff and is making TV money now. Cebulski, who is writing THE LONERS and editted the first volume, could pull it off. So could Jeff Parker.

Agreed, I don't mind having Chase experimental, or in use of the drugs, as it's fairly likely.

However, I wish McKeever could write Marvel... :( *Is a sad Frenchborn.*

Right. :(

I editted in choices of Cebulski or Jeff Parker (AGENTS OF ATLAS, MARVEL ADVENTURES, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS).

Cebulski is a no brainer really. Especially since it's doubtful Loners will get an ongoing or even another mini. And Jeff Parker just needs to be given a nice big book.

I never ranted about that, and I liked his dark turn. He'd spent a while as "the jokey jock" with a slight edge to him and BKV had that fully come out with Gert's death. While he didn't have to become Darth Chase, I still would have liked to see Chase, well, NOT simply become a clone of Xander. Still, the fact that I can still enjoy Whedon's arc despite disappointment in how he handles my favorite team member must say something.

The reality is that most kids "experiment" with drugs, alcohol, and/or sex at ages that most of us adults would balk at. Especially in CA, and especially kids like Chase, who have seen the "dark side" of the tracks. So, it fit.

Cebulski is SUCH a no-brainer that I can almost guarentee it won't happen. To repeat myself, one of my golden beliefs is that things that simply make the most sense are usually the things that never happen, because humans like to overcomplicate things. As for Jeff Parker, I agree he needs to be on a bigger book, pronto. I've enjoyed all of his work that I've read so far and he's old-school without being TOO hammy.

^ I dont know, Vaughn was amazing, but I wanna give Joss at least a few more issues.

Vaughn did a better job though. Joss kind of feels like he took three steps back and typecasted Chase.

If his next issues are still about this time-traveling 100 years into the past thing, I'm not interested. I'm still gonna read them of course because Whedon will be gone soon enough, but I'm definitely not a fan of this story.

I think Chase is fine, myself. At first it bugged me because it seemed like such a sudden character change, but, as I understand it, Whedon's story takes place an unspecified amount of time after the Runaways faced off with Iron Man at the end of Vaughan's last arc, so for all we know, Chase has had some time to put things in perspective and start moving on. Whedon gave us a reference to his enduring grief over Gert's death with how cold and angry Chase got over the hologram, so it's still part of the character. He's just managed to compartmentalize it and move on like, oh, nearly everyone who's not in therapy learns to when dealing with loss in the real world.

Whatever happened to that big Golden Age revival book we saw that one promo pic for? Parker would kick at least eleven kinds of ass on something like that, if Agents of Atlas is any indication. He could very well give Marvel a JSA-like success story.

You know why Vaughn is better? Cause he created them. :o

Jeez, peeps give another writer a chance with the characters.

I think we've all given Whedon a chance. I just think his arc is incredibly boring and will most likely be forgettable.

Actually, the last issue turned it around for me. I'm pretty interested to see where Whedon goes now. Of course, that's tempered by the fact that he's got, what, 2 or 3 issues left? Short runs suck.

I don't mind Chase "moving on", it simply looks like a return to status quo. It is as if all the efficiency he showed last arc has gone down the tiolet so he could be Jock Comic Relief again. And it came ON THE HEELS of the escape from Iron Man, which was left to our collective imagination. Besides, know thy writer; Whedon saw Chase as Xander, and so that is who he is. Some details may be different but at the core, that is who he is writing him as. Goofy guy good for jokes and abolsutely nothing else. The definition of hanger on. Victor's even replaced him at piloting the Leapfrog now. The only thing keeping it somewhat barable is that at least Whedon is actually funny. And he writes everyone else well.

Don't get me wrong; Chase being a Jokey Jock is what got him appeal in the first place, the normal guy among metahumans. But BKV's last arc seemed to show his potential evolving, and this seems like a step back. Like if after Nova beat Annihilus and saved the universe, decided to go back to the New Warriors and play second fiddle to Night-Thrasher again.

And I agree, Jeff Parker would be a goldmine on some Marvel's version of JSA book. Heck I thought AGENTS OF ATLAS sort of came close. It's the sales that didn't help him. At the very least, Marvel's given him other work to do, even if it is lower key, probably to test waters. The closest thing Marvel has to a JSA before AOA were The Invaders, and that ship crashed and burned.

Indeed they do, as I have said repeatedly.

I can't believe that you kind of compared rap lyrics to the WWE, haha. WWE has never referenced marijuana. The only time, I believe, that the WWE referenced marijuana is when Rob Van Dam was playing a character that SEEMED to be high on pot.

Other than that...the stuff that WWE does is generally a tongue in cheek representation. I can't believe that you think some of the storylines that the WWE would be bad enough to influence a teenager to talk about weed, haha. THAT'S funny.

Admittedly, my comparison was vague. I meant WWE offers "worse" in the way of violence, sexual exploitation, and immaturity, than a comic book that alluded to weed usage.

There are plenty of wacky people out there. Kirkman's INVINCIBLE just got a letter from a guy who LITERALLY believed the book would sell better if he "stopped taking the lord's name in vain" in dialogue. Now THAT is a letter-writer who just doesn't get it.

I lol'd at Kirkman's response.

Whedon's run has seemed like fanfiction so far. Good fanfiction but fanfiction none the less.

He's reverted some characters development (Chase), revisited old story lines (Nico/Karolina), introduced his own love interests (forgeting Nico/Victor for that new red head) and used a cliche story ('come on gang we gotta find the four amulets if we wanna get back to the future!').

I miss the days of Vaughn. Not only did every issue ship on time but every issue was a must read with NO filler. Reading the first 3 volumes of Runaways in hardback recently really made me appreciate just how far he took these characters and developed them.

Plus I'm still pissed Whedon has seemingly dropped the Nico/Victor and return of Alex storylines.:o

I wouldn't say he forgot about Nico/Victor considering he hints at their relationship in every single issue.

I hope he forgets about Nico/Victor and that redhead goes back to the future with them. She seems much better for Vic than Nico. Plus, Nico's gotta continue her streak of helping other Runaways cheat on their significant others--next up is Karolina.

I don't wanna post a long winded review, but this weekend, I got caught up on Runaways (#5-27). I will say that Alphona's artwork progressed as much that two year span as any artist I've seen, and that he became downright great.

I'll also say that Joss Whedon is impressing me at all. And while Mike Ryan's pencils are good, they're not a fit for this book either. One of the strengths of Alphona's work was his ability to portray kids. Ryan's stuff just looks like mini adults. Not to mention Alphona gave the kids a pretty cool fashion sense that Ryan seems to have pitched out the window.

Nico and Vic was clearly shown in the last issue and there was nothing ever stated that Alex would ever come back.

Though, the Alex cameo before Vaughn left the series rocked my freaking socks.

Then again, I could be biased. He is my favourite Runaway character, even if he was the mole.
